Hi guys,

I have an issue with the sunroof on the r33. I went through the car wash(Only purchased it an hour ago), and suddenly had water dripping on my head.

So I then opened the sunroof, and then went to close it and it would stop half way. The motor tries to keep going but it just gets stuck.

Anyone have any ideas on what this could be? Cant really keep it open as it is, as it will be raining soon.

Also, the interior slide out bit seems to be loose, and not guided. Is this how it should be?

Thanks guys in advance.

Having a sunroof is awesome, I love it, but also blows at the same time...just another hole for water to leak through. Try checking/replacing the sunroof window seal to eliminate it leaking again. Check the the window guiding rails (on each side of the sunroof), for anything obstructing the rollers from moving. Maybe rusted, unlubricated, etc etc. Maybe having a look at the moving gears, maybe it's lost a tooth, therefore motor keeps winding but it aint moving, just stuff like that. Could be problem from ages and has damaged the interior slide pannel, as usually constructed with chip wood sheet, or something like that....im just ranting on...hope it makes sense to you owen. haha.

Damn, I cant even manually close it. This is not a good start

It seems to stop right when the two feet (The parts where the roof tilts at the axis) approach the little openings on the rails.

It does not stop as if it were a motor problem, or tooth, it seems to just suddenly stop as if it has hit something.

the sunroof runs on cables that corkscrew when the motor rotates..

Is the motor trying to rotate?

Could be that one of the cables is stuck - mine did a similar thing where a cable came out of it's grip and the sunroof wouldn't really move.. Ended up having to take the roof lining out, take the sunroof out and pull it apart and replace the cable with a spare one I picked up..

The feet that it slides on can break as well which will cause it to jam.. i've attached the service manual for it.. This was the same as my S2 sunroof..

Costs about $400 for the new feet I think.. Ring nissan.. My advice, pull it out of the car and than asses what is wrong with it - you can't fix anything with it in the car..

I agree with Links. The best thing to do would be to take it apart and try and find out what is wrong like that. It could be a whole heap of different things, so we couldn't tell you for sure just from your explanation. We'd have to see it for our selves. But good luck trying to fix it tho.

Yeh I have been looking at it, and it looks like it is snagging on the roof where there is a support?

Just wondering if the feet that push up are stuck in the upright position? Or close to it.

Another thing, When the sunroof is open(into the roof), I assume the up down button would not work at all??

i had the same problem in my R32, all i did is lubricate with a long nosel. but u have to clean it first, if it doesnt work, the only thing u can do is wen it get stuck halfway u open it with a button or push it back and then when closing push the screen with ur hand from the start to close, thats wat i did until i oiled it ;)

I had the same problem where the sunroof opens 1/4 way and then stops. Then when you press close, it won't close anymore. I had to press the close and push the sunroof back to it's original position to get it to work. For my solution, it was to replace the sunroof motor which took me a looooong while to find as no one sells a 2nd hand unit. I finally got the motor on e-bay and it's for the Silvia S14 model. Most of the parts that are on the R33 are identical to the S14. Got it and installed it. Now the sunroof works like a charm. As for the leak, it's just the glass seal. Replaced that easily as well.

I have tried to push it.. Its too damn solid.

It appears to stop at the guide links?? Which appear to be loose.

Am I able to remove it with it half open?

Is there any way to close it manually? (Its raining quite a bit).

FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Took me 4 hours to rip the car apart, take the whole unit out (Myself I may add.. Tough job), Took all the rails out and found out it was a piece of filing/metal that was blocking one of the rails.

Thing was, it was between the two runners, so I could only get to it by taking the glass off.

Anyhow, off to the car wash... Its well over due!!!

Cheers guys.

    • Hello Liam - HA - somewhere in flies - possibly I have an update, but I have been so busy, projects have taken a back seat to getting business back on track.  I will let you know the outcome, but I think I am going to go for the 8HP,  CHEERS.  ELVIS
    • Thanks Joshuaho96, yes - as someone else also suggested, the 8HP seems the 'smart choice' - HA - and ZERO to do with cost, but I am sure 8 speeds will be better than 6 speeds - HA - maybe.  I will purchase a new 8HP,  Thanks.  ELVIS.
    • Nobody said anything about getting a "...cheap Falcon box..."- it was JUST a question about a specific transmission.  And YOU may have a problem with not enough $ - HA - I do NOT - so please keep your comments like you are some financial guru to yourself.  BUT - much appreciated re the cost of a new 8HP and I twill probably be the way I go.  Thanks.  ELVIS.
    • Most people I know in the BMW world are swapping 6HPs for 8HPs. The 6HP has a big issue with one of the clutch drum bushings wearing out shockingly early which leads to them going into limp mode going into 5th/6th gear as the oil pressure loss from the worn bushing causes clutch slip. Even with the adaptations in shifting the TCU can't bump line pressure enough to keep the clutches from slipping and burning. I've personally looked at a 335d with 6HP28 with one owner and ~90k miles on it and the transmission adaptations were way out of spec and even though it nominally drove ok I'm confident it would have needed a full rebuild sooner than later. Other than that they're fine, but the 8HP doesn't really have weird issues like this to my knowledge and they're in everything these days so pulling them out of crashed cars isn't too hard.
    • There is an ABS pump and a few solenoids. You could trigger the front/rear solenoids with a pressure bleeder attached with a Consult 2.
