Hey guys

On the market for a ECU and I dont have much experience with ECU's

so thought I'd post up on SAU for assistance

budget is around 1500

I lost a bid on a Power Fc with hand controller

cause it went over my max bid of 1100 (used condition)

I wanted a Motec as I've been told they are the best and also universal but they are very expensive.

Got my eye on the Greddy E-manage Ultimate at the moment which ive seen around the $800 mark.

How do they compare to the rest of the ECU market and why are they more reasonably priced.

Have they got less features??

I remember reading somewhere on this forum where some ranked ecu's as such

Motec

Haltech

Apexi Power Fc

and whatever others in between and below

hope someone can shed some light on the topic

Go get your standard ecu remapped. I cant see any downside to it except if you needed some higher end functions like launch control, anti lag and flat shift.

I have an r33 s2 with a dr drift remap and it runs, idles, cold starts perfectly!

are you talking about there being no downside to EMU? or remapping stock ecu?

emu is good for mild mods, but once you start using bigger injectors and pushing more air through there are problems.

Apparently doesn't like injectors that are more than 50% bigger than standard, and I don't think it supports larger AFMs (was told it converts it back to the stock AFM resolution)

Really depends on what you're intending on doing to the car and how it'll be driven.. Motec and Haltec units may have features you'd never use and would probably be a waste of money. New ViPEC ecu may be an option, might be out of your price range though.

that is my car with the mods list

Gavin Wood is my chosen Tuner.

He recommended a Apexi Power FC for $1450

which he can source brand new.

and $720 for install + tune

heard about Vipec but didnt find a price or tuner close to me that could tune it

Ive read some of your threads and you seem to be knowledgeable with the ecu's

So from what you can see on the dyno reading i posted and the mod list on my car.

what do you propose I invest in?

I think i will be going down the modifying direction with my GTS-T to make it a fun street car.

but thats about it.

Well on the Gold Coast Gavin Wood is a very reputable tuner and has be known for working GTRs

one particular car is the TOP RPM 33GTR

anyway he said it may take few hours o tune so he maybe said 700 to be safe.

Spend

$1000 for r33 ecu with daughter board

$200 for a tune

Save the remaining $1000 you would have spent and buy some injectors and z32 AFM

Instal and drive!!!

i do heaps of remaps and im sorry to say but it is just to dear for what you get. PFC or Vipec/LINK all day over a R33 remap.

vipec plugin ecu 1650.00 23 psi map sensor...far better choice now than a power fc fpr rb25s....

easy to tune and a full out ecu controls , upgradedable etc... lcd dash avail soon for about 900.00

600 to tune.....

rb25 power fc s are great if you can get them 1000.00 but 1500 is too much...

we charge 4 to 600 for a power fc fitted and tuned and have done 100s of them...

Down side - if you upgrading something then you gotta spend another 400 for a new chip/tune.

Yeah thats why i got the daughter board put in as i still have injectors and z32 to go and probably a front mount later on.

Drives, idles and performs great now and ecconomy as a lot better than b4.

Can some1 let me know what the advantage of a power fc over a remap (from a tuners point of view) besides the hand controller (honest question)

Well from another point of view (the average punter) the main thing would be choice of tuners, workshops and so on above all else... the fact retuning doesnt cost a bomb either also adds to things if you say change I/C, mild turbo, cams and so on where a remap suddenly becomes unviable in my book once you've had to retune it more than once.

The remaps that are 'sent in the mail' i have no faith in, as every car is different.

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
    • The maxpeedingrods turbo is cheap and bolts on to stock parts. I think you just need a bigger silicone coupler for the intake. Its a cheap china turbo, but it's been running on mine for almost 3 years at 16-19 psi.
    • What do they look like right after you've tried to start it with everything connected? Also post photos of what they actually look like.
    • Also wanted to say, my new spark plugs are blackened looks like it's very rich. I have splitfire coilpacks but stock coilpack loom and ignitor. I tried directly grounding the ignitor ground to body as well.
