Hey guys,

My name is Richard and i recently traded in my 1992 Vtec H22A Honda Prelude for a 1999 imported Neo 6 Naturally aspirated Skyline GT which is very stock and very nice with 44,000 kms on the dial (paid 21,grand).

Just wanted to say hi and see if i could perhaps get help on my interior? i have what looks like a japanese kenwood double bay audio cd, cassette and radio head unit that was either installed new in japan or came with the car - im not sure. At any rate it doesnt play mp3 cds or usb thumb drives like my head unit i salvaged from my honda does (single bay kenwood MP4036U). I have the new 1bay mp3 player head unit and have bought a old S14 cover for the soon to be unused bay on my dash now i have to do the change over!... great...

Basically i cannot find any screws running along the gear knob/dash to remove the cover and im not sure at all how to go about this... Furthermore im not sure if the Silvia 14 bay will fit or if the new kenwood MP3 Player will fit in but my first obsticle is getting the old one out. Im fine for wiring/soldering as i have the respective JDM and austrlalian skyline/kenwood electronics manuals respectivly and a friend who will help me with that.

Can anyone help me? i have tried to upload pictures to illustrate my problem but im not sure if it will work

Anyway - hope to see you guys on the road!

Since its a audio question u should really be posting in the car audio section. Btw Isnt $21k abit much for a NA? Think u can pickup a Turbo auto for that price. Anyway answer to ur question.

1. Pull out ash tray, remove screw behind it.

2. The plastic bit surrounding the gear stick just pulls out, no screws. But once that is out ull note the 2 lower screws behind holding the head unit.

3. Pull out air cond vents, no screws here, may require abit of prying on the edge but becarefull if using sharp objects like a screwdriver.

4. Once all the above is removed, ull note the necessary screws to remove to take out Head Unit. Becareful when removing the H/U alot have scratched the plastic bit surrounding the H/U.

Hope that helps.

Wow thanks alot for that! I didnt expect such a well laid out answer - i guess this has been asked before. Regarding the price however I realise it was a bit much - but hey it is only 44,000kms and my license (p player) wont let me have a turbo so this was the best I could find in my area - actually i was also looking at the new MR2 Spyder for the same value but it was just too impractical.

Thanks again ill do this change over when i have an entire day to spend on it. Btw do you happen to know if that S14 Cover/bay will fit?

Not sure bout the Silvia fascia...

If its the newer series MR2 :( U made the right choise with a R34. Learn how these things handle & u can always upgrade to a turbo later :(

Oh btw removing the h/u is quite easy, definitely wont need to set aside a day for it.

Thanks mate, i have only recently figured out how to get the best out of it using trip/tiptronic gear things - i only hope im not destroying the auto tranny by driving with it all the time, eccept for parking lots and traffic. Of course I engine brake with it too - its just so much better then auto auto but i figure its there/made to be used.

I have kicked the back out on a few occasions in the rain - scared the shit out of me as i had the aircon on and i really didnt mean to do it. It was also in the city and if there was someone in the lane next to me i would have clipped them. I need to goto a carpark or something to figure out countersteer and when to do it etc. But it turns out its illegal : ( Sucks because thats how my dad learned how to defencivly drive in canada.

-Snow covered empty carpark

-over steer

-???

-Profit

Yeh, gotta learn how to control that over-steer, scared the shit out of me a few times as well. If it kicks it, I don't mind, but when it won't go back into line, then you have a problem!! And hitting high RPM in the rain is also a lot of fun. Arse kicks out and fish tails, not bad for a NA... Btw, its called a DIN, not a bay, and taking a head unit out is really easy. Also, most Nissan dashs are very similar, so the DIN space covers all fit. If its off a Nissan it should fit, in my experience anyway.

    • I hadn't thought about the variable power steering assist. Presumably, it will always be the same level of assist as you get in an S14. The R32/3/4 are either helliishly heavy (at low speeds) if the solenoid is not powered at all, or hellishly too light (at high speed) if it is powered all the time. I presume that it is PWM controlled on those cars. I hadn't thought about the S cars not having variable assist. ugh. What crappy plebby cars they must be!
    • Hmm yeah that is a good point. It looks like it'll just bolt in with no real issue besides maybe the bushings being different. My other concern was that 2 pin plug that I assume is used in some way to control the rack solenoid depending on the speed signal from the ecu. The DMAX rack doesn't even have that plug though so, don't think it'll matter. Might just order the rack and see how it goes. Will update this when I figure something out
    • I'd say it's a fair bet that the feed and return fluid lines will be in different enough spots that you would need to come up with a way to cut the originals short and adapt with new hard line adaption or braided teflon hoses or somesuch. But really, you have the car, you have the photos of the DMAX rack - you should be able to go out there and see for yourself whether they're in the same or different spots.
    • I've been doing some looking around and honestly was just considering throwing a new rack at it. I saw that the dmax silvia rack bolts up into the 33 with the silvia bushings but not sure if the high pressure lines will sit in the correct spot. I believe other version of the 33 rack are the same/similar to the racks that can be opened up without as much fuss so I assume the dmax rack would fit but any ideas?
    • I've never played with one, but I would expect that you are correct. That slot looks like it is intended to be used to unscrew the end, and the flats on the body would be better than grabbing it around the round bit with a pipe wrench. So, yeah, probably unscrews. You'll probably have to make a tool to drive in that slot.
