Ok, ok, I know my new toy is not technically a skyline at all, but anyone interested in this really early Datsun 6 is welcome to contact me through PM, or at [email protected].

It's an awesome '65 Cedric station wagon, 109bhp, j series in-line 6, 3 spd man, one of 3 know in aust, and by the time I'm done it'll eat my best mate's Toyota Crown wagon of the same era - and that's the important thing.

Naturally, if anyone has parts or info in relation to this rare beast you can be my new best friend.

What are your plans?

Maybe a VH41 in place of the J series, that should frighten the sh!t out of your mate, or maybe a VQ35, but for sheer sound and shock factor I would go with the V8. :P

And they aren't gas guzzlers as everyone likes to think, my 1UZ MX83 Cressida just returned 10.88L/100 overall for 2754km Sydney - Gold Coast & return. On short cruise mode runs, eg Palm Beach to Grafton it returned under 10L/100 and for a 4.0L 32V Quad Cam V8 I think it's amazing.

It's always good to see someone with something different :pwned:

I'll post pics as soon as I get back to Melb and pick it up. It needs a bit of love and attention, so the first plan of attack will to get everything cleaned up and in good going order, then Ill start to assess what, if any modifications I'll make... although Im already having fantasies of lowering it and banging on a set of white-walls.

Apparently it is pretty rare. I only know of 3 others at this stage.

There she is... scruffy, but totally restorable! This model was penned by Pinninfarina of all people. It seats 8. There is a pop up dickie seat that faces out the rear window, or the rear seats all fold down into a massive flat area. The tailgate window is electric and it still works! Woo hoo! Woo hoo!

Anyone interested in a Datsun Fairlady convertible body shell and bits going cheap through the same seller should let me know. It'd make a great project too.

SCRUFFY??? mate it will buff out...

And what the hell is a J series! man it looks like it was pulled out of my grandads fishing boat! along with the battery (Look at the size of it!!!)

is it powered by the battery, and the engine to charge it up??? (joke!)

It would be a great project... red/white leather interior, white wall tyres,polished chrome everywhere,chopped springs... if it were mine i would chuck in a L series, (cos there are stacks of em around) but the sump configuration would be interesting!

Thanks for the interest all. Frustratingly I still havent picked up the car yet. This week the former owner will be in town to clean his crap out of the car and to hand over all the bits and pieces from his house.

At this point I know the car will need:

a muffler

some rubbery bits under the car

a tune up

rego and RWC

carpet

and lots of love and attention to get it looking like a car again, especially that scrape down the rear door...

Being the world's crudest mechanic, a car this simple has real appeal for me. As for the mods... First priority will be to get her going as is... but there is a jet black VW wagon running around where I live with the whitewalls, venetians and sitting on its guts that does look pretty sexy. Worse still my Crown-driving mate has just invested in a late-model supra engine for his 72 coupe. Maybe I am going to need the VQ41 after all lol!

That 109bhp was achieved with a REALLY restrictive exhaust and a puny carb.

Install a big bore exhaust from the manifold back.

Adapt a better carb (I think these were a single barrel in which case a 6 cyl h Holden unit would be pretty good).

Remove the engine fan and go electric.

Fit a GOOD ignition upgrade (the Silicon Chip HEI kit available from Jaycar, Dick Smiths etc is plenty good for this car)

I would estimate as much as 30hp could be found just with these alone so 109bhp would actually be horses instead of the ponies they measured things with back then. That should fix up the Toyota!!

Thanks so much for the tips! I have to say that the things you have suggested are more realistic for me in terms of my slightly sorry-looking budget (stupid credit card!)

I hear what you are saying about the carb, the "cedric special" of the same year was a twin-carb model churning out 123bhp! I have a reco'd single carb from my old L24, but am not sure if it could be adapted to the Cedric manifold without hurting my feelings.

I only suggested the 41 because the 45 wouldn't fit. :):):huh::P

But for my money, if it was mine i would research it for a while, a good week on the net, find out the biggest and best that would look stock but give it some grunt.

Remember pre 76 had no ADR's so the sky is really the limit.

A good set of headers, with a decent exhaust system, maybe a webber, like the 40mm twin down draught IDE's, about 9:1 comp, see someone about a cam maybe, any luminition type (optical) electronic ignition and you would have a very nice vehicle.

BUT! If you want an out & out BEAST, VQ41 would be my go.

Just quietly I spent ages on the Planet Cedric website trying to tell the damn things apart! The range of very similar looking models from 62 to 66 huge! Deluxe, standard, special, super, wagon, VAN! 4's, 6's, 30, 31, 130... eek!

What I just found was P130 came out with L20, L24 engines as well, so that's what I would be doing.

L20/24/28??? nobody is going to know. 65 -71 L20 twin carbs.

You can probably get 240Z twin carb manifolds still if you look hard enough. Maybe webber manifolds too depending how much of a beast Vs classic you want.

Honestly, I have no big objections to going to a twin carb L series, even the webbers are a great period mod, but I kinda like the idea of being the only kid on my block with a warm J series engine, even if it isn't the modder's choice.

Still, cant help wondering if the L series engine would marry the J series box without too much grief... where's my tape measure... :mellow:

Problem with the J series is I can't find any info on them, neither can I get info on the 2900 K series.

If your going to do a big J series it's going to be a fair bit of hit and miss.

Maybe, you can do as I am. I'm keeping everything from my PNV, original engine, lights, not suspension as it was stuffed, but bonnet etc etc etc so if need be it can be put back to near original, but for me it will be a bit of a beast.

If your going to blow away your mate your going to need more than a J series.

    • Sounds like you've got an interesting adventure ahead here with local support if you have trouble! My guess is that, unboosted, you will be OK with a small upgrade like -9. What will happen is that once the stock ECU sees more airflow than it expects it will add a heap of fuel and pull a heap of timing to be safe because it can't understand how it could get that much air without there being an issue. You will see clouds of black smoke and it won't pull hard through the midrange and top end. So, overall it will be a bit frustrating but should be OK. If you are still nervous set the base timing back 2o through the CAS, but it will be even more sluggish everywhere. As said above through...this is not my guarantee your engine won't be blown into a million pieces, leaving you looking for very hard to find parts A better idea is get a computer with logging ASAP, wire in a wide band O2 sensor and a use remote tuner. I've done multiple cars this way and while it is not as good as a specific tune on a dyno they can get it 90% right. I'd suggest if you can afford an R33 GTR these days you can afford an ECU and tune. And if you can't afford that you sure won't be able to afford the rebuild if it goes bad in the meantime,.  
    • Yeah it would be nice if someone took the time to put that sort of information together, but there are a lot of variations in looms. I think you are making this way hard for yourself if you just want to get it running....sourcing an SR20 with the right wiring will be a billion times easier than matching the RB loom to an S15 chassis. If you do end up going this way, you just need to trace every wire in the loom with a multimeter, 95% of them will go to a location you can confirm at the ECU.....and then post it up for the next person who needs it  
    • Just top it up with water, and keep a general idea of how much you added. It is normal for water to be pushed into and pulled out of the reservoir through the cap, and it should not be more than half full or it will be likely to overflow when hot. Any decent mechanic can do a pressure test of the cooling system to confirm if you have a leak. Keep in mind if it is only leaking a little and when hot it may well evaporate before you see it hit the ground
    • I'd ask the shop what they used and use that. Mixing coolants is sometimes OK, sometimes not, and you have know the details of each coolant to know whether it's a good idea or not.
    • Is it alright to top up with just another green coolant?
