In the last few days Ive noticed a clicking noise coming from my steering wheel everytime I turn the wheel. It is only noticable when turning it a fair bit like when parking etc, not when taking bends in the road.

It seems like it will make a clicking noise once - maybe once per full turn of the wheel?

When I go over a hard bump in the road you can hear it then too.

Sounds like something is loose. Maybe the mechanism that turns off the indicator after turning?

Ive taken off the steering column but cant see anything there where the noise is coming from.

It seems like its in the steering wheel itself.

Im just a bit worried about taking it appart - worried about the airbag going off in my face.

Has this happened to anyone before. Any ideas?

car is a 95 GTSt if it makes any difference

If your unsure on howto remove and check a steering wheel with an airbag attatched I suggest you take it to a god mechanic.

If an airbag accidentaly goes off when you playing around it can cause death.

I have seen this a TAFE videos (The really corny ones!)

Cheers

Josh

Is it a click or a light knocking sound? I had the same thing if it also happens over bumps. It is the metal plate that is in the wheel. It is vulcanized to a backing plate but the rubber gets old and breaks allowing the plate to flop around.I`m sure you could find someone to revulcanize it or maybe even glue it but I wasn`t sure if it had something to do with the air bag so I just bought a new one from just jap.$90:00.

yeah I guess it is more of a light knocking sound

thanks for that

I take it that you've got an airbag?

I own a S1 that doesn't have an airbag. I had a similar problem.

The plastic pressure plate that pushed down onto the horn contacts was the problem for me. The plastic went brittle and broke into bits and pieces and were rattling around inside the steering wheel whenever it was turned.

Had to pull the steering wheel cover off and remove what was left of the pressure plate. Although this meant that the horn no longer worked. I just had to find something to replace the pressure plate and hey presto, workin horn again

Don't know how you'd go about if you've got an airbag though.

You might have the same prob.

    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
