cheap intercooler upgrade?

i had this thought after reading all your posts. please don't make an idiot of me if this idea is stupid as i have never heard anyone mention it or anything.

an intercooler works just like a radiator right? except for air instead of water running through...

so...why wouldn't a small electric fan from say a motorbike mounted behind the intercooler work to help increase the airflow over the stock intercooler? there is plenty of room after the 'cooler and it seems to be very efficient for a radiator so why not for the intercooler??

has anyone done this or tried it and removed because it was useless?

Sounds alright to me, it would only help for periods where you are stopped in traffic tho? If you had a water spray setup with it it would be pretty good.

not likely to be under boost whilst stopped at traffic, and higher speedds when you would be under boost there is already plenty of air flow. The whole idea of an intercooler is to remove heat generated by the compressing of the air, with not boost there is no added heat.

The position of the intercooler in front of the wheel arch prolly means there is a fair bit of air being sucked through (by the lower air pressure in the wheel arch) when moving. Fan might not help this.

would a r34 intercooler bolt on to r33 without changing the pipe?

um when i used to have an pulsar et turbo when i was 16 my a few ppl would place small fans on their intercooler for that exact reason. it is a benefit by cooling it down by some degree BUT i beleive this is better used for a intercooler that is engine mounted or mounted in the engine bay aas some small powered 4cylinders do in older cars eg, cordia, et.....but in the later model cars such as silvias 180s skylines etc they have been placed in a very good position behind and its postion does let in a lot of air but of course nothing beat front mount

think the pipes look like the same size. if i'm not wrong, there is a factory ram-air directing air to the intercooler, works like a custom air induction, so at speed, the amount of air going to the intercooler would be sufficient, eliminating the need for a fan.

Since the thread name said cheap intercooler upgrade I though I'd throw this in. You could always go find a junked Supra and take the intercooler and front mount it. Just need to make piping.

well it wouldnt b a ma70 cos thats a water cooler

and the 1jz is similar to ours so he would prolly b referin to the 2jz which has a cooler similar to the ER34, but the 2jz is thicker.

I would say just go the ER34 as its a straight bolt in.

ma70 turbo supras came with a front-mount intercooler as standard didn't they? what do you mean it's a water cooler?

jms have the supra front mount coolers for a couple hundred, the r34 coolers above look to be better quality and dont require plumbing worth double the cost of the supra cooler
