Hi all, i tried searching but cant really find a thread on this one...im just wondering if a GTR32 runs wheels with offsets that are not +22 ot thereabouts, how does it handle on the track?

And also with different wheel widths on fronts n rears, how much would it compromise handling? Assuming having an example of 17x8 on fronts n 17x9 on rears and all using 235/45/17 semi-comp rubber, both with offset ranging from +28 to +35, how much will this affect the handling? Ive been trying to source cheap rims for track use on my GTR32 and the wheels for the GTRs are all pretty pricey, i dont need a good looking set, cuz i wont use them on the streets, but not luck~its always the rims with the +30 odd offsets! And just another point, i guess it wouldnt matter if we used those mismatched size wheels for drifting on a GTR32? Will they rub agst anything on full lock etc?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

I can answer part of your question. My GTR has 17*8 and 17*9" wheels. I've done a track day and a road rally on them and the handling was very good. I have 235/45 on the front and 245/45 on the rear because the 9" wheel wasn't within the recommended wheel widths for Federal 235/45 tyre - other tyres makes may fall in suitable range in the same size. Can't remember the offsets of my wheels, but i could check if you want?

I used to have semi-slicks on the standard 32 GTR wheels 16*8" +30? (if my memory is right) and handling was very good. I really couldn't feel any change in the car's balance going from the road tyres on the 17's and the semis on the very different offset wheels.

I wouldn't be at all concerned about running 8s and 9's on the track if you find a reasonably priced set.

The problem is GTR's tend to understeer, sometimes on corner entry, often at mid corner and (depending on power levels) occasionally on corner exit. So running a smaller width tyre (diameter must be the same) on the front is not a good idea. So you really need to look to running the same size (width and diameter) tyre front and rear. But running a narrower rim and hence a baggier tyre on the front, is equally not a good idea.

When the budget is tight, we use cheap wheels on the race cars, they get banged around a lot and you really need 10 wheels in the kit. So we use Speedy Wheels, commonly the Hollow Type R in 17 X 8. They are not particularly light, their look is not to everyone’s taste, but they are cheap. We can buy a set of 4 for less than what one R33GTR wheel costs. Have a chat to your local Speedy retailer, they often have specials.

 cheers :P

Icic...well what about our attessa systems? Will 4wd be affected with different diameter rims or tyres on front and rear? And also with different rolling diameters, how much does it affect our handling on the GTR? I personally am not looking for a fancy wheel fer the track, just need it to be structually sound. With regards to offset, yeah im just wondering cuz if with a higher + offset like +35 compared to +22, our wheels sit narrower on both sides, and would that narrowing provide a lesser "base" compared to the standard GTR offset wheels? Like the idea of a force acting on a base area that is holding it, a larger base area would allow it to take more force n weight n thus perhaps higher cornering speeds? Yeah harry it would be cool to have an idea of yer offset on the wheels~but if its too troublesome dont go thru it yeah...dont wish to trouble anyone too much here~ :(

ok, i dont think you are talking about different diamter wheels? (ie, 17inch vs 18 inch) I think you are talking about different widths. Running different diameter wheels is a big no no. different width is ok, providing you calculate the aspect ratio of the tyre properly so your rolling diameter is the same. different rolling diameter front to rear will cause you problems. also, as sydneykid mentioned it's desirable to have nice wide tyres up front (and the guards certainly accomodate it). Yes running a wheel of say +32 vs a wheel of +20 will give you a reduction in track of 10mm per side, that is a total reduction of 20mm of track. This is not a good thing. more track is what you are after, not less.

personally for a set of track rims I'd suggest something like a set of standard R33 GTR rims. They are 17X9 +30. They are forged and fairly light. they have nice open spoke design which is good for airflow from a brake perspective, and easy to clean. Something in 17X9 +20 would be even better. For me that's a nice size for some track work. and comfortable fit a 235, 245 or 255 tyre.

The ATTESSA doesn't like different diameters (width is irrelevant). So it doesn't matter about the effect on handling, it's a no no from an ATTESSA point of view.

A wider track is always an advantage, but it's not a big deal. We swap between +30 and +35 with 8" rims and it makes zero difference to the lap times. The 10 mm difference in track is insignificant.

Keep in mind the relationship between rim width and offset ie; an 8” rim with +22 offset puts the outside of the rim in the same place as a +35mm offset on a 9” rim. That means the car’s track is the same, which is what is important.

:( cheers :teehee:

    • I dunno about that as a blanket statement. Pitwork is Nissan's "Nissan genuine" thing, and for stuff like timing belts, I have found them to be excellent. Of course, for things like oil filters, you always use proper trusted brands anyway, not whatever the OEM has taken to using.
    • Ahhhh... If you were putting 12V to the led in there, that's likely made it very unhappy. Chances are how you put power, was 12V across an LED that's meant to only have about 20mA through it at peak, and a forward voltage of about 1.8 to 2.4 volts. That circuit is likely only a 3V3 circuit, and will have a resistor in series with the led too. That's my guesstimate on that light, without having touched one.
    • Another vote for installing them and see how you go.  I mean, you already own them, why would you not fit them?
    • I have had too many of those over the years, my cars have a toolkit or at minimum a cheapy multi tool thing because its too easy to be snookered by some stupid plastic clip that stops you checking the battery terminal isn't loose.
    • Basically, if there is a part# on the nissan catalogue, it is a genuine part. There is a thing called "new old stock" which is stuff made years ago but never sold (or landfilled), but it is super hit and miss what you can buy. Other than some expensive Nismo stuff there is nothing new being made that suits these cars. The only time to be a little careful is (mostly in the US I think, but maybe Japan too), Nissan started rebranding some cheap crap maintenance parts like oil filters as "Pitworks"; stay away from them, if you are buying cheap just buy whatever the local car parts shop carries The three part numbers have an explanation on Amayama: 0V005 is auto, base style 0V015 is manual 0V505 is auto, hectic momo branded ones, maximum F&F points there!
