Driving back from the city today and noticed steam comming from my left wheel arch.

I pulled over to find steam and coolant leaking from the back of the head. (between firewall and cylinder head, and up high)

I can see that its comming from near the heater hoses, (but cant clearly see the source) and wondered if there is a welsh plug or hose on the back of the cylinder head.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Can you advise on parts; costs and options.

Nissan being nissan I'd assume its the water feed/return which ever it is that runs from under the plenum around the back of the head then to the turbo. Joining the two metal hoses is a small rubber hose.

I replaced that then the others started to let go. :P

sounds right to me also....Sorry to say this but its a Bastard of a thing to replace also....Nowhere where you can get your hands in to work...If you can get the car on a hoist it will make life a bit easier as this is how my hoses were replaced...Off memory I think the starter motor even had to come out so there was room to work....Good luck

I found a heater and cooling diagram for the 33's but I bont think they have the pipe you are refering to.

I did a few searches and read comments about the pipes under the 32 plenums, but they indicated 33's are quite different.

Still a hard to reach hose would be preferable to a cylinder head off to get to a welsh plug.

sec 278... Is possibly where it runs off to around the back of the head. The culprit hose being 14056NB if I'm reading the diagram correctly. Not 100% sure as the length of metal pipe in the pic looks too short to run the length behind the head but it is only a pic. :P

There has to be some form of water hose coming from the back of the head as there is only 1 turbo water feed/return which ever it is on the passenger side of the block.

I replaced mine by lowering the back of the gearbox down with the scissor jack and then reaching up; slicing the old rubber hose off with a Stanley knife then sliding on the new. I used a small socket set to remove/install the hose clamps.

Its not too difficult but I did replace it with the car on the pit of which I no longer have :)

I have also had a leak from around the area you are talking bout it turned out to be a water line from the turbo. I just followed the line from the turbo until i found the leak maybe give that ago. It was a pain to get to but possible with some patience

Give Joel a prize, you were spot on

Just went out for another look, and to follow the turbo coolant lines and I saw the leak.

Its one of the 8mm hoses at the back of the head that feed/return from the turbo. (why didn't the use pipe instead of hose  )

Now I'll have to get some replacements.

Has anyone found aftermarket hose kits for the GTSt (I have seen them for the GTR) preferably blue silicone to match the other hoses, or will most of the GTR hoses fit in the GTSt.

errrrr who fixed it ? a pair of pointy nose pliers about 8 inches in lenght become ya best friend when getting to this hose

cheers mid life crisis

I pulled the rocker covers off and its much more accessable. (but still a pain to reach)

I'll try Nissan on Monday to get a collection of hoses, most of them are more like PVC pipes now rather than rubber.

It's also given me an excuse to paint the rocker covers and change the plugs.

mate while your at it do all the hoses...My experiences with cars is that once the first hose goes the rest are only weeks behind it.Do the lot with Silicon...Full on job but worth it in the end...One thing to strike off the to do list

    • Wife wanted basket things in the wardrobe in our temporary house. Thought about ripping our the wardrobe and fitting the entire IKEA set, but it's a temporary house and we want to move in a few years. So IKEA advertises this as a 50cm unit, however the actually basket and rails measure 46cm wide. Only issue was depth, IKEA stuff is quite deep, where as the builder special junk is super shallow at less than 40cm. Send it, chopped the rails, then offset the mounting holes, job done, happy wife, less shit scattered all over the bedroom. Did the same to the other side too. Also drove the Skyline shit box today, dropped off oil at Supercheap Auto. I didn't realise they only now take max 2x bottles per visit. I visited 2x Supercheap Autos.
    • I've seen similar actually in my situation. You never know what tables are attempted to be used when the car thinks it's -99C or +200C. The fail state is not usually that extreme but you know what I mean - it was in my case though! This is where being able to read all the sensors is useful cause you see this stuff really quickly.
    • The above is very important. However as long as you keep timing relatively low, it's plausible to make your own knock ears and plausible to learn to tune with a modern ECU that can do wideband O2 correction like a boost controller. I mean if you only have one viable road to even drive the car on, learning to tinker to this level may be worth doing given you can't do much else with the car...?
    • I find the fact that the rear plate has to be bent inwards at the rear not so bad: but the front is just awful: It's like come on. (these are my very old, now retired/turned in plates) TBH it is a lot of money to fix a minor issue, the fact I said "I'll never really spend the money on doing this" is why people ended up buying them as a gift for a 'car guy' who can be hard to shop for.. for car guy things.
    • I just bent the ends of my premo plates. It even went through Regency like that after the engine conversion and the inspector (a great bloke!) just squinted his eyes and said "I didn't see that". Plates, and how they look, are just something that have zero importance to me.
