Just checking if anyone has ever hit their speed limiter in an R33, and what it's like (harsh or gentle). I have been track racing and been getting very close to the 180km/h and wondering how it feels when it kicks in.

And yeah, I know how to disconnect it, just wondering if it's worth doing.

Thanks

D

there is a wire which u can cut apparently or put a switch in its place. I dont think its worth it unless u are gettin to top speed where u can go more. I just reach under 180 at ippy raceway i dont think ill reach much more but it might be worth doing :P if u want to go fast lol

if you can find a wiring diagram of the computer, its wire number 53!!

The speed limiter is soft, and it appears more closer to 195kph on the speedo. The stock speedo is way out when going that fast.

I have checked it against my RSM.

A switch is the way to go, but not essential. I have had mine up to 240kph so far now...... open road

i've hit my speed limiter before. the car just suddenly nose dives due to the lack of acceleration, but once it drops below 180, it picks up again, and keeps doing this. when i hit it, i just back right off...doesn't feel as harsh as rev limiter, but maybe cos rev limiter's hit in the lower gears.

no such problems now with the power fc

I suppose that disconnecting it would be cool but given the recent news over the haul by police on hooning and the results they have had over the long weekend, in the interests of keeping your car etc. is it possible to disable it for racing and then put it back on for street driving. It appears that cutting a wire seems permanent and was wondering if there is a way of having it so that it can be turned on and off.....anyone know if this is possible?

I can't see the point of having a switch for street and track... No matter where you are (except NT) whether you're doing 175kph or 185kph, you're still doing a bit over the limit :D... It's not like your speed can sneak up on you that high :-)

I have no speed limiter (and the wire 53 isn't cut - interesting, eh...)...

As CMS Drifter said, just install a switch... Dick smith stock them, and they're pretty easy to fit :-)

Its not soo much in relation to how fast the speed catches up with you...rather if you modify your car (eg. take the speed limiter off) and are involved in an accident, even if you pay insurance the insurer may refuse to cover you. This may depend on whether you inform your insurer of the modifications made to the mechanics of the car..which im guessing they would need to / or should know about given how anal they are about items fixed to your car.

Furthermore charges could be applied should you be deemed to have modified the car to an extent that it is unroadworthy and hence driving an unroadworthy and unregistered vehicle which is an offence.

Nevertheless, each to their own....was just something of interest sake i guess more than anything.

yes, your accelerating and all of a sudden you feel the engine stop reving and it feels like you slipped in the clutch it isnt rough or anything, and when you take you foot off the accelerator and the speed srops again you put your foot back on the pedal and it accelerates again :P

"i seriously doubt that any insurance company would go to that extent to prove that it was unroad worthy"

Be careful of that one mate....if an insurance company wants to get out of paying on a claim they will.....seen it often...i work in personal injury (mva etc) and they are harsh. Once the insurer was finished with you....then come the cops...who knows...

Just food for thought really. Just dont want people paying hundreds and hundreds of dollars in insurance and then find that they have made alterations which makes the policy invalid. I guess its best to let them know and find out now if your covered with the "slight" changes rather than getting a nasty shock when you make a claim after a crash.

my car doesnt have a speed limter due to aftermarket ecu... however, if you were to cut the wire the insurance company couldnt not pay out... as it is still road worthy. Prove me wrong and post any ADR's / legislation etc that says a car has to be limited to 180km.

another note is... i wouldnt just cut wire 53. There is a reason why greddy, hks, tomei make speed limit removers... that wire into both wire 53, 59, ground and +..

    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.

    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
