Im looking at getting RE55's on my GTR32, with the standard rims...

I know they're good on the track, but how good are they on the street? More particularly, wet/raining streets...???

Any advice/recommendations welcome :)

P.S: I noticed the sticky thread on tyre recommendations, but farked if im gonna go through 33odd pages looking for something remotely close to an answer :P

It may be worth your while getting a second set of rims - larger ones at 9" width. Reason being that GT-R's are heavy and punish their tyres. So the extra inch or so rubber helps, albeit at a price. 255/40/17 are a good size. In any case check the load rating.

As for your second question. Yes they are driveable in the wet. But to be honest they are a noisy, harsh and offensive tyre that I wouldn't recommend running around on every day.

Thanks for that djr81...

Im kinda hoping to not have to buy rims as that would add even more to the money i gotta dish out :P but i might have to...

The noise isnt *tooo* much of a problem as its my second car; im just wondering how it would cope if i decide to go for a burn around the block and it decided to rain on me coz they dont seem to have as much tread as a street tyre obviously....dont wanna end up sliding into the gutter lol

pretty much any decent second hand 17X9 +20-+30 rims you buy are cheaper than just one set of 255/40/17 RE55s. so if buying the second set of rims saves you 1/3rd wear on your RE55s then that's an extra set you have every 3 sets.

and yes, once they are worn down they are pretty average in the wet. when new they are fine, but after a while they become pretty nasty. I've had wheelspin accelerating in 3rd on the road with worn semi slicks. and had a big moment. that little ring tightener was enough to convince me to use road tyres on the road, and track tyres on the track.

    • Finally have an update on this  Rack came in this week so I did a test fit. You do need the S chassis bushings since the rack is 5mm thinner than the R33 rack. The main issue I foresaw and ran into was one of the hardlines not lining up properly with there it's meant to on the rack. After some gentle coercing and bending very slightly, I managed to get it to fit without any kinks and keeping the hardline pretty much in all of the factory mounting positions. I did have to unbolt all of the soft mounts to move the line around so I could snake it out and bend it safely but it looks good to me for now. I'll update when the rack is fully bolted in and functioning.
    • I hear this thread needs an update following its adventures last Wednesday!
    • What are you thinking makes a sequential shit to drive on the street? About the ONLY thing I can think of, is if you're wanting to be able to roll up to lights in third or second and pop it straight into neutral, or you want to come down two or three gears, say out of 5th and back to second, but they shift quick enough it doesn't really matter
    • I'm not a drag racing guy, but that was a good watch. Didn't Ibrahim's car have some cooch! But the big question is....WTF is with so many of them running without seatbelts!
