hey guys

Just wondering if anyone can give me advice on this problem i have.

I have a r33 s2 gtst with 3.5 exhaust, fmic, hks stainless steel pod, stock boost, 60 000km on the clock

The car ran beautifully and 2 days ago i installed a box for the pod filter.

Car still ran fine after this install

Then this afternoon i gave the car a few good runs and it started to make popping noise from the exhaust.

This happens under hard acceleration and only in the rev ranges of 4000 to 5500.

I have read many posts on this problem but i still have a few questions.

1. has anyone else had this problem runing stock boost?

2. do you think that because the filter is getting cooler air now that its causing the problem?

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Simon

shouldnt be because of making the airbox, all that would do is increase efficentcy a.k.a cooler air better combustion.....

u may be getting a little boost spike due to the cold air but it shouldnt be much on stock boost, hence u can rule out boost cut....

make sure u havent damaged the afm or the plug/lead around the area

thanks dude

i`ll check the plug and afm as well, great care was taken when removing it but will double check

one thing i did notice about the afm was that the resistor wire looked like it had a bit of gunk on it,

do you thing i should hit it with the carby cleaner?

Cheers Simon

i have the same problem aswell!! its been driving me crazy the past few weeks,

i have put new sprak plugs in n it done nothing, i even put a tank of v-power in a bottle of octane boost in to try n see if it was cause of low octane but still does it..

im just about to go out n buy a set of coils cause i cant think of anything else to change or check

any1 have any other help?? im sure other ppl have this same problem aswell

i can see that theres a few of us on the same boat.

Hey Buddy, did you regap your spark plugs at 0.8mm before putting them in?

and what type sparkies did you use?

R33 S2, let us know if the new coils cures it.

I was also looking at a set of splitfire coil packs from hi octane racing for 600, is this price reasonable?

Cheers Simon

Its coils.. I fixed it with a power fc and plugs gapped to 0.6. New coils coming soon.

the air box issue doesn't surprise me as i run one and had it BAD! It was always worse in the colder night time temperatures.

i can see that theres a few of us on the same boat.

ill let ya know how i go!

hey guys

pulled out my plugs today.

the car had a set of hks plugs through it and the tips of the electrode are still pointy and shinny.

had a quick look at the coils and they look pretty good on first inspection.

will have a proper look at the coils tomorrow in the day light.

Also going to put a set of new plugs gapped at 0.8 or 0.9 tomorrow.

So i`ll get the plugs in and re install everthing tomorrow night and hopefully it should run sweat.

If not then a set of new coils are on the table.

Cheers Simon.

    • Not sure the US can import anything other than the C34 Stagea's, but if you can and you need to to tow, DO NOT under any circumstances get an M35 Stagea. If it is just as a family car and your country/state allows it, absolutely and definitely get an M35 (3.5L if possible as it is effectively a 350Z) over a C34.
    • Punch your VIN (nm35-xxxxxx) into Amayama.com You can see everything there quite easily.
    • Thanks for that, I'll check it all out. I can always do the brakes last anyway if its a problem.  The 16's are super cool, if they do fit I'll cruise around with them for a bit.
    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.
    • OK, so again it has been a bit of a break but it was around researching what had been done since I didn't have access to Neil's records and not everything is obvious without pulling stuff apart. Happily the guy who assembled the engine had kept reasonable records, so we now know the final spec is: Bottom end: Standard block and crank Ross 86.5mm forgies, 9:1 compression Spool forged rods Standard main bolts Oil pump Spool billet gears in standard housing Aeroflow extended and baffled sump Head Freshly rebuilt standard head with new 80lb valve springs Mild porting/port match Head oil feed restrictor VCT disabled Tighe 805C reground cams (255 duration, 8.93 lift)  Adjustable cam gears on inlet/exhaust Standard head bolts, gasket not confirmed but assumed MLS External 555cc Nismo injectors Z32 AFM Bosch 023 Intank fuel pump Garret 2871 (factory housings and manifold) Hypertune FFP plenum with standard throttle   Time to book in a trip to Unigroup
