Hi guys i saw the introduction thread up the top but since i have a few questions to ask i thought i might make a new thread

Hi guys my names Chris and i bought an R33GTST a couple of months ago

Heres a pic of my car :)

post-37002-1175506280.jpg

I bought it fairly stock it just had a catback exhaust and the exterior mods and have since added a apexi pod and a boost controller (pnuematic type) which brings me to my first question

I have set the boost to run 10psi and since boosting particularly in 2nd gear when i hit about 4,500 rpm the car seems as if it looses a bit of power for a sec, and then goes ok until about 6,000 rpm and which point it does it again, i am fairly new to turbo'd cars but it doesn't seem like a fuel cut because it doesn't seem that severe but is there different severities of fuel cuts or has anyone had a similar problem?

and my second question is when i turn my car off my motor makes a ticking sound and it seems to be coming from the turbo, does this mean its on the way out?

i wasn't sure whether to put these questions in a new thread or not so please advise me for next time :)

look forward to meeting you all and thanks for any help on the above questions :)

Chris

i will post a link to my dyno sheet and what happened when i boosted it up to 10psi

look at the black line especially

http://members.optusnet.com.au/conp83/dyno1.jpg

that might explain why u feel the power dip (i fixed this using a fuel cut defender however there are better options if you have the cash)

also the ticking may just be the metals of the motor/turbo cooling down

hey

i had the exact same problem when i bought my 32. It had a cat back exhaust and pod.

when i installed the turbotech manual boost controller it started to hesitate

in 2nd between 4000 and 6000.

if your spark plugs are old replace them with standard NGK ones (BCPR7ES-1.1)

and gap them to .8mm that just could be your problem.

aslo while your at it check your coilpacks for any hairline cracks.

Edited by RB32

gap plugs, check coilpacks, ticking noise is cooling when engine is off, that stuttering is missfiring if youve just decided to up the boost, you'll also find that itll only be at 5psi until u push over ~4000revs and then ull feel ur 10psi kick in (stock feature).

welcome to the forums mate!

you definitely have a nice looking r33

hey guys

do you reckon could it also be r&r at that boost level? seems to sound like its either missfiring or rich and retard.

but yeah as Pauly33GTS-t has said, do the usual checks,

gap size (gap them down), coil packs etc..

I may be wrong but i think the ticking noise you say is the heatshield on the turbo and dump pipe cooling down. (metal...heating up and then cooling down= ticking noise)

if you have any further questions dont hesistant in asking, i am sure that someone within the sau community will have an answer for you.

goodluck mate

CHEERS!

Hi,

I've just bought a Skyline recently too. This may be a silly question for you, but as you are new to turbo's it may be relevant. In regards to the ticking from the turbo, do you have a turbo timer? If not are you letting it cool down after giving it a bit?

It's pretty important to let the turbo cool down a bit before switching it off...just in case you weren't aware

Ben

Chris

Thanks for the replies guys!

Pauly - i have disconnected the stock boost solinoid so i was under the impression that by d/cing that it will run a constant boost level?

Benisdamenice - yeah i have a turbo timer to allow the engine to cool down

I've been told that the ticking is just the manifold cooling down so no dramas there so im under the impression that i need to wind the boost back down until i get some new spark plugs and/or supporting mods.

Is the fact that its running R&R dangerous toward the engine?

thanks for all the input

R&R is the ecu's safety mechanism for the engine. dont think its dangerous towards the engine, its just the dreaded flat spots and loss of power.

cheers!

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
