Hi all

im just after some Info on these cars, i am currently thinking about getting another car because i have to offload my R31.

Would this be a good car to drive on ur P's??

And what features can i expect , like HICAS , ABS ??

Yeah dude, fantastic car. Nothing too flash just a great RWD, turbo Coupe with plenty of tuning ability and a fair bit of street cred.

Get one with a sunroof - honestly the best feature of my car

They come fully loaded with power windows/mirrors, rear wiper, climate control air-con. The majority come with aftermarket filter, possibly Momo steering wheel and knob like mine did and often a big bore exhaust. Try and get one with full bodykit aswell.

Brakes are good but no ABS. HICAS is std issue but is not a reason to buy the car - if anything it makes the car worse.

Expect moderate-heavy fuel consumption i find 350km to a tank max.

Resale value seems a tad stronger than equivalent R33 but both are good.

Here's my Previous cars that I have owned:

TE 250ci 4 Speed Cortina - Great Car Tough fairly quick excellent burnouts but I repaired the Manual Gearbox 6 times. Selector Forks kept snapping and once I had the bearings go.

Owned 2 years. Fuel Consumption 350kays to 50 litres.

VL 3ltr NA 5 Speed Commodore - Gearbox's syncro's were chewed. Slapped a bit of Nulon G70 to smooth things out and sold it. Excellent car not 1 breakage in 9 months of ownership.

Owned 9 months - Fuel consumption 400kays to 50 litres.

VS V8 5ltr 5 Speed IRS SRS ABS, 3.5" exhaust adj. bilstein shocks lowered superlow HD sway bars. Piece of crap car. Rattled and only had 60,000kays on the clock. Broke the rear crossmembed where the diff bolts on. A Clean crack all around the chassis from one of the diff bolts causing the arse end to sit on the groud with around 45degree's negative camber = Tow home. Next was the diff.. Started grinding and felt like a locker. (not one burnout on it either only take off wheel spin) next was the gearbox.. started poping out of gears and bearings were extremly rattly = gearbox rebuild.. I then sold the car.

Owned 9 months - Fuel consumption 430kays to 60-65 litres.

R32 GTS-T Owned close to 2 years now and not one single problem that cost me $$. General maintence shiet like cam belt waterpump at 100,00kays radiator clean etc.. Apart from that the car is extremly tough.. Since I have owned the car It has just kept going and going. I've been running 15-16psi in it for the last year to year and a half. Lots of flat changes in to second that send you wheel spinning all the way through second with 225 50' 16" tyres. A few burnouts.. First quickly click second as you take your foot off the brake and fill the street with smoke.. :)

Owned ~2 years - Fuel consumption 470kays then it hits the red light for approx 50 litres. - City driving no open road driving.

I do seem to get better fuel consumption that others. Not sure why I drive it damn hard and on 15psi. It does have a sort of clear looking top injector with a red dot on it ?!?!?

The R32 GTS-T Is supposed to get 10.5Litres per 100kays which is about what I am getting. If you are in the 300-350kays then some thing is slightly wrong or not quite right. Check your o2 Sensor.. A new one is around 280 bucks. Ouch.

Very tough car though.. Almost unbreakable I am extremly happy with it.

When buying one pull the rear quarter covers on in the boot and stick your hand inside the rear quarter.. If you find dirt water etc.. You know it has most probably had a prang and or the boot or rear window is some how leaking.

Check underneath the car and look at the chassis. make sure it isn't flattened out or gone skidding over rocks due to drifts.

When you open the door check where to sil panel joins with the rear quarter and make sure there is no rust developing. If there is the chances are it has had an arse ender and had a bad repair.

Check the usual door gaps boot gaps light gaps and bumper gaps are all even

Also check the car in all angles with the sun on it, do a u turn and check the other side. It will show up any bodgy paint fix ups..

Better not to have any suprises otherwise you will get it home wash it and spot it.. Then you will be unhappy.. and your throat will sink. :) That happened to the rear quarter in my VS.. Some one repainted it and used to much metalic.. :( Looks bad in the light well I could see it. All the gaps were fine however.

my gts-t has ABS

ive found the chassis, and drivetrain to be great. lovely car to drive. my experience with the RB20 has been one of a rollercoaster ride, however ive heard the majority of them are bulletproof.

i get around 400k's to a tank, all in all a great little car however can't carry people in the back and all the 32's ive been in have had their own 'quirks' as theyre becoming a fairly old car now

there have been a few, but yeh running lean was one of them :P

dont let my experiences put you off though, it seems to be a freak case!

they also come with HICAS, but youre probably best off removing it as it isnt the best system. the brakes that come standard from nissan are also very good, as an all-round car it is very good

Great car! Most of the points have been covered, but theres a couple id like to add:

Sunroof's - Make sure its a factory one and make sure theres no rust bubbling up around it, or you'll be forever repainting the roof.

Gearboxes - the RB20 has a rep for having a weakish gearbox. Unfortunately id have to agree, mine clunks, whines, whirrs and squeals its way through all 5 gears... but its still going and it never pops out of gear so i guess it cant be THAT bad! :)

Climate control - These also have a rep for having dodgy LCD screens, everything works when you press the buttons but the screen just shows gibberish. I know a guy who went through 5 climate control units in his GTR trying to find one with a working screen.

Ive had no problems with mine apart from those which have been my own stupid fault (eg: running too much boost and burning 2 valves).

Compared to my old VS V8 Manual commodore that also had IRS the Skyline feels easier to handle in the wet.

The commodore even in the dry use to flick out really quick and was hard to hold in a smooth slide where as the skyline seems to go out a little slower and loves to be held in a slide. Especially in the dry when stepping on the brake through first jump off the brake and slap second pulling out of a corner. :)

They still can snap out very quickly given the right conditions.

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.      
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
