The car is stuttering/ popping sounding like a BEE-R limimter (toned down a bit) dumping fuel when building boost..

Pulled out the spark plugs and replaced them with NGK BKR-6E items, was told that these are pre-gapped at 0.8mm and should do the trick.. Car kept on missing, so sparkies weren't the problem.. Next I got another set of 32 GTR coil packs. Trialed them and still missing. I have a new coil loom due to arrive early next week, but somehow i don't really suspect the loom to be playing up. My current loom is worn and a couple of the clips are broken however the connection is there and it sits tight.

It's been missing on at least 3 different tanks of BP ultimate, the car drives fine until it gets to 4500rpm and over. I've looked at the intake set-up which seems fine. Tried turning down the boost :D

At this point Im somewhat stumpted.

Some people told me it could be injectors, but i don't see this to be the likely cause since it's dumping fuel and blowing black smoke so it's definately rich.

My next steps could be

-analyze the packs (1 of at a time)

-clean the afm's (question is with what and how?)

-Iridium plugs

-Ripping off front bar and analyzing the whole intake

-Split fire coils

I've got a whole bunch of parts sitting at home ie; turbos, fuel set-up, ebc, cam gears, injectors ... I was planning on getting it all done at home over a few weekends, but now im tempted to take it to my mechanics  if a spark issue is causing so much drama for me, I cbf putting up with all the twists and turns of my first 26 turbo swap adventure. ;)

Any suggestions?

It wont be the plugs - iridi are a waste of money anyway

AFM's - DIY section has a "how to" on cleaning them

Coils - could still be a stuffed coil or the loom. Wait till the loom arrives IMO, and (if you can) swap coils with someone who does not have issues

And go from there really

Thanks for the head up mate..

Will clean the afm's today with brake cleaner, makes a lot of sense to me now.. I haven't cleaned the K & N pods in some 12,oookm's  , so they must have passed through a lot of grime to the meters..

Will update my findings later today..

Ok...

Just got back home after spending a good 10 hours on my car (and mates 32; putting turbo on the rb20)..

The afm's were rather dirty and I gave them a real good clean, with the pods I gave them a treatment to. While waiting for them to dry I loosened the silicone hoses in the engine bay pulled them off and put them back on..

Fitted it all back up and it was still missing, Anything more then 50% injector duty (stock injectors) and it would start missing. Got back home and checked the coilpacks one by one while engine was running.. They turned out fine. I then borrowed my friends coil distributor and fitted it to my car, it didn't yield any results.

Got some more suggestions from mates, was going to run a test on my FPR but decided not too due to in-sufficient tools..

On the way home I noticed the car would start missing (or should i call it stuttering now) as soon as the centre console boost gauge would start registering positive boost.

So atm I am 80% sure it is a boost leak..

Tomorrow Il rip off as much plumbing as accesibly possible and perhaps get new clamps, then during the week order some new silicone hoses..

Sounds like a boost leak right?

No I wouldn't say i heard any odd noises from the engine.. Apart from the popping which is giving away the boost leak idea.

It could be dirty injectors, but im not assed to pull them out and get them tested to knock them of the trouble shooting list. If i can't figure it out tomorrow il just drop it off to my mechanic and get him to band it and give me the true symptom.

Cheers Tomek

will update ...

O2 sensor?

havn't had a look at it yet..

On my way to get some new hoses, clamps and sand paper, removed the old one's. 1 of the hoses is pretty bad and 3 of the clamps are rooted ..

Pretty confident now :)

ecu.........

i had the same problem, trying to come onto boost, would missfire, shake, throw black smoke, and wouldnt come onto boost....

make sure the plug on the ecu is not bent into the actual computer, like the 10mm bolt that bolts it in, make sure the sides are equally pressed in aswell.....

doesn't sound like a boost leak,

have you tried checking each cylinder?

remove each coil plug see amount of difference?

comp tests are always handy

had a mini rip in one of the joiners which I have patched up (about to order new ones)

no I havn't done a comp test yet.

Sunday I patched up the boost leak.

Car was still missing but now building boost and staining the driveway on idle (incredibly rich)

Talked to a mate and explaine the systems, and he found by freak of nature the likely cause.. Now for the people who are interested.. here is the read:

http://paulr33.skylinesaustralia.com/docs/...erfc-faq.htm#63

So after quite a long dilemma of finding the suitable earthing wire i finally put an extra earth on it... Car is still missing slightly but it is pulling through the Rev range some what cleanly.

Today I went to take my mech for a spin, after a quick 2nd gear blat, he told me to reduce the gap on sparkies..

So tomorrow I will be gapping down to 0.6mm () and tidying up the coils, which should result in a fix..

should be no need for .6mm plug gap with your current setup.. if thats still the case your coil packs are on there way out the door.. .8mm gap shouldnt have any problems with your setup

and it wasnt by freak of nature.. it was by you not mentioning everything done to the car just like the first post in this thread :wub:

well plan is to modify the packs .. if this doesn't fix it.. Il re-gap..

Why can't you just agree... it was unlikely you would of gave me the info if the wording wasn't spot on

i believe it was "hang on.. wat bloody computer you running" "pfc" "ahh ffs you didnt tell me that"

we could get onto the subject of chicken wire?

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
