Hi all,

i turned on my R33 series 2 after 6 months in repairs after having an accident. I came to turn it over today and it turned and sounded like a rotary cutting off. I installed my FMIC (intercooler) rouughly, just enough to suck in air, added some oil and jumped started the car. The car has been off since 6 months, however about 4 months ago started it and it turned over. The car is cutting, sounds like a rotary cutting off. As the battery has been dead, maybe my powerfc computer has been reset, i dont know. the car idles very bad, i have no water in the radiator but not sure if thats the problem to why the car is making so much noise?

any suggestions to why the car is idling weird.

thanks

John

i cant seem to see the problem with the car, do u have a potential solution or are theses forums arguments and commenting on pointless unrelated issues.

eh?

Ok first question - What does "installed my intercooler roughly" mean? You either install it or you dont!?

Boost/vacuum leak = idling issues

John....after being in a work shop...panel beater..etc.

I do believe your filter, afm has alot of dust and need to be cleaned.

The other thing it could be is your spark plugs...these can rust up on the ends.

They may also need changing.

Also you could be correct in assuming the cpu has re-set itself.

I am sure ,while there has been no power, some-one could have pressed down on the brake for more than a few seconds.

But if this was the case your car would idle untill it went back to factory settings.

The only other thing could be is your fuel pump might have seized or is on the way out.

Get yourself a new battery and test your fuel pressure.

Clean your plugs, air filter and afm.

If this does not work...I am sure you have an air-leak from your fmic

Hope this is a logical explanation.

OH...Put some water in your radiator...lol

Sorry to be a royal pain in the arse, however i am having the same problem with my daily driven 32 gtr, is there any way of checking for a vacuum or boost leak with out stripping everything bare? i have been putting up with this for the last couple of month's and i am sick to death of it! everything else you mentioned i have replaced but to no avail

Agree with all of that although AFIAK the powerfc doesnt have volatile memory so if the battery is removed/disconnected for a long period the PFC shouldnt lose its tune..

And.. yeah coolant in the radiator is the first step!!

You can try cleaning out your AAC valve also. This has solved hunting and idle issues for other people in the past. You will find a DIY in the FAQ/DIY section (although it is for RB25DET it might not be too different).

Are you sure you've checked all lines and piping to the IC and vacuum system? Has the vacuum lines been removed and possibly replaced in the wrong spot or similar?

Its more likely to be your afms rob...give them a knock when you have the engine running to see.

If so get them out and repair them...their is a DIY in here somewhere()

Where are you ASH..lol

Have Removed both airflow meters, as of the sensational DIY section on SAU, have fully cleaned out with contact cleaner (pc circuit board use) and re-soldered the connections eh ....

I have no idea if it has vac hoses running where they shouldn't be, i know i havnt touched them, should i be checking for leaks on the Factory BOV piping perhaps?

I know one thing it runs bloody beautiful and then you will be idling at the light and ...... tears and embarrasment lol

thanks for the help guys, but the idle is really loud and anooyin. like i put my intercooler on however didnt secure it casue my car just got out of an accident and didnt have my front bar ready yet. its a loud grunt and sounds like its chokin, not sure if engine was damaged in accident - though it phsyiccally seems fine but just hope that my bearing etc or somethin internally isnt affected and what sort of signs would this show??

maybe if some of these things you can't fix yourself and it becomes a little serious, it might be worth going to a real mechanic to have it checked out? Before the thing goes bang?... New engine vs taking it to the mechanic..? I know which one i'd be looking at if i couldn't solve it easily.

Have you even checked that there is oil in the engine and that it hasnt all leaked out or something?? If you havent got any coolant in the radiator I'd be checking this as well!

As per Poida's advice, getting a real mechanic to have a look at it would be the smartest option.

  • 8 months later...

have found the best way to check for air leaks (vacuum leaks) is to squirt brakecleaner around any possible leakage areas. If there is a leak the idle will rise slightly. Start with the obvious things like pipework and rubber boots etc, try the split line on the bottom of the plenum chamber, Skylines are known to leak here, also check the intercooler for leaks and all pipework joints.

To adjust the idle speed with the idle speed screw on the back of the plenum chamber you have to disconnect the Fast Idle Control Valve and the Idle Speed Control Valve and also the tps (good practice to check this fisrtly for <0.55 volts at fully closed. You can then set the base idle to around 750 rpm. Re connect everything and the ECU should hold the idle at 800 rpm.

However the most likely cause of your problem is a blow off valve venting to atmosphere. This is because the ECU acceses the amount of air inducted and sets the injector duty cycle accordingly to maintain the correct air/fuel ratio. Once the BOV dumps this air the mixture becomes overly rich until the BOV closes and rpm etc equalise. My R33GTS25t did the same thing. Once I plumbed the BOV vent back to the turbo inlet (AKA stock) it was fine again.

Finally the reason the Super FC doesn't use a map sensor is because Skylines don't have one, they just rely on the Mass Airflow Meter. This is also a common cause of many "Skyline Probs"

    • Hi all,   long time listener, first time caller   i was wondering if anyone can help me identify a transistor on the climate control unit board that decided to fry itself   I've circled it in the attached photo   any help would be appreciated
    • I mean, I got two VASS engineers to refuse to cert my own coilovers stating those very laws. Appendix B makes it pretty clear what it considers 'Variable Suspension' to be. In my lived experience they can't certify something that isn't actually in the list as something that requires certification. In the VASS engineering checklist they have to complete (LS3/NCOP11) and sign on there is nothing there. All the references inside NCOP11 state that if it's variable by the driver that height needs to maintain 100mm while the car is in motion. It states the car is lowered lowering blocks and other types of things are acceptable. Dialling out a shock is about as 'user adjustable' as changing any other suspension component lol. I wanted to have it signed off to dissuade HWP and RWC testers to state the suspension is legal to avoid having this discussion with them. The real problem is that Police and RWC/Pink/Blue slip people will say it needs engineering, and the engineers will state it doesn't need engineering. It is hugely irritating when aforementioned people get all "i know the rules mate feck off" when they don't, and the actual engineers are pleasant as all hell and do know the rules. Cars failing RWC for things that aren't listed in the RWC requirements is another thing here entirely!
    • I don't. I mean, mine's not a GTR, but it is a 32 with a lot of GTR stuff on it. But regardless, I typically buy from local suppliers. Getting stuff from Japan is seldom worth the pain. Buying from RHDJapan usually ends up in the final total of your basket being about double what you thought it would be, after all the bullshit fees and such are added on.
    • The hydrocarbon component of E10 can be shittier, and is in fact, shittier, than that used in normal 91RON fuel. That's because the octane boost provided by the ethanol allows them to use stuff that doesn't make the grade without the help. The 1c/L saving typically available on E10 is going to be massively overridden by the increased consumption caused by the ethanol and the crappier HC (ie the HCs will be less dense, meaning that there will definitely be less energy per unit volume than for more dense HCs). That is one of the reasons why P98 will return better fuel consumption than 91 does, even with the ignition timing completely fixed. There is more energy per unit volume because the HCs used in 98 are higher density than in the lawnmower fuel.
    • No, I'd suggest that that is the checklist for pneumatic/hydraulic adjustable systems. I would say, based on my years of reading and complying with Australian Standards and similar regulations, that the narrow interpretation of Clause 3.2 b would be the preferred/expected/intended one, by the author, and those using the standard. Wishful thinking need not apply.
