hey all

i remember i read somewhere or someone told me if u dont hook up a boss kit properly on a 32 with that hicas shit on the steering wheel, u loose power steering..

im 90% sure

but i asked a mechanic and some mates n they reckon the boss kit has absolutely nothing to do with loosing power steering.. yes my p/s fluid is a little low, but seriously it went from full power steering - 5-10 mins installing the boss kit to NO powersteering..

theres no oil leaks on the ground or anything i cant explain it..

with the installation of the boss kit, i didnt bother connecting the red cable to the horn (and letting it touch some metal/nut) so my horn duznt work.. i had to get to work in 20 mins so i just left it out thinking 'meh who needs a horn for today' lol.

could that be the problem?

thanks in advance

The steering wheel boss certainly does have something to do with the loss of power steering. The hicas computer needs to know the angle of the front wheels, and gets this info from a sensor within the steering wheel boss. I did it a long time ago, but from memory, you need to get a specialised HICAS boss kit to suit the skyline. If the computer doesnt get the info, it will go into default mode after about 5 mins of driving and you'll lose power steering. You'll also lose it if the steering wheel isnt on straight.

The same thing will happen if your speedo doesnt work, as the hicas computer also needs a speed input from behind the dash.

Shaun.

when you took your stock steering wheel and boss off, you would have noticed a cable for the horn and another for the HICAS.

the hicas one is mounted to the stock boss and as said above, it judges the angle of the wheel etc.

so you either need to "backyard job" attach the hicas sensor to the new boss as it was on the stock one, or spend double what you did to get a boss kit suitable to use on HICAS car.

The steering angle sensor isn't mounted to the boss, it's mounted to the column and has a pair of prongs that poke into the boss. If the boss doesn't have provisions for these prongs the sensor will not turn with the wheel. That being said, when I tried to put a non-hicas boss on it clamped up so tight that the wheel wouldn't turn..

ok well the boss kit is a gktech one, its worked fine on other 32s im assuming its just cos i didnt connect the other cable...

ill have a crack tomorrow n let u know how it goes

thanks for all the input

oh and btw i put the stock wheel back on and walla power steering... goes to show even machanics have no fkn idea wat they are talking about.

yeah the gk one is a "ON-07"

i think i need a "ON-110" that is equiped for hicas model cars?

didnt work

how much are HKB? never heard of them.. are they china as well or jap?

There's an installation guide for people using these boss kits with hicas equipped cars here:

    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
