radar detectors - whats good?

Recommended Posts

Well i got a Beltronics Vector LR Remote Beltronics... Cost me $800.00 from strathfield (housemate works there so i got a good price) and it works really well... It usually picks them up about 300 metres away depending on factors like cars in front, if its on a hill, bends in road, stuff like that... So far i haven't got a ticket in the Skyline :innocent: Touch wood... :bonk:

Woody.

The multinova's work on the Ka frequency and the radars on the side of the cop cars use the K frequency... I've found that as soon as i hear the Ka frequency go off i instantly jump on the brakes and look for the multinova... The K frequency is used quite often around perth in the automatic sliding door sensors and some alarms will set it off... So sometimes its hard to find the cop cars with the radars hanging off the side... The detectors usually have the same features, but make sure it has K and Ka bands...

Sorry about the grammer, been at work since 8am and don't finish till 9:30pm so my brain has melted...

i got a whistler which is made by bel. it is very simplistic and is good for hand guns and multinovas, but best for handguns as it always picks them, up i noticed for the 1 year i used it in my gsr that i never saw a multinova on my side of the road LOL

i havent used it for over a year now. I think after the 6points and $350 fine i might start again cos that was a hand held. doh

it was $400 when i bought it, but they are like $330 now

THEY ARE DEFINATELY IN NO WAY AS GOOD AS THE ONE MENTIONED ABOVE AS THEY ARE HARDCORE, this one just helps heaps,

I have a BEL 980, has saved me lots of money and points, I've only had one speeding ticket in over a year ans that was because the cop car was off the my left in a side street and pinged me at such an angle that the detector didn't see him.

Cost me $800 from Audiocom in Freo. I thoroughly recommend this model. Picks up X, K and Ka, has City and Highway modes, even a vioce model where it will tell you the Band that it has picked up in an American accent instead of just a particular noise.

you gotta spend money on these things- I got a Bell 850.

I found the major problem with detectors is falsing- going off when there is no radar around- no alarm is any good if it falses- boy who cried wolf. As expensive as mine is it still falses on K band- therefore I have turned K off (at least thi model has this feature) K is only used on the cruisers so until I go out bush or hit serious freeway time I should be OK.

Warning time varies greatly- from 500m to 10m (impossible to slow down from some distances so the lesson is these things do not give you carte blanche to drive faster) depeding on many different factors.

Isn't K band also used for the handheld radar guns?

I wouldn't be game enough to turn K off in the city, sure you get a few false pings but you get to learn the difference between an automatic door and a real ping, the doors are usually quite weak and you learn where your likely to get these false pings, always in he same places etc.

It's better to be over cautious that risk the ticket IMHO.

EDIT: sorry, just remembered the handheld guns are lasers (which mine also picks up).

And yes you do get some variation in the warning distance due to the surroundings at the time and whether the camera operator has it turned off and waits for you to get close before arming it, not much you can do about that. Also, you get a warning for the laser guns if they are targeting someone infront of you for example but if they are pointing it right at you then the warning is them getting your speed usually :D

i got a cobra radar detector its pretty good but same problem i catch to many interferance but that something that you will have to put up with eg. service station, taxi's i got k, ka, vg, x and a few more gets a bit annoying after a long drive but it has saved me a few times and i found that its a bit cheaper then the rest. I purchased mine when i was overseas and it was really cheap $100us so if you know someone it would be a good idea, ive also noticed them being on ebay brand new type in radar detector.

    • I’m here solo don’t have any hands to help so haven’t hit it with a timing light
    • When you crank your car, and hit it with a timing light, can you see a steady crank timing?
    • Oh, forgot to add, A few months ago I was getting mixture codes and the car was using crap loads of fuel. You could smell the unburned fuel in the exhaust, it was crazy strong. Economy was over 17.5 l/100 and usually around 19. I smoked the engine and found a leaky CCV hose which I replaced and then I replaced my two pre cat O2 sensors, I also replaced the MAF. This fixed my mixture codes and improved my exonomy but I'm still 14 - 15 l/100 when pottering about town so something is still amiss. Throttle response is much better and it has more pep but I'd like to know why it's still so thirsty (and I'm hoping that whatever it is gives me a bit more poke).
    • Car is on factory injectors/z32 maf/ q45 throttle body/ z32 ecu with nistune
    • Hello all, currently finishing up a rb25 swap into my s14. Having issues with starting, car has spark (confirmed by pulling a plug and watching it spark), has fuel(confirmed by checking pulse/voltage at injectors all spark plugs are soaked in fuel). Car cranks over and pops into the exhaust with a heavy fuel smell but no attempt to start or run, I have torn the timing cover off and triple confirmed timing, turned the CAS in multiple spots both directions, attempted to start with coolant temp and maf unplugged, checked my fuel lines and made sure they weren’t backwards, checked voltage at cas/injectors/coilpacks, made sure all the grounds in the harness are connected and added a few grounding straps (1 from chassis to block, 1 from chassis to head, and 1 from chassis to igniter chip) I am getting stumped here. As a last ditch effort I made a full grounding harness tonight that’s going to run from the battery and add an extra ground from the battery onto the coil pack harness/igniter chip/ intake manifold/ Wiring specialties harness ground/ and alternator. I’m hoping maybe the grounding harness will fix it here but posting here to see if anyone has any other ideas on what else I can check. My fuel pressure is unknown right gauge will be here tomorrow.  IMG_3206.mov
