Hey

I just got my car back from X Speed

they are reknown tuners for powerfc and ant scali knows his stuff

The car over all runs pretty good and the knock levels are ALWAYS below 20

Except once last night i got cut off by a car and went past him on gate in 4th gear

it rev'd out to 5600rpm and read a knock of 126?

i was concerned and cleared the hold settings , put it in 3rd and reved it out to 6000rpm and it didnt go above 14 (did the same 4-5 times more that night still the same)

Am i worrying for nothing? because basically its cost me a small fortune to upgrade to the 25 after blowing 2 rb20's in my 32 and i really dont want to blow another engine

its tuned very safe - no timing at 14psi with 11.8 afr and lower with a max power of 312hp

Also is it possible for a rock or something making a noise in the engine bay to cause a knock reading?

Im new to the pfc so any information will be appreciated!

did you hit the limitter?

normally i dont get knock above 20 but when i smash the limiter i sometime see knock values above 70.

If your really not happy take it back, and explain your problem and they should be able to help you out. Should be free of charge too

im happy with everything i just worry because of the money its cost and the previous hassles ive had with everything prior to going to x speed

i just found out its got a bad leak from the mani at the back near 6th cyl which i thought was the dump pipe

could this of had something to do with it?

maybe a flame out the side of the mani which caused a bang? i dont know?

but yeah its not repeatable and hasnt gone into the 20's otherwise

paul if its not a prob check my reply on another thread and post your thoughts!

cheers

Please check my post on your other thread.

However, in brief, I have had exactly the same problem just recently and have good reason to believe it is due to the tune.

I can repeatably induce knock in the 50 to 80 range without hitting rev limiter and have since reduced boost to 0.9 bar until this is sorted.

I seem to need a slightly less aggressive tune than Xspeeds standard tune due to track use and a more aggressive driving style/vehicle usage.

I will say this is probably my own fault for not advising Xspeed that the car is used at AHG for racing purposes.

Also, Ignition was breaking down during the tune due to old plugs and 1.0mm gap even with splitfires.

The tune was not 100% completely finished and needed another hour on the dyno.

Nevertheless, the "random high knock" is real and repeatable and needs to be sorted before any more track use.

yeah i got them to tune it as a safe safe tune and hence they took timing out up top and left everything else standard on the timing side of things

ant said if it had timing put into it aswell as ultimate fuel (tuned on vortex) it would make 350 easily on 1 bar

im not after max power

all i want is reliability with a bit of poke

so far im very happy with everything , im just cautious because of the money and stress the car has caused me

the main reason i chose a pfc is because of the knock sensor reading and when i seen a high reading i worry

i just want to enjoy it and drive it from now on without the stress!

Leadfoot am having fairly similar problems with my tune knock to about 80ish right as she gets up on boost, have missed track days trying to sort it damn frustrating

Just wondering if you dropped to a lower heat range plug when you put the splitfires as they reccomend, I didnt.

Also curious if you had tried the settings recommended here

true

well nah i dont know what it was on but im pretty sure it was when i said

and its never happened since then but yeah i rang xspeed and ant said theres no way it would of been a legit ping coz of the way he tuned it

he said it could of been a rock flinging up or the gasket but definately not the tune

otherwise it hasnt gone over 12-14 since that night

and boost definately isnt spiking either!@

like Cerbera said, it also could be caused by loose stuff within the engine bay. my friend has f**ked engine mounts in his old car and once in a full moon when he gave it stick it would read in the low 100's. daily driving never more than 20..so check for loose stuff :)

The tuner told me I need to fix a few things first before going back for a retune. They were getting spark breakdown under high load meaning they could not tune for over 360rwhp at around 1.0bar. Apparently each dyno run was also inconsistent to the previous making it hard to tune.

The breakdown problem was the long life irridium plugs gapped at 1.0 mm. I was advised to go back to copper at 0.8mm. Once the plug electrode carbonises it will breakdown regards of being copper, platinum iridium or whatever. Gapping the iridiums to 0.8mm seems to have fixed the problem however it may now just be partially breaking down and causing knock. At 1.2bar I consistantly get knock up into the 80's.

I also found I had a leaking PCV valve that was bypassing under boost back through the catch can (not measured by the air flow meter) causing it to lean out.

That would have been the cause of the inconsistency. Another possibility is cheap chinese imitation Z32 air flow meters. Proper z32 airflow meters are packed in a yellow bosch box and has bosch written on it. It is also possible that the CAS alignment is out meaning that TDC could be a few degrees more advanced than what the PFC says.

Once I have fixed all these items and pressure tested the intercooler and connecting hoses for leaks I will go back for a retune and see what happens.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
