Just finished changing my timing belt and pulleys. Started up the car and came across a weird problem. The car wont rev. It starts and idles fine, but when you give it any throttle, even WOT it doesn't rev at all. Everything else seems to be fine. CAS was put back in exactly the same place it was when i pulled it off, also double checked its plugged in. Any ideas what's happened?

doesn't rev like the accelerator pedal is not connected? Or tries to and can't?

Did you line up the belt markings with the marking on the cover etc etc? I don't know if putting the intake and exhaust cams out of whack would produce that effect or not...

Tries to and can't. The belt was put on with all the markings and everything lined up properly.

how high will it rev when you try?

1k, 2k?

maybe one of the sensors is not plugged in. tps, afm, etc. check all connections.

make sure all your intercooler pipes are conntected and there are no leaks..

It would only rev to 1k rpm tops. I didn't think intake cam being only 1 tooth out would make that much diference?

Checked all plugs on CAS, AFM and TPS. I was thinking along the lines of a bodgy TPS as there doesn't seem to be any reaction to throttle movements at all. I might run diagnostics when i get home from work and see if there's any codes.

Just ran diagnostics. Only code 55 which i'm pretty sure is because it used to be auto and i did a manual conversion so the computer thinks the auto isn't responding. So this would pretty much rule out all sensors wouldn't it?

Some more progress. Twisted the cas about 5mm left and it seems to be behaving a bit better now. Actually getting it to rev now but still seems a bit dodgy. Should i grab a timing light and check the timing?

Alrighty. Let it warm up and disconnected the AAC valve as per workshop manual's instructions, then checked the timing wtih a timing light. With the CAS in the position i had it to rev properly it was advanced to buggery (just about going off the scale of marks on the harmonic balancer) so i put it back to the original position and it was still advanced which was 1st mark past 0 degrees (which i'm guessing is 5 degrees??).

This is really frustrating the crap out of me. What the hell is going on with my car?!?

whip the covers off the front and wind the engine over and see if your marks are still lined up, just to rule out any chance you have the belt out a tooth

Yes do this.

Sounds like your cam timing is out. Not a good idea to run the engine either as you could have pistons hitting valves if your not careful.

So.. markings on the engine-part, markings on the belt, markings on the cam gears... right?

Make sure you put your CAS back to where it was. there should be a paint marking... about 15 degrees before top dead centre? I think it's about that for R33's?

    • Sane enough. Remove the roof liner, because the acid will go everywhere.
    • Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help and experienced opinions.  I have spent a lot of my life working on boats so I'm pretty good with fibreglass. I'll take everybody's advice in here;  I'll cut a little more of the 2nd layer away as it's a bit crunchy rust and also it's sitting high now. Then I'll wire brush it all a bit to get off anything loose, then I'll soak the bejesus out of it all in rust converter. I'll make sure to get a little hose piece and feed it into all the holes and gaps between the roof layers. Then I'll fibreglass up the holes.  Then I'll get a pallet of filler and mix it with 3 buckets of hardener and hope that is enough to build up the roof corner.  Does that sound sane? Is one type of filler better than others for this?
    • My goals for it atm are to get it registered, respray and some mild power gains eventually... I picked up the car from an elderly gentleman near the border of NSW and VIC, its honestly a bit rough and looks like its been driven on a farm (because there was so much dirt underneath). Last week I dropped the subframe and emptied the old fuel out + added a new fuel pump (think the old one went bad from old fuel). Now I'm onto fixing a coolant leak at the rear of the engine + adding a new radiator as the old one is corroded. After that i have a new bumper, coils (as the old were leaking) and lots more
    • Welcome buddy! Plenty on here and YouTube. What are your plans for it? Good luck with the Rwc and Rego bud!
    • Love this so much! Please post a photo when you have a bike on the trailer.  I was a little bit worried about having a tow bar on the Skyline, but having it hidden behind the number plate is genius
