ho did u know it was pinging?? was the knock reading over 60% on the h/c ?

this powerfc sounds interesting....

i have not owned or study it at all....although i did test drive an r33 which had one installed... it went nice and hard....

can you tell me how much they cost and where i can find technical info on them?

after using LINK, Wolf 3d, Haltech, seeing what motec can do and studying autronic, i would love to compare.

what are big power mods Al? Is big power mods defined as

- Larger Injectors?

- Aftermarket Cam Shafts?

- Aftermarket Turbo?

- FMIC?

- Big NISMO Sticker?

First three. Forth can be delt with by the apexi, and the fifth by the wanky ricers :P.

The best programmable ecu, is the one your trusted mechanic can tune. No use having a Wolf if he has only delt with a Pfc and isn't able to extract and use all features :uh-huh:.

But if you plan to change the first three items listed above, do the ecu first, as this alone will give you a noticable differance.

Good luck with your decision

rs73 - yepp, that's my understanding.

I've heard 'stories' of people pluging in a new PFC and gaining 15rwkw just from the base map it comes with..

Not sure how true this is, but sounds tempting.

u may get a slight power increase but the car will be pining off it tits as the fuel maps r based on jap 104 RON fuel

i wish it was that simple that the best ecu is the one your mechanic can tune the best.

Personally i would, and have always had my cars tuned by the workshop the particular ECU company recommended to tune, supply and fit.

Al,

why you wouldn't wanna change factory IC with FMIC, considering with afm injectors, cam, & turbo?

what would be the factory IC efficiency is, don't think it will be effective for boost above 12 psi.

The original question was: what do i consider big mods to justify a ecu replacement. If you only plan to go as far as a fmic i am suggesting to use a apexi safc to trim the fuel curve. Of course you need to replace that shitty factory ic. If you are planning a turbo upgrade, etc. than a replacement ecu is a priority.

    • I can get more photos of it here soon and I plan to make a thread detailing the process. I received the car this way and it sorely needs refinishing. That is probably the most appealing photo of it. Up close it is fading, cracked, and needs to be re-glued. Depending on their condition I'm on the fence between refinishing or making a new set.  Another angle hiding the pimples and razor pumps
    • According to this thread the RS4V with build plate RC40 comes with the R200 diff @ 4.083 ratio as well (mine has said RC40 denotation). We may need to check if the axle stubs are the same pattern as well. The auto subframes have longer axles. However I think yours being a later Series 2 as well, we should have the same bolt pattern for the diff stubs. Unless your upgraded rear also has upgraded axles. Either way, I would not be opposed to pulling the covers to check so I can inspect that  fancy rear core  Also I don't have HICAS. I don't believe that should change things but I hope the people here with heaps more experience than me can correct me if I'm wrong   Let me know if you want to attempt to make this work and I can get some pictures of mine from under the car.
    • It's not that straightforward. For example I have had this code because my ignitor/power transistor wires were unplugged. It knows something is wrong but has no idea what it means. If you want to actually diagnose this I recommend following the service manual flowchart for code 21. Ohm out the harness, coilpacks, inspect the ECU, etc. And again, it's entirely possible for there to be no problem at all but if you're running a different coilpack it'll trigger the code because it doesn't like what it sees.
    • If it (the code) wasn't still current, it should have gone away by itself by now. No, nothing it 10/10. But it is quite likely. Everything else to do with the ignition could still be responsible (which is wires and connectors). The car is an old piece of shit now, so all the wires and connectors are also old pieces of shit.
