Hey peoples

Ok so obviously my car (r33 gtst s1 rb25det) is playing up so i'll get to the point lol.

Symptoms:

1. engine knocking? basically when i sit in my car on idle or driving it sounds and feels like somone is playing the drums under my bonnet.

you can feel a jolt and hear a repeating thud. thuds are random not continuous.

2. Sometimes when i accelerate, espesially when the engine is cold it reacts wierd, jolting back and forth before kicking in and taking off.

Its as if it trys to go then stops, then goes.

3. Exhaust sound? hard to explain. its definately louder, kind of crackily, sounds like a wrx. not a nice note. sounds rough.

4. I have a few gauges installed in my cabin. One of which is an air / fuel ratio. I generally ignore that gauge cause its always jumping from lean to rich

as i drive around, but recently it's been noticably different. When driving around if i'm not accelerating or in idle the gauge says i'm running

completely lean. Basically as far into lean as it can go. sometimes the red marker disappears.

This is obviously a concern for me hence why i'm asking for help.

My thoughts were possibly coil packs? spark plugs? injectors?

Really not sure. my best mate, who also drive an r33 gtst claims to have had the exact same problem.

He replaced his coil packs and it solved the problem. apparently.

I have acquired a set of splitfires to test with. I assume there the right model as they say ecr33 rb25det on the box.

Please let me know your opinions, advice or any experiences you've had which appeared the same

problem as mine and how you overcame it.

Thanks heaps

Guesty

I've got an N/A GTS-4, so obviously it's a bit different to your car, but I was having similar problems, though not to the extent that you've got

Anyway, I pulled that black cover off the engine and checked out the coils, and one of the plugs had worked itself a bit loose. I just pushed it back on until it clicked, and now my cars running a lot better, but still not perfectly. I noticed a few things were fixed such as:

-No longer get a strong petrol smell every time I start the car

-Car runs a lot smoother. Hard to explain, but it kinda used to feel like every road I drove on was covered in potholes. That feeling is now gone

-Exhaust note is better, but still makes a bit of a rattling/fluttering sound

I guess, in my case, one or more of my coils are stuffed, or maybe the plugs are dead from all the years of driving with them half plugged in

I would suggest to you to upgrade the coils to Splitfires. At least if the coils aren't the problem, then you'll have some nice new ones anyway :domokun:

I just then tested all my coil packs.

had the engine running and one by one, unplugged them to see if the idle would drop.

conclusion. my front 2 coil packs aren't working. other 4 seem to be working perfectly.

I actually have a brand new set of splitfires which i bought from autobarn.

one problem, they're the wrong type. there for a series 2 not 1. sigh.

on a lighter note i have a brand new set of splitfires for sale lol.

if anyones interested i'll let them go for $450 firm.

    • So either way it is gearbox out and look what is wrong?  I know about the input shaft bearing. Even before swap/new clutch the it sounded exactly like this: So is that inout shaft bearing or the other was installed backwards?  And can some please tell me the part number for that input shaft bearing? The gearbox is small box from R34 N/A and number is FS5W71C. Thank you
    • I am yet to see anyone ever regret a quaife or helical. ...other than drifting/skidpan duties. I kind of want to upgrade my factory helical with a Quaife (but really it's not ultimately that different, and is a MASSIVE UNDERTAKING), that's how good the hype is about them, that I want to try them 'just to see'
    • D2 and Ksport are essentially the same thing and basically just generic Taiwanese manufacture. Better than ChinaBay crap, but... not top shelf. Öhlins have got to be some of the best dampers around, so likely to be a good option. It's going to get to the point though where I suggest you buy from Oz. We have at least 2x excellent options here. If I were you though, I'd be talking to KW about doing something for the R33. There's bugger all difference between that and the 32. In GTR land, anyway.
    • KW only offers a set for the R32 GTR. Popular options are D2 racing, Ksport or Öhlins. I have a D2 Racing coilover set, though I don't know for sure which one.
    • Well, the good news is you have more than one very good option for new coilovers in and around your country. Worth the drive over to KW to talk about GTR stuff.
