I've just spent several hours searching to try and find the true fill capacity of an R33 gts25t manual gearbox, but at the end of it I'm still not sure. Some people say that service manuals\owners handbooks list 2.5-2.8L while others say that they use up to 3.8L before the oil comes out the filler hole. When I did my change today i measured the old oil and it was roughly 2.5L, so I filled it back up with slightly more then this. This left the level slightly below the filler hole. I doubt that the oil has been changed previously, so I'm almost definate that this is the correct amount, but given that so many people seem to be using more does anyone actually know the amount specified by Nissan?

While I'm asking, does anyone know the capacity and weight\grade Nissan specifies for the Viscous LSD?

I know the LSD's are about 1.8L

I jacked the drivers side up to drain it, but I don't think it would have been enough to keep an extra 1L of oil in the gearbox. In fact I felt around the edge of the drain hole and couldn't feel any oil remaining. Did you measure how much oil you drained the first time you did it?

NO NO, don't drain it. hope i've managed to catch you in time.

Just jack it level, like have it on 4 stands. Then start filling it until it starts coming out of the filler hole ever so slightly (as in dont' pump it like crazy until it pours out of the hole).

Then, it'll be a good 3.5+L.

Do you have an rb25 box? or an rb20 box? if it's an rb20/rb30 box, they are substantially smaller and take approx 2ish L instead of the 3.8

Cheers

Yeah decided to find out exactly what the right amount is. But in the end the results don't really help! I drained out 2.7-2.8L so there was definately no more then 2.8L in there to start with. The car's done 75000kms, so it may have had a change in Japan, but then again it could be just as it left the Nissan factory. When I refilled it however it took about 3.7L to fill until it ran out the drain hole. At the end of the day I don't know which figure is correct, but I'm going to stick with the tried and tested method of filling to the fill hole.

    • Why are you so adamant on going M12? Why not follow Brad (GTSBoy) suggestion. You're talking moving from a 1/8" size, to a 1/2" effectively. 4 times bigger. Why skip the commonly available sizes in between? The bigger you go, the more likely you are to strip the threads out at a later date, as guaranteed, someone will put a huge spanner on the M12 and really tighten it up, and you're only in thin wall, so not a lot of threads to engage!
    • Hi. Yeah thanks. Car is already at tuners and it staying there to resolve "many" issues they do not like. So it is in a good hands. Getting a good tune on that Nistune ECU too so the car would be good. Just needs a little tune up and love.
    • Probably gonna remove manifold and turbo. I’m not sure if I can get M12 x 1.5 air tight. Could use high temp Loctite 246 or something similar, but I don’t know. Maybe it’s just best to remove everything again and weld an 1/8NPT on there instead.
    • Yeah, saw the ratios, not impressed. Would like the punch I have in the first gears now. With those ratios it won't be the same.  Also want the h pattern gearing, or at least a quiet gear set that don't need to come apart for service each year. Looks like the only "reasonable" way Is a 8hp70 transmission, but where is the fun in that🤷‍♂️
