there legal on r32 and i think some early 33s if search round there is a thread on it

I was pretty sure all that stuff about "if its made before.." turned out to be a myth.

That the bonnets have to be ADR approved no matter what you're putting them on?

  • 1 month later...

Carbon Fibre bonnets DO NOT MEET ADR.. and are illegal for normal road use..

ADR approval can be attained but they will need to test your bonnet to make sure it meets all ADR specifications.

testing facilities are few and far between though so good luck finding one that will help..

on another note why not copy your local transport header onto MS word and print your own ADR approval out, i've seen it work before...

(i take no responsibilities and do not condone illegal behaviour)

bye for now

Hey Noy do the Custom Carbon bonnets meet ADRs? I remember reading somewhere a while back that some of yours had approval.

we looked into it and with the costs involved its not viable at the moment.. maybe if carbon becomes cheaper... who knows

Yep i know first hand having owned one and been fined then ordeed to change it. They are illeagle as no CArbon bonnet has passed and ADR approval, if ur in QLD cops have been cracking down on it.

The only solution i found was a fibre glass option from www.Blitsbodykits.com.au . They are the only manufacture of fibreglass vented bonnets that meet ADR and come with a ADR letter so u will have no problems with the police. They are a great price! particularly when u take into account the ADR approval. Having owned a C/F bonnet and now this ADR fibreglass bonnet i can say structurally the ADR fibregalss one is tops! i would not get any thing else :)

Sounds like a fair comment!!

thanks for the input!!

(as Im in the process of sussing out the pluses and minuses of C/F)

there all illegal! carbon fibre shatters in an accident like a sheet of glass and splinters bad. therefore making a mess of the driver and pedestrians. doesnt pass adr even if you tried.

^^^^ is a MYTH, cf material will never shatter and break like glass, remember epoxy and resins do flex to a certain degree and CF is very fibrous, they will snap but certainly not shatter and fly away.

No they dont meet ADR approval as has already been mentioned due to high costs but there are ways around that!!!

Its quiet a leagnthy process getting ADR for bonnets.

I was having a casual chat with the owners of Blitsbodykits. they are the only company so far to have a aftermaket vented bonnet ADr approved an dits fibreglass ( i own one). they mentioned the R&D proccess was long wined as when a desing was completed QT would then want some thing changed. The restrictions put in place to meet the ADR end up making hte bonnet heavier than soem of the C/F and fibreglass bonnets doing hte rounds. The end result of the ADR bonnet howver is one of very high structural streangth and quality.

I wouldnt got back to a C/F one after this ADR one. Would be good to see if a C/F one can get approval.

sorry, haven't researched as thorough as some, but the fibreglass bonnets from blitsbodykits.com.au are roughly priced at 800.. isnt that the price of a carbon fibre hood tho? yes, they're illegal and yes, those come with adr papers, but if you bought a non-vented carbon fibre hood and painted it, would police officers even notice? it'd just look standard right...

just sussing out some options for the near future..

I thought of painting my C/F one too, but with occasoin road side police checks i didnt want ot risk it.

As soon as the police man lifts the bonnet it is obvious its not the stock metal one.

If you think you cna get away with it id just paint it too.

Its also quiet satisfing when the police man says he is ticketting u for the bonnet and you whip out a ADR letter :)

I know a couple of guys with painted C/F bonnets and they havent had any dramas as of yet.

yeh but it also depends on the officer at the time. hear about lots of coppas issuing fines/defects regardless. but yeah, will definitely look into getting a colour-coded c/f bonnet.

cheers champ,

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
