Finally got my new Splitfire coilpacks from Slide tonight. While I was fitting them up, I thought I would check the spark plugs. The car has been running on "not all 6", so I thought it might have been a coil. Last time the engine ran like this, a piece of piston was playing pinball inside #2 chamber, and had punched the gap on the plug to nothing.

Anyway, found all plugs were generally nice and clean, 1 or 2 were a little black, but not bad. But #4 had a oil obviously coating the electrodes (these are Iridium plugs). Gave it a bit of a wipe down before re-installing it, because I don't have spares.

After all back together, fire the engine and engine runs smoothly.

But I'm concerned about the oil. What's your diagnosis?

if its oil on the electrode, it could mean that you've got some nasty blow by caused by a f**ked piston/ring.

If it was light blow-by you'd see your electrode covered in a white chalky substance. but actual oil is a different story.

this could also mean that your PCV or breathers are blocked and is pushing oil into your combustion chamber.

im surprised you said 'a piece of piston was playing pinball inside #2 chamber' so casually. you didnt mention if you fixed this??

Not the diagnosis I was looking for. But it might be the excuse I need to give the cylinders a good hone. The engine was not really run-in correctly, and it burns oil a fair bit.

Unlikely, since it's only in 1 cylinder.

That was in the original RB20 - fixed it by fitting a new (RB20) engine.

how do you know its oil....?

if the cylinder is over fueling (ie leaky lower injector seal) then the plug will come out black and wet looking like oil but not actually oil... its just way too rich on that cylinder...

Yes, hadn't considered that possibility.

Was thinking of replacing injectors anyway - the little pintel things were all damaged. I'll have another look in the cooler weather.

    • The incentives are mostly the same, yes. Ethanol is cheap compared to the cost of doing 98-100 RON with crude oil alone. 87 to 93-94 AKI all with E10. In 2020 Canada mandated E10 as a part of their "renewable fuel standard" and is supposedly going to go to E15 in 2030. In California where there are only 8 refineries with two threatening to shut down next year it's been over 20 years now of E10 and 91 AKI maximum because there's just not enough refinery capacity or crude oil supply relative to the demand for premium unleaded fuel. And CARB's low carbon fuel standard means functionally none of the diesel available at the pump is made from crude oil anymore. It's almost all entirely 20% biodiesel blended with 80% renewable diesel (hydrotreated vegetable oil) now. The number of gasoline vehicles that support E15 or higher ethanol concentrations is surprisingly low, I can't imagine it being wise to play tricks like this without flex fuel sensors in most of the fleet.

    • Hi all, Long time since I've posted here. Looking for some advice on what I can remove to further identify the cause of my issues.  I can move the passenger seat forward and back but the knob used to adjust the seat angle is pretty much free spinning, there's very little resistance.  Removing the side cover I can see that the chain is intact but the shaft for the adjustment spins without the gear attached to it moving.  What's my next step for disassembly here? Is this a common fault? Just being a little cautious as I didn't want to start removing bolts for a spring to fly out or something equally as stupid.  Cheers
    • Those above shitboxes, mediocre and above usually have a turbo strapped to them, hence the slightly higher octane is required.
