well the time has come to top-up my HICAS oil as the pump's been making a bit of noise the past two days and is a bit low.

I opened the cap up and saw that the oil in there wasn't the pink i expected.

it was yellow.

Now, i thought that you can just use normal Power Steering fluid in there (which from my expiriances is pink) but this stuff being yellow has me thinking that there might be a different oil ?

And auto part places look at me weird when i say it's yellow.

Any pointers/advice on what to use ?!?!?!?

wanna do it soon before the pump blows up.

mechanic's i've spoken too (a fair few)

no idea they say. never seen yellow oil before is all i hear.

And the response is just put any old pink P/S oil in it...

But i'm reluctant to do it as i don't wanna if it's gotta be a specific type of oil as the HICAS is hydralic (sp) and stuff on a 31 (same as a 32).

Last thing i need is to try and find a 31 HICAS P/S pump. I know what my chances are of that.

From my experiance, Auto-tran fluid is pink, brake fluid is a tranparent/clear/yellow and P/S fluid is greenish... this prob won't be of any use to you, and prob complicate the situation futher!

I'd have to agree with DAHXX, ask a nissan dealer, or my a compliance/performance workshop???

sorry, no very useful... never had to do mine before either!

Does the R31 have a separate reservoir for the Hicas?

My R32 shares the reservoir, I know because when my steering fluid level got low my HICAS light flashed before anything else (I had a leak at the PS pump).

Any old power steering fluid should do it (or auto gearbox fluid if your in a pinch and cant get anything else, trust me it works). It's all hydraulic fluid after all. I wouldn't be too concerned.

Can't say I've ever looked at the colour of oils/fluids before though.

Dave, with that leak was it just the hose / loose hose? Or did you have to replace the pump? Mine is leaking a bit and I removed and checked the hose and it was fine  Made sure the clamps are nice and tight now but havent tested it yet...will be testing [driving] it tomorrow.

Thanks.

    • Sorry to hear your HFM BM57 was faulty,  did you contact HFM I would hope they would be at least grateful for the information if there was some sort of manufacturing fault, you would hope they would be sympathetic even if your item was 2 years old if it had never been fitted. May I ask where it leaked from ?

LOL I have already installed cat doors into the laundry where their kitty litter is, and the sun room, apart from the cat doors there's not going to be any permanent mounted stuff on the interior walls (interior doors are cheap and easy to replace) I will get a outdoor cat cage thingie once I finish the landscaping out back... https://catnip.com.au/ The only off limit areas are the main bedroom and the gym room....but, currently the cats are curled up in bed, in the main bedroom with the Mrs.....LOL, the off limits for the kittens to the main bedroom lasted about 5 minutes with Jackie I currently only have 1 free standing huge cat tree multiple level scratching post thingie in the lounge room, but, I will be getting another one soon now that I'm happy with the furniture layout in the back room and have a perfect spot for it
    • All of this is making it seem clear that running the Coppermix twin was definitely the way to go, especially in hindsight with how insane tariffs have gotten and the strength of the USD vs yen at the time.
    • That sounds like no chance of even importing one for road registering then Now I see why Duncan wants to check LHD rules for Targa...   I wonder how "bolt in" the AWD would be if you got one imported from the US and swapped it to an AUD one
    • Not to mention they drive like a bucket of bolts! yuck!
