Att. all

today i pulled up outside a shop and come back out just to see police standing there inspecting the vehicle. i was asked if i was the owner of the vehicle and asked me if it had a BOV. i answered yes then was asked if it was atmo.... then asked if i knew it was illegal and i replied with yes, only in NSW.

of course they are...

then he asked if it was loud, i said it was (as it was fitted with a turbosmart supersonic) and just replaced it with a quieter after market one (Apexi).

they then asked me start the car and and give it a rev. of course it made a slight noise. he then said its to loud. then was asked to pop the bonnet. was told it has to be plumbed back into the exhaust system or dissabled. i then stated it is louder when dissabled as the compressed air needs to come out somewhere (through pod) causing flutter... then said as long as its disabled or plumbed into exhaust.

a defect notice was then written up (undue noise), and now have to get the bov plumbed into exhaust system and while they were at it got my exhaust system defected for being to loud. they was only going to allow a week to get the problem fixed. but the best i could get was 1 month max.

Must be put over the pits and pass inspection.

Apparently they are comming right down on modifications done to vehicles

yea the cops are cracking down here in tassie about bov dont no why if ya not allowed to use them on street cars why make em? that cops just being a asshole like all cops are. bov only help ya turbo get rid of compressed air. and if that start saying they are to loud why dont they listen to a harley then. most of the cops dont even now what a bov does or looks like the idiots just tell them to f**k of...

i have been told by a few people and tuning workshops that as of the first of this month. a few weeks ago. atmospheric BOV's are now illegal on street cars.

its no big deal to keep the original or buy an after-market plumb back.

its just the way things are now just like the price of fuel. the sooner you come to grips with reality the sooner you will get over it.

So you were thrashing the pisser out of it a few blocks before or something then?

Can't imagine the cops just randomly walked up while you were in the shop and went over the car...

Put a stock plumbback one back on, sell the shiny wanktastic one to some fool, live in peace. Only reason you could want an atmo venting one is attention or noise, in which case..HTFU.

Ahh well, my car never had a bov, never will have one. Its loud as f#ck with a 3" straight through exhaust and has a pretty loud flutter too, but I know how to drive when there might be eyes on me.

charming...

may I ask what car you drive?

haha, um no!, i hardly drive my 33 at all as i have a run around ute and its currently undergoing some work and need to drive it, plus i barely hit the speed limit as work is just up the road. but what i can say is that there were people doing stuipid things (being wet) and letting of there bov off, skiding etc. and i just happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, after working a 12 hour work day, its not something i needed...

i am not into the big pppssshhhtt! thing, its just how my car was bought, thats why i put a quieter one on it.

i suppose nothing is more quieter than a stock one or something that is full plumback.

Ummm wtf...

Ok I don't run a BOV at all as I don't care about compressor surge and dose sounds better I think.

My Dose is louder than most BOVs so I assume cops will be like you have a BOV as they have no idea what it is.

Also WTF plumed back to the exhaust... don't you mean plumed back before turbo?

yeah cops are f**kheads all need running over and they dont have a clue what they are on about. and they say that they are illegal thats full of shit cause turbo cars come with them standard from the factory and they still make a noise. you up the boost a bit in them and they get loud so the cop was just being a asshole like they always are. and he FLOODY ya better open ya eyes to the cops man they do it all the time just to be a smart ass but surppose they wouldnt look at you in ya car seems ya drive like an old fart.

It sounds like they are trying to crack down on external wastegates to me but have no idea what they are on about. It seems odd they target silly things like BOV's when an external gate is a lot louder than and BOV Ive ever heard...

In your case you would be best to inform then you will be recording the conversation(just use your phone or similar) and let them go for it because telling you to hook your BOV to your exhaust would be pretty easy to get out of considering that is not the correct way to hook up the BOV lol.......

The problem is that the police are told to crack down on particular aspects of modified cars however they seem to be getting trained up by a cowboy mechanic or something as these types of mistakes are quite often made.

I can see both sides of the story here.. I'm not a huge fan of the police due to a few instances similar to your where I had done nothing wrong and yet I got chased by 3 police cars. needless to say I got out of it on each occasion because I stuck to my case and knew they were basically trying to bully me into admitting I had done something wrong when I knew I hadnt. Its a disgrace but what can you do except tape the incident.

In saying that I was pulled up in my r31 the other night and the officers were champs, my attitude probably helped a bit. Like any industry there is the tossers amongst them and the good guys.

I would write a letter up with the true and correct facts of what they said(and a copy of the defect to prove it) and ask for it to be removed due to the request(to hook the BOV up to the exhaust hahahaha, hahahaha) being dangerous and mechanically wrong. And if you really want to be sly, you could make a point of ensuring the commissioner is aware his officers are under trained with modern motor vehicles and ask him to resolve the issue for the advantage of all involved.

Dan.

Not all turbo cars come from the factory with BOVs... Of course your late model skylines all do.

Nearly 4 years and counting and the police haven't tried to do me for anything related to the car itself... I can't just be slipping through the cracks mate, maybe the fact its legal and I don't drive around town like a dickhead makes the difference.

What, should I be driving like its powercruise when I go to the shops for some milk or commute to work?

Call me someone who drives like an old fart but I'm someone who doesn't attract the wrong attention.

And, ah...don't plumb your BOV into the exhaust!

ya dont have to drive around town like a dickhead if the cops dont like a car cause its nice they always try to pic it. most of the new cars do skylines do wrx do i can keep going on,if we didnt need one why would they put one on cars from the factory? yeah a external wastegate is way louder then any B.O.V i have got a hks 50mm wastegate on my car and that is loud as all f**k and the cops dont look at it but when my B.O.V does they do its weird the cops need to go to school and learn a bit about more about turbo cars. he FLOODY what kind of car do ya drive?

this might be unrelated but i have been p[ulled over 5 times in just over 2 weeks!

and i was driving like an old fart when they pulled me over..do they have something against black skylines??

i am saying this because my mate's yellow R33 was in front of me and they didn't even bother stopping him but they stopped me instead!

    • Thanks for that, I'll check it all out. I can always do the brakes last anyway if its a problem.  The 16's are super cool, if they do fit I'll cruise around with them for a bit.
    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.
    • OK, so again it has been a bit of a break but it was around researching what had been done since I didn't have access to Neil's records and not everything is obvious without pulling stuff apart. Happily the guy who assembled the engine had kept reasonable records, so we now know the final spec is: Bottom end: Standard block and crank Ross 86.5mm forgies, 9:1 compression Spool forged rods Standard main bolts Oil pump Spool billet gears in standard housing Aeroflow extended and baffled sump Head Freshly rebuilt standard head with new 80lb valve springs Mild porting/port match Head oil feed restrictor VCT disabled Tighe 805C reground cams (255 duration, 8.93 lift)  Adjustable cam gears on inlet/exhaust Standard head bolts, gasket not confirmed but assumed MLS External 555cc Nismo injectors Z32 AFM Bosch 023 Intank fuel pump Garret 2871 (factory housings and manifold) Hypertune FFP plenum with standard throttle   Time to book in a trip to Unigroup
    • I forgot about my shiny new plates!
    • Well, apparently they do fit, however this wont be a problem if not because the car will be stationary while i do the suspension work. I was just going to use the 16's to roll the old girl around if I needed to. I just need to get the E90 back on the road first. Yes! I'm a believer! 🙌 So, I contacted them because the site kinda sucks and I was really confused about what I'd need. They put together a package for me and because I was spraying all the seat surfaces and not doing spot fixes I decided not to send them a headrest to colour match, I just used their colour on file (and it was spot on).  I got some heavy duty cleaner, 1L of colour, a small bottle of dye hardener and a small bottle of the dye top coat. I also got a spray gun as I needed a larger nozzle than the gun I had and it was only $40 extra. From memory the total was ~$450 ish. Its not cheap but the result is awesome. They did add repair bits and pieces to the quote originally and the cost came down significantly when I said I didn't need any repair products. I did it over a weekend. The only issues I had were my own; I forgot to mix the hardener into the dye two coats but I had enough dye for 2 more coats with the hardener. I also just used up all the dye because why not and i rushed the last coat which gave me some runs. Thankfully the runs are under the headrests. The gun pattern wasn't great, very round and would have been better if it was a line. It made it a little tricky to get consistent coverage and I think having done the extra coats probably helped conceal any coverage issues. I contacted them again a few months later so I could get our X5 done (who the f**k thought white leather was a good idea for a family car?!) and they said they had some training to do in Sydney and I could get a reduced rate on the leather fix in the X5 if I let them demo their product on our car. So I agreed. When I took Bec in the E39 to pick it up, I showed them the job I'd done in my car and they were all (students included) really impressed. Note that they said the runs I created could be fixed easily at the time with a brush or an air compressor gun. So, now with the two cars done I can absolutely recommend Colourlock.  I'll take pics of both interiors and create a new thread.
