Hey guys

Ive recently bought myself an R32 Gtst and all was running great wen i bought it.

After having the car for a little over a week, someone idiot decided they were going to try and steal it from my house, they were unsuccessful, but did leave me with alot of damages to pay for.

Since then the car has not been running properly and feels like it loses spark, for instance i might b driving along and all of a sudden the car will miss fire rapidly and lose all of its power, this is not consistant with a certain rev range and does not happen every gear but happens alot. and also has problems idleing

has anyone had any similar problems before and could throw any ideas towards me to wat the problem might b?

the only ideas i have thought of are the ecu has an error or is broken?

and ideas would b greatly appreciated!

I don't understand how someone trying to steal your car is going to give you running problems either, but have you tried changing the spark plugs? Try reseting the ecu also if you think there's something wrong with it. Just disconnect your battery and leave it over night or push on the brake peddle with the battery disconnected.

Bad luck that your car was targeted by thieves.

Sorry i spose i should have added the problems just started like pretty much as soon as the car was stolen and was probably just a coincidence...

ive already tried removing the ecu over night, and i have already changed the spark plugs..

the damages caused wen the car was stolen was, the ignition barrell was ripped out, window smashed and ecu removed and thrown on the back seat...

I think high possiblity of loom damage at the ecu end...as whoever tried to steal ure car were probably pissed off that they could make your car go they probably pulled the ecu out without undoing the bolt in the middle of the plug and has resulted in a bad connection in the loom. just go through all the wires on the ecu plug and check that they are all intact and the the sockets inside the plug are plushed in all the way... did you replace the ignition barrel?? maybe that is cutting the ignition randomly?

ive checked the wires going to the ecu and all seem to be fine...

i also cleaned the AFM which made it run great for half a day and then it went back to running bad but not as bad which i thought was wierd n i couldnt figure out y it would run awesome for a few hours and then start acting up again? so i pulled off the AFM again and checked it all out again and everything was still very clean.

Yeah i replaced the ignition barrell but the wires at the back were un damaged as the backend of the ignition barrell remained untouched...

i think it might b tym to take it s professional... does anyone no of a good mechanic around the sydney area?

all my mates that hav had turbo cars have gone there and all my mates have regretted it, they have had nothing but problems there...

ive herd good things about CV performance in taren point/Caringbah tho? has anyone had any dealings with them?

Well I had thought my car was not running right for some time, and a few mechanics offered possible causes but weren't sure (my issues weren't the same as yours) so I took it to a dyno. The put it on and were doing the pre-checks and then the guy called me over and said "Does this car have a fuel pump?" and I just said its never been changed so it would be the original one... He then said this car is running lean and that it needs a fuel pump replacement! He said not to rev it out till I get it fixed.

I just got a call from my mechanic to say that the fuel pump is in (Bosch 040) and that it is like a different car... He said it feels like it has 30% more power and revs out much cleaner!

I can't wait to pick it up.......!!!!!!!!!!!! :wub:

I had the same issues with my last RB20 and on the rare occasion the new one does it too. The common denominators between my car with the old vs new RB20 is ECU, Turbo, AFM and Bosch 040.

the car is hopefully getting dyno'd and checked out on tuesday through a mates car club for nice and cheap :)

im thinking the problem is most likely AFM, but now thinking it might b the fuel pump cause that would make sense as im pretty sure the original one is still in there... i might have to check that out!!

The fuel pump would have to be pretty bad to give problems at idle.

I've previously had success resoldering the afm but recently my son's 32 started having these problems, which would go away temporarily when he wriggled the afm plug.

I couldn't see any broken solder joints in the afm so I looked at the plug and two of the pin holes seemed a little bigger than the other two, possibly resulting in a poor connection so I pushed the pin hole sides in with a jeweller's screwdriver to ensure a tighter fit on the pins.

This needs to be done carefully as it would be easy to ruin the plug with a heavy hand.

The problem has gone completely for three weeks and counting.

yeh it's got to be AFM related.

if not the AFM, then the plug, if not the plug, then the loom it's connected it.

the engine bay gets pretty hot on a daily basis.

heating, cooling over and over for 15 odd years.

plastics and so on are going to get frail.

make a small change like removing the air box to fit a pod and you have to disconnect the afm, the plug, bend stuff around to remove things...

things can break/split.

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.      
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
