Is it really worthwhile purchasing one?

for a r33 gtst sII with some slight mods:

fmic

pod

catback

soon boost controller, bov and dump pipe.

I have read up on it, but is says that the sotck ecu in the nissans are just as good and the poer fc doesnt really make ur car faster just manages things better (better for your car in terms of looking after it???)

Cheers

Don't know where you read stock ecu is just as good but the any alteration to the ecu (provided tuned well) will be better than stock ecu.

It's not so much top end power which I'm impressed, but the midrange power which makes me smile.

Hi Champinco, suggestions follow.............

"lumpy told me the r33 afm was only good up till 280rwhp hmmm..."

More like 240 rwkw, then move up to the Z32 AFM, same diameter (80 mm) but resolution at higher airflows. Good for 300 rwkw, then go to Infinity (90 mm) AFM good for close to 400 rwkw.

It has been our experience that Skylines with AFM's run nicer than those with MAP's. There is simply no better way to measure the airflow into an engine than an AFM. MAP's simulate the airflow by reading the pressure, so not as accurate.

Hope that helps

The PowerFC is quite an economical solution really...

Now a z32 afm is not that much, you can match it up to ANY boost controller (strongly recommend you do not get the FC boost header). The HC is useful for your tuner. To me it wasn't worth going for a half assed solution. I hate paying for labour.

Hi T0nyGTSt, I find the Commander very usefull (other than for tuning of course). We use them as a display for boost, inlet air temperature, water temperature, detonation, injector duty etc etc. I don't think it is fair to compare prices by including the Commander with the boost controller and then excluding the Commander with AVC-R. The AVC-R is not a Commander replacement.

The solenoid in the PFC boost control kit and the solenoid in the AVC-R is exactly the same part number, so they should both provide the same quality of boost control.

So PFC + Commander + boost control kit is cheaper than PFC + AVCR + Commander. That's the way I look at it anyway. Expecially as in Torrens case, where he already has a Commander with his PFC.

Hope that clarifies my thoughts.

What I'm getting at is that the AVC-R is a fully intelligent boost controller with scramble, different boost per gear, multiple boost settings etc. etc.

The manual goes on and on.

Now what do you get with the FC + HC + boost header? None of the above. Just boost control.

Of course you're all free to do what I do... FC + AVC-R + HC :P

avcr has been around for ages, but some people say it looks more fancy than other boost controllers but doesent do as much

Hi GOTRICE, you asked.........

"just to clarify we want our afms to be reliable and accurate for more than just one drag (240rwkw), are you saying lumpys wrong?"

We have seen over 20 GTST's with more than 280 rwhp on the standard AFM. We have 2 that make more than 250 rwkw (350 rwhp) on the standard AFM.

So, whilst I can't say that "lumpys wrong" (he may have experienced 1 or more cars that display AFM problems at 280 rwhwp), what I can say for certain is I have not personally had that same experience.

Moving on, we don't drag race our cars, circuit racing is our thing and I can assure you we would not risk loosing a race if I thought the AFM was going to let us down. In comparison to the other costs involved, an AFM is peanuts, we would change it in an instant if it was necessary.

Hope that clarifies my thoughts on AFM's.

Hi T0nyGTSt, you said AVC-R allows "different boost per gear". I have never used an AVC-R for that, can you let me know how it knows what gear you are in at any time? Does it have, like a sensor that goes on the gearbox to tell it what position the selector forks are in? Or maybe it reads off the tacho and the speedo and does quick calculation to work out the gearbox ratio and therefore compare that with a look up table so it knows what gear the box is in? But then it would have to know the diff ratio and the tyre size as well, wouldn't it? Oh and it would have to have a different look up table of gear ratios for all sorts of cars, that would be a lot wouldn't it? And you would have to select all that information from one of the AVC-R menus wouldn't you?

"multiple boost settings", that's 3 button pushes on the Commander isn't it? Not that I'm a believer in having more than one boost setting, that's what the throttle is there for.

Hope that adds further to the AVC-R versus PFC Boost Control Kit discussion.

    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
