I am wondering what ECU people recommend for an R33 Series II Skyline?

I have seen the Apexi Power FC and Motech's as replacement computers, and I have also read about the piggy back units - which is better?

I'm no expert but from reading these forums the power FC is in limited supply, Motech are not the best, piggy back units only do half the job. I was considering Haltech or Aultronic (spelling) when I purchased the Power FC.

What does your tuner say? He will likely be the one using it. What modifications have you done or will you do?

As with most ECU upgrades, it is generally better to ask what your tuner is most familiar with.

I used a PowerFC on the Subaru and it worked very well without missing a beat. As a20089 asked, what modifications do you have? It also depends on your budget and what you are looking to get out of it. I personally would pick a standalone ECU over a Piggyback unit, however, i've never used a piggyback unit.

Haltech make awesome ECU's but I am not sure on what tuners in Canberra work with these.

I have just started taking it to Autotech so I'm not sure what what they recommend - maybe I should call and ask them! :ermm:

Th car has FMIC, high flow air filter, 3" exhaust with high flow cat, manual (under bonnet) turbosmart boost controller, high flow fuel pump...

autotech are also haltech dealers if i remember correctly.

trojan had no trouble tuning my haltech and dave at gas tune knows them very well too

they can all tune power fc's too, but may not have the support if it has problems in the future ie: need to get fixed or car wont work

Power FC is probably the best plug and play replacement computer for Skylines / Silvias etc.

Most tuners around will have the FC tune program aswell.

I use the PFC for my RB25DET and its been perfect... Never had an issue.

That was only because I turned the boost up without having it re-tuned - it screwed with the mixtures.

My bad

Does the Power FC hand contoller also act as an electronic Boost Controller? Or should I invest in a Power AFC(?) for that?

What sort of cost should I be looking at for a Power FC to suit a R33 skyline, I have seen them with controller for $1540 on ebay..

For boost control through the PFC you need to buy the add on boost solenoid kit, which will set you back about $500 - $600 on top of the cost of the FC itself, which should cost around $1,000 from Nengun.com

Be careful which FC you get though because I think (and I could be wrong) there are 2 different types for RB25DET, one is for non VCT (early models) and the other for VCT (later models).

Make sure you shop around, there might be someone on these forums that will sell one fairly cheap.

You still haven't mentioned mods, or future mods so....

Stick with a PFC or signal bending piggy back unless you know your going to want double the rwkw's down the road; then you could possibly convince yourself to spend the $2400 for plug-in Haltech E11 & $500 tune or Autronic SM4 (even more $$)

Motech are not the best

They're up there

Before you spend $350min on the Apexi Boost Control kit, consider checking the costs of other full fledged, multi featured EBC's

With a handful of breathing mods, you still cant go past a PFC for cost and ease of use. Yes, there are 1000hp/9sec crazy cars running PFC's, but at that level, it would be easier to justify spending the $3k on Auttronic/Motec/Haltch etc etc.

PS: Your going to find a lot more information in the Forced Induction Performance area, then the small local CBR section

PFC is probably best bang for the buck / easiest in many ways. Anything else that is good is at least twice the price plus installation. Ed at Autotech tunes PFCs and has the good software to do it with. Plus he's a safe tuner.

Only other close option is Nistune, where they remap your stock ecu and the tuning software is very similar to a PFC. Not sure if they do R33 GTSt, google the PLMS site and it should tell you. AFAIK it's the only proper ecu remap system about, and costs $500 to install a new flashable board in your ecu and supply laptop programming software.

Cheers

Pete at autotec is a Autronic dealer and as for price on them they are only between $2000 and 2400 retail for a SM4 which is arguably the best computer on the market ,if it was a toss up between this and a haltech then go for the Autronic as it is so much more advanced than the Haltech and costs are the same.

On top of this you will need to have it wired in for both the Autronic and haltech with a cost of about $1000 unless you can wire it yourself like a friend and i did on my car.

If you can get a power fc then they are also very good for most applications but they are not being made any more for the gtst so you may have trouble.

like has been said... mods please future and present this will tell what you really need!!!! if you only want small mods then a safcII is your best bet and bang for buck. Or even a re map. I have seen good things done with unichip these days too. If your chasing big big HP then autronic is your go. Another option is to wire in a 32 ECU and get Ceffiy to remap it for you.

For general HP gains with injectors, turbo, fuel pump, IC, then go a PowerFC or microtech I know a lot of people dont like them with skylines but if tuned right they are fine even a LINK ecu from New Zealand are a good thing and they are plug in too...

Oh the Microtech are plug in as well these days

Although plenty of people use the SAFC with ok results, i would not suggest this as they only modify your existing air flow signal and are really only a band aid same goes for unichip, also it will cost you about $500 for either one. If you are after fuel economy and drive it every day then the microtech is not the computer for you, these are a great ecu for drags but are very poor at controlling cruise mixtures with limited plots available(just look at any microtech car and you will see black bumpers on most).A microtech will set you back $1100 to 1300 for an ltx 10 or 12 so for 900 to 1000 the power fc is the better option.

As stated if you are only doing minor mods then go the power fc and if you are planning good mods or just want something that runs flawlessly then go for a haltech or autronic or even link.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
