Last week i took my non turbo r33 skyline to a mechanics shop to get the timing belt changed, spark plugs ,fuel injectors the lot done.

i handed the car over on wednesday and the mechanic said it would be ready by thursday,come thursday not ready..

i go in on friday and theyd done all the work, but the pistons wer not turning properly so i had to leave it over the weekend.

and so today i whent back and the engine is fkd! one of the pistons hit 'somthing' and i need to get a new motor!

basicaly i need advice from anyone who has a clue, the mechanic claims that this happens alot to no.4 and 6 cylinders in skylines, i smell bullshit but i cant argue, i drove it in there no worries and now its rooted, they claim to have checked it all before starting it and then when they started it there was a massive clonk sound , its too much of a coinsidence that it fkd up there and then....

so does anyone know if that actualy is a problem with skylines,or is it the fact that the timing belt wasnt installed properly or what?

so any help from anyone would be very muchly appreaciated!

i wouldnt be able to give you extremely technical advice on this, but i reckon that is complete shite...

you may be on the ball assuming they havent installed something correctly and have caused the problem, but proving it is another thing hey. Maybe have it towed to another mechanic who works on imports quite regularly.

hey glog sorry that had to happen to u

i showed a mate of mine and he loves his cars, he says the mechanic didn't instal the timing belt correctly and the piston hit the valve. hes pretty sure thats wats happened judging by what he has read.

sorry to hear that this has happened to you mate....from what i can read about it i think its the mechanics fault....i only take my car to trusted import workshops/garages.....where my mates have gone before and a place where they also have a very good repp

worst case seek legal advice. im pretty sure you got something to go on. car was fine before service now its dead. maybe get a report from a reputable workshop that can diagnose the problem that it could only have happened due to the work done on it...ie timing belt not installed properly for the 100k service you paid for.

good luck on getting it fixed. hopefully they're decent enough to admit fault and fix your car.

Try to take your car out of there if pos. Thake it to a workshop you can trust , get them to take the cyl head off and give you a report as to why it happened . Armed with that go to fair trading and see if you can get them to pay for the damage .

At a guess I would say they mistimed the belt and when they tried to start it a piston or 2 hit the valves and bent them .

It's not rocket science, all you have to do is line the cam gears with the marks and at the same time the crank gear with its mark as well.

sounds likie the mechanic did a quick job and didn't line up the cam gears properly... everything needs to be turning at the right time or shit crunches into each other.... that's why the cam gears have markings on them.

the pistons are all the right length etc, and dont just "hit" things without being in the wrong place at the wrong time... that's why they call it a TIMING belt... its made specifically to TIME the pistons!

dont let them near it or at very least be there when the cover is taken off and take a photo, if they marked the belt in any way, which is common, you will be able to see if things dont match up. even if you cant tell a qualified mechanic will be able to tell you

i feel your pain, my 33 was hurt from a similar prob... mechanic crossthreaded the tensioner pulley for the cam belt and it broke under load, luckily the belt stayed on! still ran me $882 though!

    • Will have a look at that. I cant see any leaks 
    • Put another overflow bottle (ie, a 1.25 coke bottle or similar) under the overflow hose and see if it is being pushed out there or if it is disappearing into the engine.
    • Staring on a stand is no issue. You just have to wire everything up, give it fuel and cross your fingers that the stand is robust enough. Arranging the inlet plumbing is often the hardest part, without any surrounding structure to hand some of it from. No need for coolant if you only want to run it for <1 minute. As to the gearbox - I think the little Aisin box is a bit stronger than the other small Nissan boxes that went behind SRs, but I wouldn't be too keen to test its limits with the torque of a boosted 25. I don't know if you can retain the box and the tailshaft. The box won't connect to the RB without an adapter of some sort, which is either a plate that will push the engine forward (which is not good for fitting it into the bay's available space) or push the box back, which messes with the box position and tailshaft length - OR - cut and shut work on the bellhousing, which is a long way from "least modification". I'd be buying a new 370Z 6 speed or similar, doing what has to be done to that to make it fit RB (ie, cut and shut bellhousing) and the requisite tailshaft custom/mods.
    • Hi Everyone I am from West Pennant Hills in NSW. Been too busy until recently to attend to my RB25DET Series 2 engine until recently. I am planning to stick it into the S15 shell at this stage, unless a nice SR20DET turns up... For now, i am going to try and get the RB25 running and working well then decide what gearbox to use. My preference is to retain the SR20DET  6 speed gearbox and tail shaft to retain as much and least modifications as i can avoid. I am an old guy and won't be doing any heavy drifting so i don't need a bullet proof gearbox Does anyone have experience with starting the RB on a stand? I got everything setup as much as I can with the info i can find... endless searching and videos on Youtube I would be great to get some pointers Cheers Songo
    • Hey all, Recently have had my s1 r33 gtr serviced and noticed my coolant reservoir was topped up to the max line. Took the car out for 1 yesterday and noticed today the reservoir is completely empty.  Any ideas? Radiator is full
