hello fellas just noticed a weird sound coming from the egine bay of my r33 a couple days ago

it would only be audible when i turn on the car and its still cool but once it warms up it goes away

but now its getting real bad and never goes away

noise sounds like its ticking like injectrs do so when its idling its ticking about 4 times a second. and i rev it it gets faster and faster, especially when im actually driving and hit boost it goes so quick its like a sort of whistle

i thought it was the BOV faulty somehow but i listened under the bonnet this mornign and it seems like it is coming from the back of the engine close to the firewall where the spark plugs are around there in the camshaft housing. could even go as bad as saying it sounds like there is no oil getting to the tappets

also what is that thing ontop of the motor right at the back it has a connector either side, is it the ingiter or something? could it be that?

need some help as all mechanics are closed today so i dont want to destroy it by thetime it gets looked at

thanks

just to add

the noise is getting VERY loud, as in it is louder than my car eveyone car hear it, it is there all the time now non stop

i got a screwdriver and put one end to any suspect parts like the rocker covver, turbo etc but i couldnt hear anything ticking

help =(

ok as it is now when the car is idling it is a fairly loud ticking/tapping noise sort of like what the injectors sound like but much louder (maybe tappets)

when i accelerate this gets louder and also quicker so it sounds like it is in sync with the engine rpm

when i get off the throttle it sounds like when it is idling as in it gets slower and softer

its at the point now where i cant drive the car the noise is so bad/loud

also when on boost it is going so fast its turned into a sort of whistle

ill tell u one thing, this is a noise that really concerns me its not just some random little ticking u may hear.

also have an exhaust leak from the manifold, looks to have a bolt snapped off or not put in, could it be that? going over a mechanics place tonight for a quick check to see whether i should take it to work or not tomorrow

could be a tappet come loose somehow. i doubt its because theyre not getting oil cuz theyd be completely buggered by now. it could be that leak in the manifold too. my mate had a suzuki sierra which had a bit of a gap between the manifold and the head at one end of the manifold and that sounded kinda the same. the only problem with that is you should probably be able to smell fumes while youve got ur head under the bonnet when the engine is running. its either that or something else has come loose inside the motor. prbly a good idea not to drive it. best to get it checked out straight away.

cant really get to the hole easily and its bloody hot too

yeah i got a turbo, was going to fix it when the turbo failed so i can do it all in one

will let yas know what it is in about half hour (going mechanics place now)

YAYYYYYYYYY, its only the exhaust manifold gasket and possibly a couple studs broken

its still ganna cost about $400 for parts + labour but thats much better than a new head or whatever

thanks for everyones help

    • Version 1 aluminium airbox is.......not acceptable No pics as I "didn't like the look.....alot" Even after all my "CAD", and measurements, the leg near the fusebox just didn't sit right as it ended up about 10mm long and made the angle of the dangle look wrong, the height was a little short as well, meh, I wasn't that confident that Version 1 was going to be an instant winner I might give Version 2 another go, there's plenty of aluminium at work, but, after having in on and off a few times, and laying in the old OEM airbox without the new pod filter and MAF, there may be an option to modify the OEM air box and still use the Autoexe front cover and filter.... maybe This >  Needs to fit in here, but using the panel, and not the pod, the MAF will need to fit in the airbox though> I'm thinking as the old OEM box and Autoexe cover that is sitting in the shed is just sitting around doing nothing, and they are relatively abundant and cheap to replace if I mess it up and need another, it may well fit with some modifications to how the Autoexe brackets mounts to the rad support, and some dremiling to move it get in there, should give me some more room for activities, as I don't want to move the MAF and affect the tune Sealing the hole it requires to stick it in the air box is simple, a tight fit and some pinch weld will seal it up tight  I am calling this a later problem though
    • and it ends up being already priced in as though you're just on 91RON without any ethanol. Car will lose a bit of economy as the short and long term fuel trims bring down the AFR back to stoich or whatever it is for cruise/idle for the engine.
    • Oh, you are right. But, in Australia E10 is based on 91RON fuel and ends up being 94RON. Hence it being the cheaper option for economy cars. The more performance oriented cars go for the 98RON fuel that has no ethanol mixed in. The only step up we have left then at some petrol stations is E85.
    • There is a warning that "this thread is super old" but they ignore that anyway...
    • With 10% Ethanol, we're talking 2-3% fuel consumption difference. The emissions reductions and octane boost in my opinion far outweigh this almost non existent loss.    My tanks sitting at 80%. Luckily that should go down fast as I'm on vacation again for the next two weeks.
