Imports Through Dickson

Recommended Posts

Guest 180Chick

Hey guys and girls!!

Just wandering if any of you have had any experience with taking 'freshly' imported cars through Dickson after they have been Australian complied.

Ie what is needed to be done, what are the rules that Dickson go by for imports (what are you allowed/not allowed to have on the car)....

Any input at all would be heaps appreciated!

Thanks!!!

Jo

if it's freshly imported i can't imagine there being a problem with it, although compliance and roadworthiness can be different. usually only stock cars are allowed to be complied which would mean a freshly stock car would have a very good chance

Is it a skyline or a 180 ???

My car was a fresh import. Things you will need from memory (this was over 2 years ago)

Compliance plate in the engine bay

Compliance papers

Owners manual (if it doesnt say the weight of the car get your car weighed at a weigh station i had to go get this done)

Make sure the wheel/tyre sizes eg 225/16/55 match up the placecard in the door sill.

Mine was stock when i first got it so i didnt have any problems getting through.

good luck

Sorry to be annoying with Dickson questions. I have been over by way of registration and defect for both my 180s but just wanted to know what needs to be done for imported cars and people's experience

It will get its plate in Sydney after going through Customs, the papers 'should' come over with the car and will make sure they do. It will be stock and if not, I will be able to fix it before it goes over.

Thanks for your help and input :)

Is the car being complianced or is it a 15 year old import?

If its being complianced, just take those papers with you and you should be sweet. If its a 15 year old import, it needs some specific work done (fuel neck, child restraints etc) done and an engineer to sign off on the work. You then need to take the engineering certificate with you to Dickson.

Any crazy jap window tint? Myne was 4% visibility..........Had to get that taken off. Heard of quite a few ppl having to fix parking lights etc, make sure every ligth works. make sure seat belt stoppers are working. The guys picked me off for having a very small hole in the muffler.

Thanks guys!!!

The car is being complianced as it is younger than 15 years. I have got the car so it applies by the RAWS and SEVS rules.

On our ACT Goverment site it says you can take a car to any certified workshop in ACT UNLESS it is an import in which case it MUST go over Dickson. So does that mean it will just be a normal inspection like any other car, I just need to make sure I have my Jap papers and the compliance plate from Sydney is on?

There is no tinting on the window, well that I can see anyway. I will make sure to check the lights.

So basically if I just make sure the car is roadworthy like I would taking any of my other cars over, it should be the same?

Thanks for all your help guys!! It means heaps and I really appreciate it! Just means I have a better idea what to do once I get over all this stuff with Customs.

I had the worst experiance with my R taking it over dickson, they just didnt want to pass me!!

First off i had all the import papers as well as compliance papers and it was registered in NSW for me but i needed to put it over dickson anyway.

First i had the police check which came back fine, then they checked it and failed me on my upper tie rod end on the passanger side i think it was. but everything else passed.

then i got called up and was asked to come down, i did and there were some detectives there that threatened to take my car away because it was apparenly stollen!!! WTF!!!

I found out later that the place in sydney that engineered the car where under investigation but i dont know how they thought it was stollen i had the import papers with the same engine number and everything as it was imported into the country with.

then a guy from dickson said to go and get it re engineered and then come get it registered so another 400 bucks down the drain!!! i put it in to have the tie rod fixed. took it over the pits again and they said the tie rod was still no good so i took it back to get fixed my machanics said there was nothing wrong with it, so i got all new ones from nissan and had them installed, took it over the pits again and they still said the tie rod end was no good ITS f**kING BRAND NEW!!!!!! i nearly lost the plot.... i pointed out that everything under there had been replaced, then they said my exuast was too loud WHAT!!!! they had passed it all the other times. so they marked everything down as being fine except the exaust. i was fed up and lucky i can just take the muffler off i did that and made up a muffler smaller than a mazda 121 HAHA it didnt make a noise.... well it barley ran but it was quiet. funny as 3 1/2" goinging into 1/4" at the tip.

took it over the pits again and the guy looked at the sheet saw he oly needed to test the sound i drove the car where he wanted it he stood there for a bit then came around to my window and said "you got to be joking how long is that muffler going to stay on ther" i just said it was no concern to him.

he was so angry but tested it anyway hehe reved it to 3 grand and it would have been luck to even register on the machine. he marked it off and through the paper at me.... i just dont know what there problem was they just didnt want to pass me.

i hope i never have to go over again after that experiance

hope it all goes well tho for ya

Yea they are absolutely the most unreasonable people i have ever dealt with in my life. I felt like taking a bomb in there at one stage and being a martyr for all the people with modified cars ! They feel asthough the have power over us being the final word on wether our cars are "roadwothy" i have seen some real farken shirtboxes on ACT road but do any of those cars ever go to dickson i sure wire holding the exhaust manifold on counts as a MOD !

DICKSON REGO WANKERS FARK OFF AND DIE

Nugget, that was scary! My car has been booked for an inspection this Monday as I need to transfer the NSW Rego to ACT rego. Hope that does not happen to me!

it shouldnt, my experiance is prolly the worst of the worst. i dont understand why i was never rude or anything, they just had it in for me for some reason, i didnt even have that much trouble with my mx6 which had sooo much work done to it, and it wasnt engineered!!!

have seen some real farken shirtboxes on ACT road but do any of those cars ever go to dickson i sure wire holding the exhaust manifold on counts as a MOD !

Dob them in if you see them, they can do it to us if they think our cars are too loud/low.

DICKSON REGO WANKERS FARK OFF AND DIE

i concur with the above statement.

I'm honestly not even sure what they are trying to do. The amount of grief i had over the fact that my engineer wrote "remote boost controller" on my certificate, was stupid.

How is a remote boost controller going to endanger my life or the general road populus (vs say a bleed valve or just having it at a higher level anyway)?

I'm all for having unsafe cars off the road, and ones that are overly unnecessarily polluting our environment - but the level of analism they go to is retarded.

f**k Dickson and f**k the old bastard who has some long-withstanding vendetta against engineers.

I asked repeatedly why certain things were a problem, one of them proceded to tell me (regarding the boost controller) i could dialup 4 or 5, when they start at 1, making more horsepower - which has what to do with anything? Nevermind the fact that my turbo wouldn't flow it, so its irrelevant anyway.

enough said, mate had such problems with them..had to go back 3 times before they were happy! QLD kicks ass they'll do anything for a good guy who just happens to have a slab of australias finest on him

I am bit scared now Nugget lol. I was going to get it imported and regoed straight here but have now changed it to get complied and regoed in NSW then all I have to do is bring it over Dickson by way of state transfer on the rego but sounds like that is going to be such a hassle too :)

Would you mind please sending me a PM on the company that did your NSW work just so that you don't see a post up here in a month or so saying a story like yours?

    • For DBA, check out their guide table here. https://dba.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Direct_Replacement-Guide-2021.2.pdf   Additionally they have some other guides and info on how to make sure you choose the right pad.
    • Sorry, just assumed that talk of coloured pads meant EBC red/green/yellow/shit stuff. I don't know the DBA pads, but it's a reasonable bet that they will be OK. DBA make good stuff generally. Those 4000 series rotors I linked to are very good. I may well replace the RDA rotors I have with those when required.
    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
