non-turbo stageas are not eligible for importation under RAWS, power to weight is too low. have to go turbo, or get an outback as above

Id love a turbo.

But i cant have any turbo car under the new homo laws that are comming in, I get my p's in august 2007 so

Yes, only RB20DE

Would be slow as PISS, I even consider the stock RB25DET a tad slow :P

Sucks about the no turbo thing mate, stageas are GREAT first cars even in turbo form, Id definatly buy my son one for his first car, but by the time my son is 18 it will be ~2030

six year will bring me up to 25, which is about the time id want to have kids anyway.

meh, will see, cant really plan that stuff can we :)

on another note, id have children now at 19, but just all the neglect and lack of TRUE financial support (aka, car should eat the cash :D) is holding me off.

Hey OB,

Your only 16 now and thinking of having 174kw under your ass in your first ride.

How are you going to prepare yourself for sudden death?

I think he's right. Not saying everyone's like this but I remember how I was when I first learnt to drive. scary.

I think 2-3 years regular driving should give enough experience to handle any car reasonably well after that -but yeah its about knowing your limitations/experience (that is "knowing", not imagining).

Still, on the topic, a n/a skyline or other nissan import still makes a great first car. Not the quickest thing on the road but the fast acceleration is the only thing you're missing out on. You still get the looks and handling.

How much are you allowed to modify an n/a car with these new laws? I'm in SA so dont really know how it all works...

Maybe these laws are a good idea but I'd personally rather they spent the $$ on better driver training and education than just outright banning of turbo cars etc. I mean most of the time when an accident is speed related, just about any car could've reached the speed in question without too much trouble. Even n/a cars can still easily manage 150km/h on the freeway so really I think its a step in the wrong direction. Make it harder for people to get what they want and they will try harder to get it.

rant over.

yeah im 19 the S2 stagea is my third car after a RWD corolla and an XE falcon (big step up). Aren't there 25X model stagea's that are non turbo or something other than RB20E he could look at, would these be AWD?

There are but not in Australia. They dont meet SEVS requirements for power/weight ratio or something like that. Would be painfully slow anyways.

as steve said above we can only get AWD and RWD turbo model Stags in Australia as the non turbo models are slow as paint drying so dont meet the minimum power to weight ratio which i think is something along the lines of 121kw/tonne

The minimum would have to be much lower than that.

At 173kw (is that correct?) a S1 turbo stag has ~104 kw/tonne

And for reference a S2 (206kw) has ~124 kw/tonne.

And you can import n/a skylines etc. so the minimum must be a bit lower.

Yep I think it is 100kw/tonne or something like that. I think that there are other criteria that can be met that makes a car eligible???

    • Well, this is probably where a wiring diagram and a multimeter come into play.
    • I can say to anyone thats doing this; having done a number of R clusters; just be careful if its an unknown cluster.  It takes a bit of force to pull up; but if it feels excessive then its probably stuck. I've had this and pulled the entire hair spring out; and I can tell you; its not easy getting the correct spring replacement with the correct inner diameter and winding. In my case someone had used some sort of adhesive to stick it to the spindle and it pulled the whole spindle out; which the force seperated the hairspring from the spindal and caused it to deform.  You may have to clean it (IPA); or in my case if i'd known i should have used some sort of solvent on it.  Also check out Cruizin Central on eBay. He does all sorts of dials; and you can email him with any custom designs you want. So if you want like certain logos etc...he'll send you a mock of what it will look like then you accept the order and he'll take care of the rest. Fantastic dials and he can do basically any design you want.
    • Have you confirmed its the actual axles? Also the wheel bearings that mount on the hubs to hold the axles wear out. I replaced mine as they got play in them. It sorted my play issue.
    • Ive converted a few clusters for the R33 with 320km/h dials. On the back there are some pads which can be bridged or unbridged (using solder or wick braid) to calibrate it. There is one bridge which is for MPH <> KPH; and there are combinations of bridges to offset it. There is probably a diagram  For example; this is my conversion for a 180km/h dial to a 320km/h dial (I put custom GT-R dials on it with the GTS25t layout) If you have J2 soldered (assuming the S clusters have a similar config to the R clusters); you may need to remove that solder
    • Back on topic 😉, these are some of the notable pages from the booklets that are supplied with each weekly parts update. I never knew the BNR32 test mule car had an S13 Silvia front end... *Edit: On closer inspection the test car still had the R32 body, but only the front end had Silvia panels etc.
