hi guys,

i did a search but could not find the answer - my brother has an r32 gtr with blown stock turbo's, been off the road for 4yrs!

i want to help him out & offer to pull the engine out of the car (with his help), he has a large garage & i can get an engine stand...i have pulled enignes out of other cars in the past on my own (i am mechanically minded) i.e. commodore, subaru, gemini, datsun 1600 & fj20turbo etc & that was quite easy.

i have heard different stories about the rb26dett though so i need advice on whether it is difficult or worth the heartache.

options 2 is taking the turbo's off whilst engine is in the car which looks very painful for access & room.

i do them engine in...much easier in the long run.

My friend done this for the first time on a R33 gtr last week, took him 4 hours off and 5 hours on, only took a bit longer as new manifolds were used and was difficult to get to the nuts that hold turbos to manifolds, and had to remove a compressor cover to get to them easily.

only tools i moded from memory 12mm open end spanner cut down for rear inside turbo flange on rear turbo and

rachet spanners will be good and lots of bandaids or 5 axis small ass hands and most important neighbours who not mind swear words

The ones I had trouble with are the manifold nuts directly behind the turbos under the manifold. Also ratchet ring spanners seem like a good idea in theory, but most times the head is too large to fit where it needs to be.. much like my hands.

Stubby ratchet ringies are your best friends when doing GTR turbos R+I.

Done it over three times now, just need access to top and bottom of the lhs of engine.

Remove front turbo and manifold first then the rear. Just look up the manual for instructions.

Takes about a day depending on lots of things lol.

If the turbos are blown, i would do a compression test before you do anything. Its fairly common when gtr turbos blow to take the motor with them.

when u start the car it wont rev past 3000rpm - revs like an old datsun like its choking...no power at all

If the car has been sitting there for 4 years,

i'd pull the motor out for sure, and replace all the heater hoses etc etc around the engine..

tho its not sounding the best, perhaps leakdown, and compression test. and even take the head off to inspect?

car will happiliy rev with a blown turbo, it just wont make boost...sure you havent popped an intercooler hose off or something silly like that?

I rebuilt my stock turbos with steel internals.

You Don't need to take out the engine to replace the turbos.

Just have to remove all the piping on top till you get to the turbos.

that actually sounds highly likely - that has happened on my previous car & the symptoms are identical

    • Ok thanks..that was my second question if i can somehow bypass this even with Nistune(that is all i have right now...aparat from stock ECU. So with some aftemarket it can by "bypassed" or make it work?  I know there is Link or Haltech (mainly used). We have ECUmaster here so i will gather some info about it.
    • Yes. You will need to get the original boost sensor and wire it in. That is.... if you plan to use a stock ECU - even a Nistuned ECU. The Nissan ECU will not operate correctly without it connected. And yes, it will do annoying stuff like you are experiencing. You will almost certainly be better off with some aftermarket ECU, than trying to hunt down rare sensors.
    • Ok so ABS/TCS is "not" the problem. Yeah i know now about the ABS with Nistune(i told that to the Nistune guy) but iam not 100% why or why i dont have ABS. ABS cube is in the engine (always has been) but i had braked couple of times rly hard and brakes just locked and scream. Does all Skylines have ABS cube? I need to ask but i have a picture of engine bay and i do not see that (100% is not in that place) If i do not have this the car can do what mine is?(cutting around 4000 rpm) Here is the pic of my engine bay(only one i have) BUT i think i dont have that cuz loom was used from my RB20DE NEO and i know (obviously) that it does not have boost control or any wire to that...) so maybe that is the problem? (i dont know for 100% if that car where the engine is from had that)...but i dont have the loom from that
    • I'm with you here. It's either loom has an issue, OR, injectors are not functioning properly. It could even be they're just constantly dribbling, hence the wet, but not firing.
    • Depending on how long the car sat it is very possible for injectors to be stuck open or closed, I'd get them cleaned and flow tested. Other than that, obviously when the loom changes and the car doesn't start any more....the loom is suspect so some tracing / comparing may be required
