I recently added a manual boost controller on my basically stock R33, its now running 11psi. When i crank it up to 12psi it goes a little harder on boost, at about 3500-4000rpm, but i feel hesitiation from the engine like it misfires or something . It 'feels' like the air/fuel mixture's a tad lean, without actually measuring it.

Anyone know what this is?

I read a thread saying the stock ECU goes nuts past 10psi - do i need a piggyback system/complete computer replacement with a dynotune to fix this???

its the standard ecu protection, youll need a piggyback, ecu change or remap to work around it

do a search for r&r protection or boost cut or fuel cut

anyone of those terms will lead you to the same result that its the stock ecu protection itself from too much airflow

When you raise the boost they start to run rich as a safety precaution.

Its only best to raise boost once you have supporting modifications, but in most cases when you put on a 3" turbo back exhaust, and FMIC you usually get an automatic increase in boost.

I suggest you get a FMIC and a 3" turbo back exhaust on there.

12- 13psi on standard turbo and ECU would probably be about the best it will get. Anything more than that and you will start to eiter get ping/fuel cut outs and all other types of shit on standard ECU.

12 - 13psi

3" turbo back exhaust

FMIC

Fuel pump

That will be fine, then if you want a tune, like an SAFC II which is a fuel only computer or an E-MANAGE. Basically some sort of engine management..

But about 14psi is the max you'd run your stock turbo on, other wise there is a high chance it will blow. :D

can do it on the cheap like i have and get a fuel cut defender, lets you adjust your reading from your afm to fool the ecu, hence no more rich and retard

installed and adjusted on the dyno shouldnt cost you more than $300

The fuel cut def. sounds like a good choice. I'm not sure if i wanna go for it as a long term mod cause it sounds kind of restrictive, in terms of being able to adjust power like a Power FC can (which does cost a helluvalot more :) ).

Should i just wait to get a good ECU tune? Or just go the PCD?

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
