In light of recent thefts of number plates, and the ever increasing risk of speeding tickets, you guys might be interested in these (if you have not already seen them)...

Another site claims their plates can't be flash-photographed...

Good point about the first one is that when you park your car, ppl can't see your plates. Also at the flick of a switch neither can a camera... If you want to take photo's of your car, easy to switch off your plates, so lowers risk of identification and theft...

nutz!! i but at ~$600 its a bit steep.. i was always after something like that..

Thing is - like radar detectors, these will very quickly be banned and massive fines attached if they catch on. The govnermnet don't wanna lose all that millions and millions of dollars it gets each year and the whole massive program it has going. Cops these days are glorified tax collectors, nothing more.

Apparently the only reason the VIC budget is currently in surplus is due to revenue raising through traffic infringements. If this is the way the government has to keep the state's economy going well **** them.

hmmm... i just thought of something?? polarising film .. not gonna cost you $600..

but still, if the camera can't see it, neither can a nearby cop - and that means he's gonna dick you for it.. obscuring a number plate was funily enough, increased to loss of 3 points and (i think) $165 fine recently - where once it was just a monetary fine.

Yep... thought about polarising film... The point of this is that you can leave it switched on while driving (just flick it under bridges etc.) and as long as cops aren't tailing you (and if they were you wouldn't be speeding), you'll be safe.

Also, if you take your rego sticker off (temporarily) as well, you can park illegally and you can't be booked...

I was unaware that they made it a 3 pt offence to have your plate obscured thoguh... Cvnts... I guess it's only if you get caught though...

guys... half the camera's that are in use in melbourne metro and sydney metro now use the laser assisted cameras. No more polarising film and fly spray tricks. If you don't get a speeding ticket then you've probably just been hit by one of those old ones.

Laser assisted cameras basically shoots out laser rays instead of light, and as laser lights are polarised (is that the term, well they don't vary in frequency) the chances of them being scattered are well... 1 in half the surface area of a sphere... plus parralel rays will not negate or interfere with other rays (unlike white light which goes in all directions).

They trialled one on Carlingford road in Epping/Carlingford, Sydney and as a result on the first day of operation they caught about 40 people. Most of them speeding in groups. Oh yeah, being lasers they operate at higher frequencies as well, meaning they can take the pics quicker.

Technology is catching up...

Also since this thread is balancing on the fine line of legality (and we don't condone illegal behaviour)... keep it legal and it won't dissapear.

Guys can someone explain to me how speed cameras work. Just say in a multi lane road two cars are travelling. Car A is travelling legal limit and car B travelling 10kph over legal limit. Car A and B pass the camera at the same time. How does the camera know which car to book. If someone can explain this to me I would be so grateful. Not sure how these things work.

    • They are under bucket shims. Tomei provides a test shim kit and then any measurement of shim required.
    • I always wondered how you were supposed to buy a set of 24 buckets and somehow magically have every single one of them yield exactly the desired clearance. I would have thought you'd need to assemble a cam with either 12 "sample" or "example" buckets of known top thickness (or a single such sample/example 12 times over!!) measure clearances at every valve, and then do the usual math to work out what the actual "shimness" of each bucket needed to be, before buying the required buckets to make up he thicknesses that you didn't have on hand.
    • I now seem to be limited in power due to my rev limit/hydraulic lifters in my built RB25. I'm looking into converting over to Tomei solid lifters. Question for anyone that has done the conversion. I was always under the impression that when using the Tomei solid lifter conversion, you would also require new valves (Longer or shorter stems, I can't remember which).  I don't know where I got this idea, as so far I see no mention of this in any of the Tomei documentation. It just states I need the Tomei solid buckets, solid lifter cams and upgraded springs. As my head is already built, all I would need is another set of 1000$ Kelford cams, 500$ buckets and about 4H hours of my time installing and I'm off to the races!?!? There's no way it's that simple, I must be missing something?
