Noise From Engine

Recommended Posts

I was up at Winton raceway yesterday for a track day. the day went well and it was great fun.

However...

since leaving the track ive notice a horrible "ticking" noise coming from the engine, but its only under load. when you are just coasting the noise stops.

im hoping that i dont need to fork out for a rebuild as i really dont have the funds at the moment.

if anyone can shed some light on what the noise could be it would be much appreciated.

thanks guys.

is its a rumble/ knocking noise that generally is bigend/main end bearings which is rebuild time.

ticking can be more head/cam/lifters which isnt really a problem, noisely lifters wont cause damage

its hard to help just with you saying you hear ticking, after all it could be anything even noisy injectors tick. Does it sound up top in the head or down in the block?

will it do it with the bonnet up whilst you free rev it?

its definatly more a ticking sound from around the head/cam area, like a tapet sort of noise.

yes it does do it by free reving it, but it disapears on engine deceleration.

i hope that helps you a bit.

ive heard big end noises before, but this sound is higher pitched than the kncking sound you get from that.

how many kms has the engine done?

what oil/viscosity are you running?

how often do you change your oil?

Its most likely just worn lifters that are "tapping", and if thats the case then its not going to require a rebuild if you dont have the mulah yet, everything will still work, it will just slowly get louder over time and doubt you'll lose any performance.

Try running some thicker oil as this may help quiten it up but the real fix will be a head recondition (ie new lifters, check cams etc)
