Hi guys, just wanted to get your opinion on something.

I was planning to buy a specific R34 GTR, but at the mechanical inspection the guy said that the cam gears had been installed the wrong way. ie., retarding the intake and advancing the exit instead of the other way around. He could see this as it had a clear cam cover.

The guy who owns it has been driving it around like this for a year without noticing anything untoward. The GTR does feel a bit lazy though. The mechanic said that if he adjusted the gears the correct way, I should expect to come onto boost earlier, making it more responsive. Will this need a whole new Power FC tune again as he says? He is quoting me $800 for the whole job.

Cheers. Much appreciated.

You shouldnt need a new tune no, turn the cam gears around and reverse the settings, so when you flip it it would be on +4 then reduce it to -4. you'd have the same tune wouldnt u?

How the hell can u install cam gears the wrong way?!

Is the tuner the same bloke as your mechanic? sure hes not taking you for a ride?

No, the previous owner took it to a shop in SA, and now the car lives in Vic, and the mechanic knows GTRs very well.

I wasn't sure if you'd need to retune a PFC/ecu if cam gearing is changed, but he seemed to think so.

Thanks for the advice.

no offence but if u can manage to install cam gears the wrong way wat a f*kin muppet..... i could see that as almost impossible because the company who made the cam gears would have only made the gears with writing on one side that makes no sence at all... i repeat muppet

IF your mate was only looking at the A & R markings on the cam gears and came to his own conclusion that they were the wrong way round then he may be wrong. They were marked wrong during manufacture and you need to ignore the markings when tuning and just remember what was the correct direction camshaft should be turned to redard or advance inlet and exhaust cams. if they aren't these then yes the person who put them in must have been a real muppet..

if its an r34gtr and they've used cheap an nasty cam gears wat a knob u'd own a 50 to 60g car so u'd do it right with decent gear... lol

Whats the difference in cam gears.. They all do the same thing and its not like you can get measurement wrong.. they are basic and just spin.. so cheap or not i dont think it would matter unless your a rb30 or race car making crazy power and spining them at insane speed.

Most if not all the ones ive seen a billet aluminum not cast metal so they are all machined. To add almost all are anodized increasing the strength of the aluminum 5 fold.
