Hi guys

Recently bought a MY97 RS Four V from J-Spec imports, Their service has been outstanding thus far. :pirate:

$10,800 landed and complied, the car is still sitting in Japan at this point but it should be getting put on a big boat soon enough.

The consultant sent me an email asking if i'd seen the 'small' oil leak coming from the gearbox...

My question is this: What are all the possble leak points on the gearbox apart from the front and rear seals and the drain plug? They think it may not get past Compliance/rego with it leaking so i'd like to get it cleared up before taking it to the compliance place.

Apart from that i'm chuffed with the purchase.

Thanks in advance for gearbox answers. :)

yeah I really need to get under the stagea and give it a good degrease.

I am not sure if the slight bit of oil I saw under there was gearbox oil or ( as I have found ) when you change the oil filter some oil drips down to near the crossmember under the car.. so .. who knows. the weather over here is not really lending itself towards working on cars.

Oh for a massive shed

Thanks guys

Something tells me it'll be a job to do before compliance, hoping it's only a small job where I can cart some tools, a jack and ramps down to Sydney to do it.

If not: Degrease and hope it doesn't leak too much! :pirate:

Well, to me it looks like the attessa actuator, which is part of the transfer case, not the gearbox. I am not 100% positive, but I think there may be an o-ring that seals the piston body to the housing. You can buy o-ring kits to make your own (I dunno how you would go buying a drop in replacement) or it could be the fluid supply to the actuator. Either way, you need to know that the attessa system is probably the most expensive part of a stagea to fix so you really don't want to muck around here. If I was you, I would make sure they check the fluid level before it leaves Japan and again as soon as it hits the docks here because the fastest way to fu(k up an attessa system is to drive the car without fluid. It will destroy the clutch packs in the transfer case before you can say "whats that funny burning smell"

Other than that, bloody nice buy for the price, and as someone who really doesn't like body kits as a rule, that front bar is HAWT!!

depending on the who the compliance workshop is they may fix it for you on request of if required for compliance. They will charge you nicely for it but it may save you a lot of stress and pain! Worth asking them up front I would say.

Very nice machine by the way!

Cheers

Luke

looks fantastic ian :)

like Stinky Rooster said, looks like the attessa actuator.. doesn’t j-spec offer a service to get stuff like that fixed before its shipped? or at least a full mechanical inspection so you can narrow it down?

Yeah J-Spec offer an inspection but i'm not sure about getting it fixed over there...

Can some please elaborate on what would be the solution to fixing it? is it just a seal or do I have to replace a hose or worse?

I tried....:)

Seriously, the actuator SHOULD be sealed with a o-ring around the outside of the body, just drop the 2 bolts you can see out, pull the actuator back, replace the o-ring, slap on a light smear of rubber grease (this bit is crutial if you don't want to f**k the o-ring getting it back in) and bolt it back up, making sure you keep equal torque on the bolt heads. If it is the hose that is leaking, you will have to take the whole hose off (its a compression fitting) which means the end you can see in the pic, and the other end which is up inside the right rear quater panel on the bottom of the resivior (I think, don't quote me on that) and take it to a hose specialist who will make a new end for it. It is only a quick 5 min job for someone with all the right gear. DO NOT try and use thread sealant or anything like that, it won't work, will make a mess and you run the risk of blowing the whole hose off.

If you want to get a second opinion, send a PM to Brad (overpowered) because I know he has had all this off his car and he knows a shitload more about it than I do.

O-ring or hose...I think i'll do both just to be sure but once i've determined what it is i'll get onto it straight away

Question: What fluid does the ATTESA use? is it a specialised hydraulic fluid or something you can buy off the shelf?

Edit: Jap inspection has been ruled out as the car is waiting to be loaded onto the next available ship.

Nice lookin stag mate... I actually checked out this one myself, but my missus wouldn't let me spend more than 10k on a new car.... so I bought the Dayz edition they had instead.... Service has been good for me too, except emails are a little slow to get replies to. Now the waiting.............

another new owner!!! I really like the look of that one, a mate of mine was interested but decided to go for a 180... scum i know :laughing-smiley-014:

welcome, yes enjoy the waiting... i know i am ;)

Couldn't handle the extra two cylinders huh? :bunny: hehehe

180's are still a nice car though and very potent little machines. If I didn't have a drum kit and a mountain bike to cart around i'd have one. :D

yeah.. they will more than likely have to come off

the tiens might be a real ball ache.. depending on if they can get stock shocks and springs to put back in

Compliance update:

Turns out the Tiens, Wheels and front bar might not make it past compliance...*shakes fist at DoTaRs*

Does $3000 sound about right for a Compliance fee?

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
