Hi guys,

I was just curious to how can you hook up subs onto a computer?

Is it possible? I imagine you would still need an amp, I wonder if you can use the one in the car?

The reason is I have old Fusion amp and 2 x 12" subs here lying around at the moment.

Just curious if its possible... or maybe atleast hook it up to dvd player or something.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Thanks, you wouldn't happen to have a link to the amp at jaycar would you? Sorry don't really understand how these things work... thats why I got a professional to install mine in my car.

Can't I use the fusion amp?

Mind you I don't really want to burn or blow anything in the end.

Also I just want to avoid spending more money.

Just thought if it was possible to use them

Best to use a dedicated 240v home amplifier, here is a link.

http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?I...=&SUBCATID=

Please be aware that that your subwoofer is 4ohm, so you could be generating quite a bit of heat from this amp (check that it's 4ohm stable).

If you wanted to use your fusion amplifier, then you'll need a 12volt convertor.

You're better off using a set of purpose built home computer speakers like Logitechs. I have a set of Yamaha 350wrms computer speakers, they cost around $300 at the time of purchase and they pump nearly as hard as my single 12 in the car at the moment.

You would need a pretty substantial power supply (read - expensive) to power your fusion amp, your best bet if you want to use them with your puter' is buying one of the jaycar amps like Howie found and getting a 3.5 mm splitter and a 3.5 to rca lead - they can help you out with these at Jaycar (cant tell I used to work at Jaycar eh?)

a 40 amp power supply should do the trick and they are available from car audio distributors for anywhere between 450 and 2000 dollars.

One thing to think about to is the level the amp will see. Your computer from a set of rca style outputs will only have a weak signal output, probably less than 1 volt.

A car audio amp is designed to see between 2 and 8 volts generally.

so you will need to run a line driver, car eq etc to boost up the signal before it goes into the amp, otherwise no volume.

Or...

Go to Jaycar, buy the piece of crap amp, wire your 2 subs at 8 ohm so the amp does not shut down and you have bass.

This is the easist most cost effective way to do it.

if you are going to use it at home then buy a sub-amp for home (240V)

this will eliminate the 12-13.8VDC power supply.

only buy sub-amp as it would have a built in low pass filter.

do not buy a home theatre or a standard stereo amp as it will be a waste of time.

the line level coming from your PC will be in the form of 3.5mm stereo socket (earphone type) is perfectly fine at 1 Vp-p (standard). just buy a converter lead to go to 2 RCAs and you will be fine.

    • Price seems pretty good to me. Also seems a hell of a lot cheaper then buying another vehicle that only ever gets used for towing.  I'm a long way from you mate, I'm a couple of hours out of Brizzy.

    • The sodium acetate, mixed with citric acid, doesn't actually buffer each other. Interestingly though, if you used Sodium Acetate, and acetic acid, THAT becomes a buffer solution. Additionally, a weak acid that can attack a metal, is still a weak acid that can attack a metal. If you don't neutralise it, and wash it off, it's going to be able to keep attacking. It works the same way when battery acid dries, get that stuff somewhere, and then it gets wet, and off it goes again breaking things down. There's a reason why people prefer a weak acid, and it's because they want TIME to be able to be on their side. IE, DIY guys are happy to leave some mild steel in vinegar for 24 hours to get mill scale off. However, if you want to do it chemically in industry, you grab the muriatic acid. If you want to do it quicker at home, go for the acetic acid if you don't want muriatic around. At the end of the day, look at the above thumbnail, as it proves what I said in the earlier post, you can clean that fuel tank up all you want with the solution, but the rust that has now been removed was once the metal of the fuel tank. So how thin in spots is your fuel tank getting? If the magazine on the left, is the actual same magazine as on the right, you'll notice it even introduces more holes... Well, rust removal in general actually does that. The fuel tank isn't very thick. So, I'll state again, look to replace the tank, replace the fuel hanger, and pump, work out how the rust and shit is making it past the fuel filter, and getting into the injectors. That is the real problem. If the fuel filter were doing its job, the injectors wouldn't be blocked.
    • Despite having minimal clothing because of the hot weather right now, I did have rubber gloves and safety glasses on just in-case for most of the time. Yes, I was scrubbing with my gloves on before, but brushing with a brush removes the remaining rust. To neutralize, I was thinking distilled water and baking soda, or do you think that would be overkill?
