Hi all,

I am seeing if it would be possible for me to build a 2.2 rb20det myself....

I have a good mechanical knowledge but no actual engine building experience...

I am hoping people who have built their own engines might be able to help me figure if this is possible for me to do or if I am 'dreamin mate'.

Could anyone who has built their own engines share any experiences, Also after advice as to where I might learn how...ie books you found useful, videos...websites etc which you thought helped you....

I'm not an expert on the RB20 but have/am building a couple of RB engines. It isnt rocket science.

Grab a good service manual if you can find one, make sure you have some guys with knowledge you can harass when you get stuck or are unsure on anything - and a mate who works as Mechanic or Machinist etc is also very handy when it comes to borrowing that tool/s which you only need once or twice and is way too expensive to buy!!

Hi russ, my suggestions would be to get a copy of the translated R32 engine manual (www.skylinesdownunder.com) and study the RB20 rebuild section. There are a number of specialist tools you will need. otherwise it is all about taking your time, following the instructions and doing it logically and methodically. You will also need access to a machine shop with , honing decking and balancing equipment.

Hi russcb007, I know what you mean, I am enjoying building up an RB30/RB26 currently, normally the team engine builder does this sort of stuff. But since it's my personal engine, I thought I would do it all myself, very rewarding.

I was going to write another post, something about sticking to a budget, costs getting out of hand, poor driveability and stuff like that. But it's probably just a waste of time.

Hi Russ, the airflow necessary to get an RB engine to 10,000 rpm means its power output will be around 900 bhp. It's not gunna do anything under 6,500 rpm, so driving it on the road is a dream (nightmare actually). The drive train components (clutch, gearbox, diff drive shafts etc.) are constantly going to be breaking. The engine will need a $3K rebuild every 2,500 kilometres.

Bottom line, even if you do all the assembly work yourself, there is not going to any change out of $30K.

Probably getting a bit carried away with the revs...sorry....in fact I dont even know why I said that...must be after the night shifts...

What I am really after is an engine with a nice fat torque curve. An RB30 with RB26 heads would suit me perfectly but I dont want to have to engineer or replace looms and computers etc...

I do anticipate forged pistons...maybe wiseco...forged rods...a bit of light head work...some NA cams or better if I can afford it when I get to there, lightened flywheel...new clutch...

I think this should make a strong engine....Are there any particular ways I can get my fat torque curve, I understand turbo choice makes a big difference...but is there anything else I can do in the actual build??

What I am really after is a

Hi Russ, usual stuff, keep the compression ratio up, as close to 9 to 1 as you can get. Select the turbo/turbos for the maximum power you want with the sweetspot on the compressor flow map just to the left of the max you need. Make sure that it/they make some boost at 1/3 of maximum revs ie; if reving to 7,500 rpm max, must make some boost by 2500 rpm. Adjustable camshaft pulleys and equal length exhaust manifold/manifolds help. A set of 256 degree camshafts with high lift will also help, if you have the budget. Make sure it is tuned for good power spread not just a single max.

I am not fussed how much max power it makes...I am interested in a car I can really drive hard out of corners etc, as much good mid range as I can get...I know its only a 2.2 so this is more difficult but...

How much more $$ would it be to do a rb30 with 26 heads etc than what I am proposing...How have you found parts and info about this hybrid, are they easy enough or do you have to do a fair amount of dicking around to get it to work??

Hi russ, if you want up to 500 bhp you simply bolt the RB26 top end onto the RB30 bottom end. Pick a turbo/turbos and you're away. I would always recommend that the bottom end will need a freshen up (rings, hone, gaskets, seals, bearings etc) and a good balance. You can pick up a reasonable Series 2 N/A RB30 for a coupla hundred and to that add the normal rebuild costs. RB26 top ends are not that easy to find and you could easily spead $3K to $4K on that alone. RB25DE top end is a much cheaper alternative for a lot less money (<$1K).

It's when you want more than 500 bhp that the costs start to escalate. Forged pistons $2K and strong bolts $0.5K if you want 600 bhp, forged rods another $2K if you want 650 bhp plus camshafts $2K etc. Its very easy to get carried away.

Do you know what sort of torque the rb30 with rb25de head would have, just ball park? I imagine it would be light years above the rb20det...

Is there much diff between 25det head or de head?

Is there much weight diff between rb30 and rb20...I gather they are the same block..?

I gather I would need a different loom etc too,

Just thinking that it may work out more power for your money with the rb30 even if you have to swap a loom etc...Would you have to run an aftermarket computer...I gather you would....

one thing I liked about the 32 was that you could just program the ecu ...well for what I want anyway.

Sorry for all the questions, Its just hard to find this info sometimes, If it is all in different threads please tell me, I have done some searches and found some but not alll the info.

The main differences between the rb25 and 26 head is that, the 26 head has 2 valve sizes, smaller for exhaust and larger ones for intake , and the exhaust valve on the 26 is larger than the intake ones on the 25 and also one is hydraulic and the other one is shim. That all i know about the head . also the 26 used squish zone technologies where as all the other rb heads misses out.

Is the following correct?

I can use NA Rb30 bottom end

rb30et crank and rods

RB26 pistons

rb25det or de head (do the exhaust and inlet manifold bolt patterns for both these match??)

and if I get the rb25de head off an r32 then the loom and ecu will fit in my r32 easily....

Or I can use an RB26 head if I have the cash...

I understand there is machining of the block etc and I would get it all xrayed and freshened up...but is this the general idea??

    • I have been being VERY quiet about what you're alluding to, as it is something that ticks me off... The number of cars from factory that run coil overs is HUGE! Most of them these days do... The other part that annoys me, is people saying "Well all the incabin adjustable suspension is illegal by blah blah blah"... If that's the case, then why can I buy a car brand new that can do it if, FULL STOP in cabin adjustable suspension is illegal...   Also, I could just chuck some aftermarket shocks in my car, throw the stock springs on, after my blue slip, dump my super low springs back in. Same shock and spring style setup... Hell, they could also be the same colour springs etc.     I'm voting, BlueSlipper didn't want to touch the above car for some reason. Whether it be some sort of bias against the car, the owner, them maybe having previously done dodgy shit and now they're being super careful in case they get slapped in the face by the Gumbyment again... Find a new blueslip place.   And can confirm as you had said, yes there are holy bibles of vehicle heights, and all sorts of other suspension stuff. Heck your run of the mill mechanic, and tyre shop has access to all of that stuff. It's how they do wheel alignments...
    • Funny story Heading to Sydney this morning on the HWY there was some slow traffic, so I gave it the beans and midway through my overtaking "power run" I lost all power It seems that I missed a hose clamp,  and the MAF and filter went WiFi To make this more problematic, the little tool kit that lives in the boot, is sitting in the sun room at Goulburn......LOL Luckily for me I found a bit of steel on the side of the road that could be used like a rusty and bent flat head screw driver to tighten it up enough that it got me into Sydney, it is now all tight like a tiger with the aid of a 8mm socket Note to self: Use my brain and double check stuff, and always keep that little tool kit in the car for when I have a brain fart
    • Oh, and as for everyone with their fuel economy changes, I switch between E10 and 98 in the company car. Even do when I had personal cars that could run on E10. You know what changed my fuel economy in any noticeable way? How I drove, and where I drove. Otherwise, say on full tanks of just back and forth from work only (So same trips, same sort of traffic), couldn't notice a difference that I can correlate to the type of fuel in use. In the current vehicle, that's over 42L of USABLE fuel. While 98 is all "more energy dense", it also has higher knock resistance as it takes more energy to get it to ignite too. The longer hydrocarbons, typically more tightly bound. So running the same ignition map, can also produce less power, if there isn't enough time to get it all burnt through properly, as yep, the flame propagation speed is different from lower octane fuel to higher (Higher has a lower flame propagation, due to the more tightly bound and harder to self ignite funs. This is also typically where, a vehicle that is designed purely to run on 91 (Whether it be E10 or normal 91) usually sees absolutely no real world difference in fuel economy for the normal man, woman, or dog.
    • We've got some servos around me that have 91 with E10, 91 (no E10), 95, and 98. At those stations the change from 91 E10 to 91, is typically around 8c/L.   But lets not get started on the price of fuel in Oz. It's ridiculous. All the service stations around me, bar one, the price of fuel has been over the $2 mark per litre for the cheapest, 98 being around $2.45. That one service station is a CostCo, fuel from it comes from the same refineries, and makes no pitstops, it runs great, including the 98. In fact, I've had no issues on CostCo fuel, but plenty of issues at other stations!. The CostCo fuel, was $1.65 roughly this week for 94 with E10. $1.88 for 98. Servos directly across from it, $2.10 for 91 E10, and $2.48 for 98. The part I had to laugh at? If I drive multiple HOURS away from Brisbane, say out near Nanango, or Kingaroy, or even out to Goondiwindi, the price of their fuel, is the same as what it is at the CostCo... Oh, and that BP servo at Goondiwindi is HUGE and goes through epic turnover of fuel, so it's not sitting there for weeks going to shit. And what blows me away, my mate is one of the people who drives the Fuel Tanker all around QLD, delivering to all those places. At the same company his previous role was doing the "local haul" deliveries... Same truck, same driver, same pickup point it all comes from. So you tell me, how the hell it is 60c/L CHEAPER for fuel, when nearly all else is equal, except they require a B-Double to drive half a day out of Brisbane, and half a day back, every second day, compared to the delivery that can be under 30 minutes drive from the fuel pickup point... Not to mention, go five blocks down the road, and Ampol to Ampol will vary 30c/L... And I've had this conversation with my mate... The way it's priced, is just typical, pure and utter rubbish... He also does runs from Brisbane, to all over QLD, down to Newcastle, Sydney, Nowra, Melbourne, Geelong, and even out to parts of the NT depending on the companies needs. His main stuff is all the longer distance away from home for a few days at a time, then when he's back, he loves to just pickup extra shifts wherever he can in whichever truck, hence all the weird different places.   Oh, as for getting E10 into all the fuels in Australia... It was very quickly highlighted, that we don't have enough biomass available to use to make E10 sustainably like they require, and it would dramatically cut into our, and the worlds food chain supply...   I vote we all just start running on liquid methane gas... Plenty of that just getting tapped off at tips from underground decay... (Note, this is pure just stupid commenting. I could very easily highlight the reasons its not a good idea especially on scale...)
    • Am I correct in assuming that the R35's are getting the classic skyline haircut off the odometer?  Quick search on carsales, there are 33 08 and 09 GTR's for sale, only 2 of them have more then 100,000km's on them (116,075 and 110,000 respectively).  And somehow there are about 25 for sale with around 60,000kms? Looks like the classic skyline haircut to me =/
