Go to Pattaya if you want to party. Heaps of good restaurants, resorts, shopping malls and bars and clubs. It's on the coast as well so lots of water activities for you to do.

Easily the best place in Thailand

I would go to bangkok to experience it...night markets/shopping/food/usual temples/tourist stuff and that.

then koh samet where the locals go to avoid the usual tourist islands not a bad place...you'll have to pay an entry tax though

take a 12 hour train ride south to surat thani (I think - that's what the stations called)....some memories there :)

then please check out krabi and railay beach, aonang...

visit koh tao for diving and samui as others have said and ang thong (emerald lake)

there were a few more places I visited but here's a start.

if you want more details let me know.

i stayed at PHI PHI island village resort....FUNKIN AMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZING!!! check out there site!

"deveena" in patong is awesome too! and super cheap!

Phi Phi island is really good deinfently go for 1 night at least. maybe on a 2 day trip or something becasue we just went on a day trip for like 3 or 4 hours....

(***stay away from the monkeys on monkey beach**** .....one bite me and i needed to get daily rabbis shots at phuket hospital, lol)

Yeh anyway phuket is good for shopping (CHEAP) and beach and nightlife. One thing i couldnt get over is the smell....i tried to but couldnt get over it...

Stayed in Gracelands resort which is sort of between the mountains and the main street (bungalow road, i think???) only about 700m down the road which meant it was much more quiet during the day and still a short walk at night...

DO NOT RENT Jetskis, Scooter, Boats etc UNLESS you make sure you act responsibly. The street are full of thai guys on bikes and they weave in and out so you have to take lots of care. If there are any scratches they will make you pay for A NEW ONE. Heard plenty of stories, then ,of course, it happens to some people we met at the resort. The teenage girl is drivng her rented scooter and hit a thai guy....an arrest and $4000 later she tells me the story.....this happened on thier last day too, Father wasnt happy....

Bankok is good for experince. the tuk tuk drivers are amazing how they just cut in front of stuff at like 60km without looking. so its worth it..

lucky you didnt plan to go while the red shirt guys were protesting. this massive shopping centre i was in was burnt to the ground a month later. we just got out before the riots started

Phuket was a shithole IMO. Been to Thailand 3 times, various places. Last holiday 2 week in Phuket and it didn't impress me one bit TBH.

2 weeks in phuket is way too long IMO. did thailand last year and spent a week in phuket and that was boring unless you plan on shopping heaps) and a week in koh so moi and koh so moi was WAYYYYYYY better. more relaxing and random parties.

:P wanna go back. beach party on tonight :P

I was there in January and stayed at Holiday Inn in Patong and it was fantastic but being a pool villa definitely helped. Good location and best buffet breakfast ever!!!

I have to agree with above in terms of shopping, MBK is AWESOME almost spent 2 days shopping there with my wife. The markets also were really good and can buy good T shirts and shorts for $4-5, sunglasses $3 and same items in Patong 2-3 times that.

I wouldn't bother buying many DVD's as most of the newer movies are just TS (camera) versions.

I've been to Bangkok twice now and phuket and Koh Samui once

Personally I LOVED Bangkok... great big city and amazing shopping! Spent 1/2 a day in MBK but thing is the shops and stock r repetitive after a while and sort of gets boring! in terms of night markets the more popular (or should I say "infamous") one if Pat Pong night market... its smack bang in the middle of a redlight district... was funny as in the 60m walk from one side to the other I got offers by 36 people for ping pong shows.... (declined them all) but Suan Lum night bazzar is off the hook! Picked up some polos (Apexi, blitz etc) for around AUD15 each... and good food there too!

Phuket I spent a week in and thought it was wayy too long! Not much to do there apart from party, beach and a few sights.... if all you want to do is party and chill on the beach then its perfect...

Koh Samui I only stayed for 2 days in Bo Phut beach area (only wanted to go there to fly Bangkok airways and check out the island airport).... quiet and peaceful and I did appreciate it after the crazyness of Phuket...

In terms of hotels... seriously they r cheap as hell and as some have already mentioned... a 3 star in Thailand is equivalent to a 4.5 or 5 star here!... if ur after specifics msg me and I can look up the ones I Stayed in.... i didn;t spend more than 250 for 5 nights!

    • Nah, they'll do it without a receipt, tell em roughly when it was, that it was cash, youll likely only get store credit, but that gets you some dollars towards the newer better shovel, or other item you need/want later.   Still take it back and have a crack at returning it.
    • Nah. Was just wondering if you were having a small stroke or if there was some slur/gaf/inside joke that I wasn't aware of.
    • That was a fark up, it's Salamanca Place I was thinking of. And now I'm curious as to what potential slur/gaf I have caused with Salamander Road, ha ha!
    • Actually everyone on the roads was really well behaved. The only person that did any minor tailgating was a local hoon in a Turbo Focus. Unfortunately we weren't going the same way so there was no grand initial D touge battle. Lots of people pulled over and let me through. The amount of "Hey man nice car, omg skyline, nice 34 man woo" was suprising. Like really suprising. Like almost annoying. My partner was obviously surprised, she'd never seen anyone in the real world point out the car/like the car/want to chat about the car before, so to have like 3 people per day mention it was notable, I could finally say SEE? SOMEONE THINKS THEY'RE COOL. Everyone was also pretty suprised about the weather. Every day was dry and about ~13-14C. Mount Wellington had a sign that said they close the gates at 9pm and I was heading up there at about ~7:30. It was VERY apparent that conditions were getting significantly worse by the minute on the way up and down. The road on the mountain was terrible though, it's no driving road. I have various suspension related questions now. Luckily it was only about 20 minutes from where we were staying to the top of the mountain as said Google maps. We only had the 2 nights in Hobart. We went to the Farm Gate Market though which was really good - And went down to the Hastings Thermal springs/caves down there during the day. I'd definitely be up for going back again, so luckily there's a few more sights yet to see. Didn't get to do the west coast/queenstown/cradle mountain so this was supposed to be a 'scouting' trip anyway of sorts if I were to one day do/take part in/organize a more car-focused trip. As for the boat, it wasn't bad. Well it was bad, but not in the way you're thinking. We did the night trip which leaves at 6:45 (though you have to be there ~2 hours earlier) and arrives the next morning at about 6am. There is nothing to do on the ship. If you plan accordingly and bring a book/tablet/show to watch/charger you can just chill out, take some Travacalm and just sleep through it. The food there is an extremely basic buffet that costs $32 a plate, or $14 for a $3 pizza. The way back we had a travel kettle and a few different types of cup noodles and made our own tea/coffee in the room. This was a far superior way to do it. At the very least book one of the rooms with beds. I guess as we were in the off season we didn't have room mates. You get an option for rooms with 4 beds (2x bunks) or a room with just the two bottom beds. There's also some option for a deluxe queen bed but it's much pricer. We've been on sleeper trains in Asia before so we figured this is similar (and it was)
