most rwkw with stock turbo & cooler???

How fast is your stock turbo & cooler car? That's what I'm interested in.

yeh but times can vary too much, temp, track conditions, launch, engine bay temp, traction, air density, gear changes, wot revs u shift at and on and on and on

power is power, from power u can work towards a time, but with a time it doesnt tell u anythin about your power...

all well and good if u only car wot time u run....but i like to know both as im sure most people would

I don't even care if its a bloody 1/4mile,your favorite circuit race track or private road.

Thats what I mean by how fast your car is.

Time's, if you standardise the driver. Tell you whether the car owners a 'wally' for seting up the car wrong (for the thing he actually wanted to do) and whether he is full of bulldust about his power claim.

Three ply, extra soft dyno sheets, go hand in hand with no mph to back it up.

High powered/fast cars always have a corresponding mph (unless the driver didn't use all the gears or blew up something halfway down etc.) This is inspite of wheel spin out of the blocks.

For instance, I doubt whether I have even 180rwkw and I have a full 3mph more terminal than you, and run a 13.7 with 2.5 60fts (and lots of wheel spin). I'm saying I don't have 180rwkw - you say you do and can't 'show me the money'. Even on a rolling start I'd hand you your ass.

Now I'm not trying to dispute the time spent at your local dyno was a waste, you got a good tune out of it and I'm sure and that 180rwkw figure probably indicates a good tuning improvement.

there is more to going quick than power as you have said, so why lose focus on the real purpose of the car for the sake of being a 'dyno queen'.

I think a good guide would be that for every $1 you put into 'go-fast' bits put $0.50 into better tyres, suspension, setup etc.

No point having 250rwkw if you cant put it all to the ground until you have reached 50% way down the 1/4 track.

i got my car alsmos as is, with resonable tyres i would no doubt hand u your ass rev...i think u r gettin ova the top a bit, i mean after all, ya cars almost stock, go to the drags and c some real modded cars and youl realise that both our cars r slooowww, and from wot ive seen in your other threads, uve spent a lot more time, money and effort than me...my car can run mid 13s no prbs..but who cares

the gtr im gettin will devour all :D

When you assemble 10-15 or more cars together for a dyno day its not just about a one-off number - you have COMPARISON amongst other things by which to measure up your car [and its state of tune / mods] to the next guy's [state of tune / mods]. Benchmarking is also important to gauge any future mods...

Some people may never take their pride and joy down to the track and there is nothing wrong with that - nobody has anything to prove. You do what you are interested in - the same as TUFR33 may be interested in reaching one of his own goals...?

I will run mine one day [legal-drags] but for now I am happy with the performance / handling / ride quality etc...

Spent less than $2,000 so far. A snick over $1k to get a 13.4 on little 205's (13.5's all day baby).The next outing will have me in 12's (still a slow car tho').

Well it looks like you do have problems running a mid 13 in your car, you haven't yet. Talk is cheap beat my time and shut me up :P

Dyno is a tuning device, dyno days are fun sure but if the point is trying to make sense of other peoples mods then you might want to make a few other comparisons before heading off down the dyno sheep path.

Dyno's don't tell you how long it takes to accellerate, they can't emulate the areodynamic drag on a vehicle or airflow into cooling components.

There is nothing wrong with never taking the car to any kind of motorsport.If it aint your bag say so and no one will get confused

INASNT, would you let someone else take your car down the 1/4?

Considering the mods to rev's car, and on stock tires IMHO you must be a good driver to be getting those times?

TUFR33 - Met Blue GTST's car, according to Lumpy (the tuner at C-Red, and quite respected) "goes quite hard" that was in the trim that he (Met Blue GTST) stated, approx 250rwhp. Not too many skylines put down those sort of figures with stock turbo and coola, but it gives you an idea of what is possible.

But, seriously, with anything above 10psi boost with stock turbo and coola, you are taking chances with the turbo.

Did you actually have a power figure in mind or are you just wondering what is possible?

Well, I think you are right.

But alot of it is probably based on the fact that Rev is not new to the game. Having valuable experience means he can get a combo of mods right for maximum gains, so maximum bang for buck. This combined with someone that quite obviously knows how to drive - ie consistant times, and perhaps the real potential of the GTST is being shown.

I am under the impression that experience, above and beyond knowledge, is what makes a real difference in the real world.

Sort of gives you something to aim for when someone else is getting better times with similar or less mods - ask yourself 'what am I doing wrong' and try to improve.

It seems to me that alot of people just bolt on more bits in an attempt to improve times, when the real handicap is the driver. I had a mate in the west who likes taking cars down the strip. When he doesnt get a time that he believes his car is capable of, he looks at how to maximise the performane he has without bolting more on, then when he is happy he adds more and moves the bar up a notch - isnt this what it is all about?

Jeez, starting to waffle a bit now.

    • A few things that seem a bit off here. - why is there 2 BOV’s?  - the turbo smart BOV on the compressor housing, is it turned up ALL the way? I have seen this become an issue on old man Pete’s car. It would push open and recirc, turbo speed would rise and the boost pressure would do weird things. - stock head? Does that include springs? - tried a different MAC valve? Is it plumbed correctly?
    • Photo of manifold showing gate location? I mean, it's 6Boost, so we probably shouldn't be worrying, but always wroth knowing what the layout is. Plumbed back to atmosphere? Or into the dump?
    • Yes correct. Also, I'd avoid applying it to soft paint (however I doubt you'll ever have to deal with it in practice). So any paint that hasn't fully hardened, could be a 1k paint that never fully hardened or it could be a 2k paint that was laid down thick and hasn't yet fully hardened. 
    • Bit of an update to this one. Having some issues on the dyno that held us back (boost spiking) and I want to pass some info over you guys and see what you think is wrong with my setup. The current readout on this dyno is 462rwkw on a low reading dyno so keep in mind it is a real world 500rwkw setup on a hub dyno. Don't read into the power figure too much as a sign of the issue. The short and curly of it is: 2.8 Litre Racepace build RB25 NEO N/A Head with VCT (internally standard however ) Borgwarner EFR 8474  Turbosmart 50mm Straight Gate + Mac valve 6Boost Manifold 4" dump to full 4" exhaust (nil restrictions) Wastegate plumbed back in and all angles in the exhaust system are acceptable and not too sharp. GFB SV52 BOV in cooler piping  Turbosmart BOV in EFR Housing   The issue we are having is it comes onto full boost for example at 4000rpm and spikes to 24/25psi, before dropping down to 17psi before slowly rising back up to the target boost of 23psi. It was extremely uncontrollable and the tuner actually had to ramp in boost progrssively with each 1000rpm on each boost setting we selected to try and reduce the amount of spiking. Sometimes we would see a drop of 10psi from the peak at the beginning of the run, to the low, until it took the next 500-1000rpm to stabilise back up to the target boost. The tuner is pretty confident that the straight gate is just a poorly designed product and leaks too much boost upon cracking the gate open and theres no way to fix it other than going to a poppet valve. He's also confient theres no ignition breakdown or floating valves. The fueling is extremely stable as well. Turbo speed is somewhere around the 109,000rpm area. The spanner in the works for me is that prior to this Borgwarner and StraightGate, the car was tuned on -5 twins at a diferent tuner, and he also had issues controlling the boost with it spiking around the same rpm range, so to me this sounds like the same issue and it can't be anything on the turbo side as this was all changed and I think the behaviour is extremely similar, if not the same. We also removed the mac valve and did a run on wastegate pressure and it still spiked and had the same behaviour. My thoughts on possibilities are: Boost Leak VCT Cam Gear isn't reliably activating consistently - (On this however, we did a run with the VCT disabled and the boost still spiked) Turbosmart BOV is not handling the boost? However this seems unlikely to not be able to handle 20psi. I have a couple of logs that I can't make sense of if anybody knows how to read them and can obtain further logs of other parameters if they are not enough, happy to pay for anyones time. The dyno readout with the power figure is the most recent last week. The other picture is from two weeks prior to that where we couldn't break 400kw (we removed the cat), however the issue of the boost control persisted. @Lithium @Piggaz @burn4005 @GTSBoy @discopotato03 I've tagged those that were quite active in recent pages here, no disrespect to those that know turbos well but I missed tagging.
