I currently have an R32 gts that has had an RB20det put in it. The gearbox is also RB20DET. but the diff feels like a single spinner it will allways spin the inside rear wheel and when jacked up the wheels spin in opposite directions confirming it in not an LSD.

I have had a look at it and it has 6 bolt half shafts. (3 x 2) bolts. it also has a 4 bolt finned rear cover is it a GTS diff or has it already been converted to GTST?

Are R32GTST diffs 6 bolt half shafts or five?

I think a factory lsd in good nick will be good enough for my needs, so I need to know what sort of diff will bolt up.

I would prefer doing this to taking the centre out and putting a new centre in my housing as I will be putting it in myself and I dont have good or big enough sockets to go pulling crown wheels off.

Can someone list what sort of diffs will fit? Will a GTR mechanical diff fit?

Thanks!

From what I gather...

you can replace the diff centre (shortnose R200... whatever that means).

this won't change the ratio, and is what I would reccomend. Except get an aftermarket mech 1.5 way...

I THINK that you could swap in/out a whole diff. (but I'm not sure... and the rear driveshafts might be different).

second hand lsd's (stock r32 gtst or gtr) will be a bit of a gamble. I recommend something aftermarket such as a Cusco/Kaaz/Nismo 1.5way etc.etc.

You also need to confirm that you have an R200 housing, and it's not an R180 housing. I'm not sure if any of the skylines came with R180's across the range of non-turbo r32's but it's something you need to check, non-turbo s13's came with r180 housings, and the r200 housings and driveshafts bolt straight in.

if it's an R200 housing, an R200 diff centre will fit, but you may also want to check that you're happy with the ratio.

I recommend taking diff's to a diff place to get centres fitted if you don't know what you're doing, because there are shims and washers and crap that align the diff centre with the pinion/crownwheel. A friend once stuffed the alignment up on an Rx7 diff and the diff crapped itself after a week or two....

Will do,

I have spoken to sss automotive and they have a R200 with 3x2 half shafts that will bolt into my car but at this stage they do not know wether it is a 1, 1.5, or 2 way or what brand it is.

they want $700 for it. I might get them to find out exactly what's in it and if it's a 1.5 way kaaz/nismo I will take it :D

or does $700 sound too much for a 2nd hand diff.

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... HTH
    • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
