Which tyres are good for road + spirited driving and the ocassional drags without burning a hole in my pocket ?

Looking at 235s and 255s

one more thing, whats the largest width that would fit under GTST guards ? both front and rear ?

*thanks guys*

will really appreciate your help. Thanks again !

i had them, they were pretty good.

not i've got a set of the new Dunlop 3000A.

they shit all over the simex. The use them on XR6t/XR8's.

they are very decent.

and what rim size you got?

if you've only got say... 16x8 then it's useless going to 255's

OK I have had the following - all either 235/45/17 or 255/40/17

Goodyear Eagle something - can't remember, cheap, and shit, no grip, but very quiet

Falken GRB FK451 - excellent corner grip, not so great off the line, and still gripped well when worn and pretty quiet

Falken Azenis semi slick - excellent grip when warm, lasted about 6 months, very noisy, not mcuh grip when wet/cold

Falken GRB Tune II - cheap, and it showed - not much grip, in corners or straight line, noisy and lasted about 6000km - but for the money not too bad

Bridgestone S03 - So far so good, heaps of grip in the dry and wet, really quiet - done about 3000km so far and they still look pretty new. On the front now

Bridgestone RE55S - semi slick, heaps of grip - if I can get 10,000km out of them I'll be happy!!, not noisy, good in the wet so far (only 45okms so far!!) No wheelspin in 1st - well priced for what they are, and if you have a bit of grunt, these will get it to the road- so far they are great

And yes, my car gets a thrashing, and goes through its fair share of tyres!! GRB FK451's for value - S03 for pure performance

Hope that helps

dunlop fm-901's are apparently mad. They do well in comparisons such as motor tyre tests.

otherwise maybe try some michelins, my parents have always hed them on their car, and the grip is unbelieveable for the size... not sure which mdel but they wernt even very expensive. WE got P6000's as replacements (on my advide) and the difference in grip is huge, the michelins gripped a million times better...

My friend got 901s for his car in 17/255 17/235 like u, 250 for front and 350 for back from tempe tyres. They are a bit noisy, but excellent grip/handing in wet and dry.

siksII

you got me thinking has anyone done a comparison between top of the line michelin and pirellli tyres on grip

michelin cost over $500 per tyre

pirelli only $380 per tyre

on price for same features I went pirelli but no test drive.

So regarding the michelins can you find out which model?

Are you talking straight line grip or cornering grip?

fm-901's make nice white smoke when they spin and due to their lower grip you feel like your riding harder rubber.

Warning - P-Zeros are very very quiet! although a corner you wouldn't go over 70kph in a brand new volvo you can do at 120kph with PZero's in your skyline, JUST RIDE IT OUT! No drifting!

The time I did that my brakes got too hot and I couldn't slow down enough before the turn. takes about 1 second to drop each 10kph when your brakes are overheating. Freaky.

90 degree left turn - can take at 90kph - 40kph higher than an excel with slightly wider triple sidewall temperature A warmed up tyres. at 50kph.

    • Then today, I went to visit a man with an r33 hat Peter and Road and Race sorted the alignment. As it is being set up for general track/hillclimbs etc it has a heap of caster (7o), less camber than I am used to (1o front and 2o rear, as the caster looks after that in turns without the braking downsides), 3mm front toe out and 0 toe rear. Will see how that goes and track tyre wear to see if it does need more camber, but adjsustment is also limited with nismo arms and adjustable bushes at only 1 end. It does have a bent inner tie rod on the driver's side front but as it came up within spec I'll just leave that as is. So, that is getting close to my chapter of this story....could of tidy ups then a shakedown in early October before it finds a new home.
    • So, it went to Unigroup for a run in and tune on Friday, everything went (generally) well. In terms of fixes, the engine was good and there were no leaks. It needed plugs (I hadn't checked them because the coil pack cover was on a new engine and I couldn't imagine they weren't new.....but turns out the temporary plugs to just keep it sealed up were in there.....new plugs gapped to 0.8 and it was fine from there. Also, there was a little preload on the clutch slave which caused some slip. I haven't had the box off so I don't know what the clutch looks like; my guess it is brand new and the pedal had not been adjusted....backed that off a bit and it held fine. Last thing will have Dose crying....the idle especially when cold is a bit difficult between the cams, forward plenum, atmo blow off valve and an 80s air management system. It is fine when hot but a little uneven when cold, will see if I can sort or at least improve that one cold morning. Other than that, tuning went fine. It made 245 but was pulled back to 227 which 2 opportunities to improve in future. 1. The factory CAS is not great and was jumping around at high RPM, so Mark took 2 degrees out up top (that is why it stops making power and lost 20kw). Very safe this way and the extra power is available but will require a more modern ECU and better cam (or even better crank) sensor 2. The 2871 in factory housings is very big for a low mount, and the internal wastegate is too small, so it was creeping from mid range all the way to redline....the duty cycle on the boost controller is turned down a little for safety. That is much harder to fix, it would need a large external gate and that would require a whole bunch of other changes, so it will go as it is for now. It feels nice and healthy and safe, so should be good for about a billion laps like this.
    • what sort of caliper are they? If they are a slider and you gave everything a good clean, you might need to regrease the pins. My guess though is they will come good after some abuse as suggested above
