Hey Guys,

I know not the best place to ask but thought it would be worth a start.

Recently been thinking about the amount of k's that i have been clocking up on the line and was looking at an altenative cheap runaround.

Just did my bike stay upright course so was looking at a cheap ('L' Legal) bike that i could use....being that i know NOTHING about bikes anyone have any suggestions about models and prices (i've noticed that bikes tend to retain their value!!).

At this stage i've been looking at ZZR and CBR as they seem to be most recommended but would be interested in hearing any other suggestions (no i'm not the postie bike type!).

Stay away from zzr, you'll get bored in a week. The cbr250 on the other hand is so much fun.

Check this out..

-4 cylinder 4 stroke 250 that revs to 19,000rpm

-16 valve gear driven cams with scissor gears to cut down on noise

-4 carbies and an induction noise due to cam timing overlap that will excite you.

-0-100klm/h in about 5.2 seconds and the quarter mile in about 14.5s.

-4.4 litres per 100klms travelled if you don't kill everywhere

-These motors are almost bullet proof.

The above specs are for the cbr250rr. Go for the import model, they are easier to find and about $1,500 less than aussie model. They also have about 45bhp compared to aussie spec of 40 bhp.

You can pick up a CBR250RR anywhere between $2,000 to $6,000 depending on condition. Get onto cbr forum and you could met some members near you that are willing to help you find a cbr. the site is www.cbr250.com

You know what to do next.

You can start on a 250 but you get tired of it quick. In the ACT you may learn on a variety of bike including 500cc twins like the ER-5 or more recomended the GS/E500 from susuki. Far more power and quicker over all than any 4 stroke 250.

I've found Honda to be the best build quality then susuki, yamah, kwaka then the rest.

I had a 91' Suzuki GS500E as a first bike. It was great. They're a bigger more comfortable bike than a 250 (depending on your size ofcourse) with good power, good riding position for learners and even though mine had 74000kms on it, it never let me down. The early 90's models start from about $2500 or you can by them brand new too with or without fearing.

ER6n or ER6f Kawka, VFR400 are good bikes and pretty sure they are L ready the CBR250s around canberra are over priced for their age and abuse, plus you will be bored in a week they are not that good if you ask me!!! AGV250 now thats some fun!! or you can go the trail / road choice for cheap!!! look at bike such as the wr250, (DT200 the 95 ones have a wr200 motorcross motor in them De-restricted they are fun and they are about 2g with top end already rebuilt.) KTM300, KTM525 not sure if that is L ready though bit much of a bike really to be riding on the road too, plenty of other trailbikes that would be great for road use

If you want a slow bike.. LOL,

I have a CB250 that is almost road registable i would part with. Needs very minor work. Not quick but any bike you get on your L's isn't quick... So it would be a cheaper option. Would help with saving for a bike once your off your L's.

I got it before i got a company car... Now i no longer need a cheap run about...

Im just about to go for my up right course, cant wait. I've been riding for a while so shouldn't have any dramas. Ill probs be riding around on my brothers old kwaka 200 lol. Very slow but fun none the less.

My other brother recently brought the 07 Yamaha R1. Fking awesome machine!!

Yeah a CBR250RR seems to be the way im leaning, highly recommended.......though most say to go for the Oz delivered version not imported. I'll do some more research on www.cbr250.com

Haven't heard of the other bikes but i'll do some research (google is my friend).

BNR32t...I think the CB250 was what i had to do the stay upright course on, not wrong about it being slow. I may be interested, did you want to PM me details?

    • Must have been an absolute nightmare to drive when the power steer was out, the rack ratio/wheel size/caster is all set up for power assistance

    • I checked the injectors again (1 and 2, since they’re easiest to access) to make sure they weren’t clogged. Even though the entire fuel system had been cleaned, I wanted to be certain. Everything looked clean, so I reinstalled and connected everything. When I started the car to confirm everything was okay, it immediately revved up high, so I shut it off straight away. I checked to see if I’d missed a vacuum hose or something, but everything was connected. On the second attempt, the car ran without the high idle, but I noticed a distinct “compressed air” sound coming from the engine bay. Tracing the sound, I pushed injector #6 forward slightly and the noise stopped — it turned out it wasn’t seated properly, despite the fuel rail being bolted down. While holding it in place, the car idled steadily without stalling and ran for over 5 minutes. At this point, I pulled all six injectors out just in case I hadn’t seated them correctly or dirt had gotten onto the O-rings. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had damaged 3 out of 6 injectors (the OEM 270cc ones) during installation. So yes, this was my fault. Since only the pintle caps were damaged, I’ve ordered a Fuel Injector Service Kit from NZEFI to refurbish them. In the meantime, I reinstalled my new injectors – the car now idles fine for over 15 minutes without stalling. I have not attempted to drive it so far. It’s not perfect yet, as it hesitates when the throttle is pressed, but it’s a big improvement. Unplugging the IACV with the new injectors idles at around 800rpm, even with the IACV screw tightened fully. But this is probably due to tune.
    • I wanted to try and preserve the front bumper as long as possible, they're not cheap and are made to order in Japan. Taking inspiration from my previous K11 Micra build where I made an undertray for the Impul bumper, I did the same for this BN Sports bumper but a little slimmed down.  This time round I only made a 'skid plate' (if that's the correct wording/term) for just the bumper surface area, the Micra version covered the gap like an undertray. Starting off with a sheet of mild steel approx. 0.9mm thick 4ft x 2ft in size. I traced around the bumper, cut it out and cleaned the edges. Luckily I was able to get two halves from one piece of metal In the video I installed it as is, but I've since then I've removed it to spray and add a rubber edging trim. The rubber trim is suitable for 1-2mm and it's a really nice tight fit. The bolts had to be loosened due to the plates being too tight against the bumper, the trim wouldn't push on I used some stainless M6 flat headed bolts for a flusher finish (rather than hex heads poking down), I believe this style fastener is used for furniture too incase you struggle to source some. The corner's are a little wider, but this may be an advantage incase I get close to bumping it  The front grill got some attention, finally getting round to repairing it. Upon removal one fixing pulled itself out of the plastic frame, one side is M8 that fixes inside of the frame, where as the other side is M5. Not knowing I could get replacements, I cut down an M8 bolt, threaded it inside the frame along with a decent amount of JB Weld.  The mesh was replaced to match the bumper. One hole on the bonnet/hood had to be drilled out to 8mm to accommodate the new stud, once the glue had set it could be refitted. I think the reason the grill was double meshed was to hide the horn/bonnet latch (which makes sense) but I much prefer it matching the bumper Bumper refitted and it's looking much better IMO The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVZP35io9MA

There's nothing wrong with having coloured silicone hoses, but I realise as I'm getting older I prefer monotone engine bays with a splash of colour on the engine cover(s). I cover this in a lot more detail in the Youtube video, so unfortunately there's limited photos of the process. The intercooler, upper radiator, boost vacuum and upper breather hoses were all changed to black silicone with mikalor clamps. The only blue left is a blanking cap at the back of the inlet manifold and the GReddy pulleys (which will be replaced for stock when the cambelt gets replaced) While the intercooler pipes were off I gave them a quick clean/polish too A before photo I do have a replacement air filter on its way.
