I have a 1996 R33 Series 2 GTS-T with fmic, full exhast, k&n pod, turbosmart bov, manual boost controller approx 10psi, also run on 98 octane which was running great until I got in it tonight and revved it to 1grand before releasing my clutch as normal and my car immediately started pinging loudly. It sounds like two metal objects banging together and doesn't stop until idling.

Before I continue, my car does suffers from a minor stalling issue where the car drops rev's dramatically when I put my clutch in and either dies or bounces back off 0rpm.... (this is only approx once a week, not a very frequent occurrence, I drive my car approx 75kms a day). My car also has a very low idle approx 600rpm.

I have already put octane booster in the fuel in case I had accidentally put in regular fuel however this did not make a difference.

I have left my car for 5 hours in a garage (so not exposed to the rain as I has been raining all day) thinking that possibly the pod or anything had gotten wet and caused it??? Hoping the best I start my car up and it immediately started pinning just above idle.

That is the story so far, it has had some changes (noises are different and responding differently) but I need someone please who lives south of the river (or north of the river if you don't mind driving) to please come and have a look at it and hear it. I live in Beeliar and most definitely would appreciate it if someone could diagnose the problem without me having to take it to a mechanic!!!!

Please help me I am really stumped!!!!

How loud is the pinging? Does it rise with the revs? Is there smoke out the exhaust (if so what colour)?

It could actually be metal on metal if you've done something major. If you leave the car in neutral or have the clutch in and rev it does it still make the noise?

Is there anywhere under the bonnet that its coming from?

I'm guessing it sounds like it's coming from the engine, but could it be the clutch? It's part of the problems you describe.

Its most definitely coming from the engine.

No smoke coming out of the exhaust.

Its not the oil

It does rise with the revs

It was really bad last night, still there today but not as bad, appears main banging noise is only slightly still there however there are still a lot of unusual sounds coming from my engine.

I'm thinking it might be sensors playing up as it is so random and has come out of no where???

It makes the noise in neutral and when driving, higher revs faster the 'noise' becomes.

I don't think its pinging anymore, however still sounds very rattly and like I said its making lots of usual noises and the exhaust now has a deeper 'grunt' / 'note' to it which wasn't there before.

I really can't explain much more then that as its too difficult to explain.

Really need someone to come have a look at it!

maby take it somewhere so someone can have a look at it?

I can't drive it, well i can, it starts fine, it drives fine but you can hear it.....

I think I will just have to take it somewhere.... I'm really worried I'm going to do it more damage by driving it though, I jumped in it a minute ago to take it on a short drive cos its running better today then it was yesterday and driving up the street I could hear it coming from the engine but my partner could also hear it coming from the exhaust....... does that cut down the ideas of what could be causing it???

In neutral its barely making a noise anymore, it still is making a noise but no where near as bad as last night or this morning, but the second I put it in gear becomes loud, through first its not too bad, the second I put it in second or third its way too loud and I think this is it still pinging?????

Really have no idea!!!!!!!!!!!

Any ides would be really appreciated as I can do lots of different tests here before I resort on taking it to a mechanic!!!

I've already got a AFC Neo and I'm waiting to book it in to get it tuned at 12psi but its not safe to do this until the car is no longer making this noise?!

I think it's no longer pinging.... I believe the noise I can now here is something else coming from the engine. I am thinking whatever had caused my car to ping was water in the engine or petrol tank?!

There is still a very violent noise coming from my engine and when driving my vehicle you can hear the noise coming out of the exhaust as well????

I am going to put meth in my petrol tank tonight to absorb any water that could possibly be in my petrol tank... I am also going to clean my injectors....

My car drives fine, my car starts fine, everything else sounds normal its just this one noise!!!!!!!!! (I believe I might have been driving my car for a couple of days whilst it was making this noise at the start of last week! It hasn't made any damage yet but just to be sure I will get a mechanic to have a look over once I have solved this!)

I am determined to solve this problem before resorting to taking it to a mechanic! I'm being quite stubborn!!

Might be worth considering that a coil pack has come off or something and you are missing on a cylinder. Try jiggling making sure that all tje cable you can get ure hands on are nice and secure. Apart from that id go for the obvious "something is seriously broken" option but if you say you werent caining when/recently before it happened its not as likely.

Found out what the problem is............ Need to replace my exhaust manifold gasket.... don't ask me how it was causing all of those problems especially the pinging but thats the only thing wrong with my car!!!!!

Thanks for everyone's help!!!!!

P.S Now I have to buy one, where do I buy a manifold gasket from???

Should nt be hard to get one from your local repco/supercheap as long as you have stock exhaust flange. If not you could always get some gasket gunge and some gasket paper/mesh and cut it to fit.

Yeah we shall be finding out tonight on whether its the 'only' problem with my car but how the guy explained it, it made sense!

Can't wait to have her running properly again!

genuine nissan part so at least I know its the real deal!!!

Cheers guys!!!!!!

    • Initially I thought having a pair of Recaro seats would be a big bonus, it turns out these do get a little uncomfortable on long journeys (my fault, not the seat). I had a look through the GSM Performance website at reclining seats and booked an appointment to visit their show room. I got the Recaro Sportster CS for the R34 from here, was very happy with the service received so of course a re-visit was in order. Unfortunately the two Corbeau seats I had chosen aren't on display but they had 4 other options available. Two seats dug into my back, one dug into my legs and the other was perfect. I also found out that Recaro seats use a larger bolt pattern so some adaption was required. Luckily GSM offer some universal adaptors that should solve this problem. I searched the interwebs for price comparisons and Corbeau themselves were the cheapest at £300 cheaper (for the pair). I asked GSM if they could price match, unfortunately they couldn't. I later received an email saying Corbeau would honour them the same discount, but the purchase was already made. I did however order the brackets from GSM, both arrived on the same day. I started with the passenger side seat, knowing this was going to be a little trial and error. There are 3 mounting holes at the front and 2 at the rear on these JURAN Racing seat rails.  With the adaptor brackets mounted, the allen cap bolts started to push into the seat, NOT GOOD!  The rear mounting holes lined up but there were issues at the front. The holes were 1/2 hole out, so the brackets got a tickle with the drill to modify the holes. The supplied bolts weren't going to be long enough and a spacer was needed to stop the adaptor bars from bending. A local fasteners company supplied be with some nylon spacers and longer bolts (M8x30, although these will be replaced with 35mm long shortly) A before and after I pre-drilled the front bracket before making a start on the driver's seat to save some time. And in no time at all that was in the car too. The all black seats have transformed the interior and these are MUCH more comfortable. The only downside with the new Corbeau seats is I sit a little higher, but I'll happily accept that over discomfort. The Youtube video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPyttKPktXA
    • All 3 I guess. The car came with the JASI Aero 4 door Type R Full Kit unpainted so this was one thing at the top of my list to complete then I noticed there were body panels parts for this kit so i picked them up along with some black mesh to fill in the front bumper and front side air vents. car is at a paint and body shop atm completing this work. Next I will be addressing the internal bells and whistles, great summer project I can do with the kids.  full interior removal - ,boys car sound deadening - pads and spray ,boys stereo, sound, lighting - Big 3, GTT or bigger alternator ,kids head lining - dye black add star lighting mod ,daughter. That's it for the next 5-6 months. I have some motor maintenance  work i have to plan out. oil filter relocation, gaskets, mounts. beyond that, mind is starting to turn over if i can use a DET intake plenum, block off turbo ports & pipe in a air intake.
    • roller coaster of a ride. Alarm system was removed & main harness was repaired where possible. still no fix just random successful starts. moved on to the replacing the ignition switch and relay. well all this troubleshooting & repair has been going on, the car is at a paint and body shop being pushed around. Ive been going down there on odd days after work to get it sorted.
