hi

the car is a R33gtst s1. i hear the noise when i drive slowly (straight and around corners), if im slowing down, and have notived it more if im turning left on a hill (at an intersection). i dont think its the suspension as the car has new coilovers and the sound is still there. the previouse owner said the noise was the Hduty clutch going on and off. i have jacket the car up, put it in nuteral with the handbrake off and rotated the back wheels and didnt notice much play (both wheels moved together). i havent done the diff oil yet so ill be doing that soon. the nuts on the wheels are tight so its not that (read in a diffrent thread that loose nuts cause noise). anyone have anything else i can try before i take it to a work shop and them say " *cha ching* yeah mate u have to buy all this un-nessasary crap and that may not fix the problem"

thanks in advance,

Aif

does the car have an lightweight flywheel aswell?

my 33 has a twin plate clutch and lightweight flywheel, accelerating under 2000rpm the car makes a rattling noise which sounds like its comming from the gearbox, the previous owner has said that its just the flywheel being to light causing the gears to rattle or something, seems consistent with other skyline owners with aftermarket clutch and flywheel, they all say the same thing, if this is what it is its nothing to worry about

i may have read wrong but you havent even described what kind of noise and where you think its coming from. abit more precise and im sure you'll get a helpfull answer.

i have a lightened flywheel and it makes a "gara gara" low rattle noise at low revs. do yo have a solid short shifter? is it grinding or clunking noise? coming from the front, gbox, or back? could be any thing or something silly as something in your glove box...lol

the noise sounds like a clunky rattle *CLUNK CLunk clunk* from the back left of the car, it sounded like a shagged shockie but i got coilovers and the noise is still there. and i get it if im accelerating and then let go of the throttle *clunk*

i dont know if the clutch is a hduty clutch with a lightened fly wheel (is there an easy way to check other then opening the gearbox?), because it felt like the guy i bought the car from was telling me crap to cover what this noise might be.

i have a stock shifter. i have emptied the car inc. the partial tray, boot linings and spar tyre and the noise is still coming from the back.

i hope this helps you guys help me :/

Have you checked the drive shafts / half shafts going to the wheels?

I get a clunk on/off acceleration and when changing gears and there is a little bit of slack somewhere near the CV joints there.

    • I can get more photos of it here soon and I plan to make a thread detailing the process. I received the car this way and it sorely needs refinishing. That is probably the most appealing photo of it. Up close it is fading, cracked, and needs to be re-glued. Depending on their condition I'm on the fence between refinishing or making a new set.  Another angle hiding the pimples and razor pumps
    • According to this thread the RS4V with build plate RC40 comes with the R200 diff @ 4.083 ratio as well (mine has said RC40 denotation). We may need to check if the axle stubs are the same pattern as well. The auto subframes have longer axles. However I think yours being a later Series 2 as well, we should have the same bolt pattern for the diff stubs. Unless your upgraded rear also has upgraded axles. Either way, I would not be opposed to pulling the covers to check so I can inspect that  fancy rear core  Also I don't have HICAS. I don't believe that should change things but I hope the people here with heaps more experience than me can correct me if I'm wrong   Let me know if you want to attempt to make this work and I can get some pictures of mine from under the car.
    • It's not that straightforward. For example I have had this code because my ignitor/power transistor wires were unplugged. It knows something is wrong but has no idea what it means. If you want to actually diagnose this I recommend following the service manual flowchart for code 21. Ohm out the harness, coilpacks, inspect the ECU, etc. And again, it's entirely possible for there to be no problem at all but if you're running a different coilpack it'll trigger the code because it doesn't like what it sees.
    • If it (the code) wasn't still current, it should have gone away by itself by now. No, nothing it 10/10. But it is quite likely. Everything else to do with the ignition could still be responsible (which is wires and connectors). The car is an old piece of shit now, so all the wires and connectors are also old pieces of shit.
