Good question Mark - I'm buggered if I know !!!

BTW - I got the intake manifold off - what a job !!!! Ahhh !

I've been having a look at how to take the head off - Looks like you have to take the cam pulleys off, (which you prolly need a puller to do) Then looks like you have to take both cams out , then undo the allen bolts under the cams - Hmmmm - might leave this job to the professionals.....

cya :(

I would leave the cam belt & cam gears on. Turn the car over until the notches in the cam allow access to the head bolts on one side, then turn the car over again until the other cam's notches allow access to the head bolts.

Its a dodgy situation as I know the RB20DET is an interference motor and if you remove the cam belt then turn the cam there is a possibility of the valves touching the pistons.

Am I on the right track or is there another way to do it?

Joel - 56mm inside diameter.. (oh and it's a RB25DET). Not sure about turning the engine over ATM- not much oil left in it. I spose it's rooted anyway.....

Dino - thanks :) Smartarse :shake:

Pete - I've done the bodgyist bog job on the Corolla. Rego in 2 weeks dude - What are we gonna do ? You gonna send me the papers or do I just dump it somehwere ? BTW, headlights permantantly on high beam after I tried to fix them, forgot to connect the horn back up so it doesn't work, steering wheel on upside down, tyres won't get thu rego - Anyone got a shotgun and I'll put it out of it's misery ! :D I think I'll sell it for $50 before rego expires - caviat that the new owner has to get the rego papers from Fatz. :( :shake: :D

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, the car is the shop now. And I went round there today to see them take the head and pistons out so we could assess the damage.

Results: 5 busted pistons - Ringlands. Bits and chunks going everywhere when the pistons were removed. (See pic).

The good news was that there was no bore damage and the bearings looked good. (But these will be replaced anyhow).

Interestingly - the timing belt that was meant to have been replaced 5000kms ago looked very similar to a worn orginial timing belt. I wonder what else we will find.

So the Block is off to get decked, prepped , painted, etc. The conrods are off to get measured, balanced, shotpeened, linished and cryo hardened. The head is off for a port and polish.

Should be on the road in a number of weeks - Yay !

Injectors are being checked - if good I will sell them and replace with Sards what ever the results.

Fuel pump (044) will be tested too - If farked, new 044 goes in

Engine Munching Systems (EMS) computer is being replaced by PFC and Q45 AFM.

Tomei 256 Cams going in

Turbosmart E-Boost - Electronic Boost control

Oil Cooler, Larger baffled sump

Nismo Engine mounts

HKS 1.6 mm composite head gasket

--><-- this far from ordering a Trust plenum from Nengun

Yep - I set a record - 5 out of 6 is a pretty good effort ! !

I'm thiking new turbo now - since I'm doing everything else. How's the 3037 Steve ?

Cheers,

The 3037 is pretty sweet:D Cant really say too much from an alrounder package until I have done head gasket and wound up the boost (when my trust plenum gets here:D).

Summary, for a street/strip car - awesome, absolutely awesome. I cant wait to get the traction side of things sorted better though:)

To drive, boost builds alot slower than the stock turbo at first, but doesnt start alot later in the rev range - once around 8lbs comes up (a bit under 3000rpm) all hell brakes loose, just like hitting a nos button.

Goes from around 8lbs to 15 in 2-300rpm or so I guess. Bit hard to tell when you are driving. With 1.2bar dialed in its alot worse - 120odd kph in 4th, 1/4 - 1/3 throttle (what I thought was gentle accelleration) and sideways:). So, until I get this traction sorted a bit better, the boost is staying down unless there is no traffic around. It just hits sooo hard sooo quickly.

The power band is great, can stay on boost through the gears no probs - that is running a 7200 redline. Just traction that is a problem.

    • Haha, i kow right? Could have bought so many cars for the same amount of money (or less) but driving Unicorn gives you at least +1mln to style 😅. Like wise man said "life's to short to drink cheap wine and drive boring cars" 😉
    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
