hi guys just thought i'd share my project with you. i'm modifying my friend’s r33 gtst as his now keen for some more juice :D

mods:

kkr480 turbo (internal gate)

kkr dump/trust front pipe

xforce high flow cat

jjr exhaust (basically straight thru with just a canon, very loud!)

splitfire coil packs

hybrid fmic

pfc

z32 afm (still to buy)

040 fuel pump

s15 480cc injectors

the project is near complete, all the work has been done myself. the above mods have been installed apart from z32 afm witch im yet to buy.

need to fix an exhaust leak between the turbo and dump, the bloody v-band clamps are a pain!

should be completing the rest of the car in a few weeks, its taken a lot of weekends and skin of my hands! it will be tuned by adam at jem, i'm looking for a safe 240rwkw+ on 14psi

any questions and suggestions are welcome, can’t wait to post up the results. i'll try and get some pics up soon.

:)

sounds good but just from experience I dont think you will get 240rwkw out of 14psi though...

well we will see what happens, maybe between 14-16psi depends how the motor reacts to it.

Aren't 33 injectors a similar size to the s15 ones?

r33 injectros are 370cc, s15 are 480cc

l0WRB Posted Today, 01:47 PM

you mite see 240rwkw on a happy dyno

but your gonna need 18psi to see 240rwkw outta kkr480

they just dont have what it takes 2 make decent power.

turbo seems very responsive, full boost by 4000-4500rpm without a proper dyno tune and comes one very hard. i've read some of your post on the forum and it seems so strange to me that yours is just so lagy. kkr have released a new version with fixed boost spike issues and it seems to work like a treat.

i got some photos on my phone that i'll upload and post later today.

:D

ur mods seem really similar to mine, except for 2 main things.. I have a hypergear tr43 and higher compression cuz its a non turbo engine....

I even have an exhaust leak between the back of the turbo and dump! I agree with those blasted v clamps!

im getting a new dump pipe with a flex in the middle... that should work a treat...maybe something you should consider doing to your dump?

atm, with a quick tune by dr. drift and the exhaust leak I am on 230rwkw...at 14psi... just to give you some measurement

I want to fix the leak and then get a few good hours of tuning and then hopefully if she isnt knocking put the boost up a few more psi and get 250ish

interested to know how you go....

Adam

ok here are some pics, please note that it’s nowhere near complete. this setup was only for testing.

things that still need doing:

exhaust leak

new intake pipe

buy/install z32 afm

modify oil catch can to fit

replace clamps

re-connect ebc

ect...

will be fixing and exhaust leak this weekend and fabricating a new intake pipe.

will keep everyone updated on the progress.

:D

well ive just finished putting an external 50mm wastegate welded straight off the exhaust housing (boost problem fixed)

turbo makes around 250rwkw at 18psi at the moment though

there decent turbos ive done 30,000kms on it at 18psi daily no shaft play at all... still feels brand new.

i see 18psi by about 4500rpm which is ok i guess 4 bush bearing turbo.

hey adam,

yeah them vband style stuff is rubbish! i don’t think it’s a matter of putting in the flex to reduce the weight being put onto the clamp, it’s the quality of the clamp. i also found that the surface of the dump pipe was not even so i will be machining it and locating a stronger and tighter clamp but anyway i hope that solves the issue. i'll keep you updated :D

how did you find your 740cc injectors? did it cause a ruff idle?

:)

well that’s about right then :)

how bad was your boost creep? otomoto says they have eliminated the boost creep with the new series? i was originally going to go external but they talked me out of it, i hope i don’t run into this issue on the dyno!

my boost creep was bad, i couldnt run anything under 1.4bar and it sometimes spiked to 1.6bar but my boost cut is set at 21psi so yeah, well my kkr480 was all ported out etc before they sent it, still creep, this was couple yrs ago though, maybe they have fixed it! my mechanic who done the external gate off the housing rkns the internal wastegate hole was about as big as a 5cent piece, which explains why it couldnt get the exhaust gases out quick enough lol

lol.. sorry let me reexplain wot I meant... I still don't think the v clamps are great... but yeh.... wots worse is that I had a 3inch xforce dump with the flange for a standard turbo... the guys I asked to make it nice, neat and flat when cutting the dump's flange and putting on the circular lip for the v clamp and back of the turbo did an appalling job! very ugly welding but whats worse is that it was not flat.. so thats why I am wanting a new dump with the correct flat face for the back of the turbo with a flex in the middle so it should sit nice and flush :)

PLEASE tell me if you can find a stronger clamp anywhere, obviously the more clamping power the better ;)

my injectors are not bad at all.... a tiny tiny bit worse...but its only had about hr-hr half max of tuning time... Sam's pretty good doing a quick safe tune... but we need to fix the leak before the final tune and possibly more boost... wot did help the idle being smoother was cleaning out the aac valve...lots of carbon mixed with a quick tune doesn't help at 800rpm :) the only reason I got them and not some sensibly sized s15 injectors or a slight aftermarket upgrade was because I got them for near the same price you probably paid for the s15's... right place right time I guess...always watching the for sale stuff on here!

keep up the good work!

keep us updated on this 217/r33 keen to see results and hear off any issues

will do mate, so far so good.

kkr480 went straight in onto stock manifold, had to twist the housing of the turbo to line them up for oil/water lines and intercool pipe. she still had about 3-5mm between the compressor and the manifold. i was lucky to pick up a oil/water cooler version. oil lines bolt straight up, i had to make up my own water lines by cutting the stock steal ones. only problem was the stock turbo uses a bigger bolt on the water line that connects to the turbo, so what i did was source out 2x stock bottom water lines of x2 wrecked r33's because the side that bolts into the bottom if the engine is the same size bolt into the turbo. so what i did was cut them in half using as much of the metal line as possible and connecting them up with a high temperature house.

s15 injectors are a straight swap if you can bloody get the stock ones out of the fuel rail! that was a real pain. good luck with the bolts on the stock plenum, hard to get to if you have big hands. take of the throttle body and the aac valve and you should be sweet.

bosh 040 is not that hard, took me about an hour. the car had a full tank of fuel... that was fun :O (there are heaps of D.I.Y on the forums)

the rest of the mods are basically straight bolt on's.

will be booking the car in this week to make up a new intake pipe for the turbo, will post up some pics when she's in :P

:D

keep up the good work!

ahh yes we all know them half dodgy dump pipe jobs. if they can’t weld they probably don’t know what they are doing, that’s my view on it anyway.

well i've had a look around for some v-band clamps and on average they go between $40-$80 and the quality still looks really poor.

if i find anything i'll defiantly let you know

i guess after some good dyno time they will run smooth enough to not really notice them. i also cleaned the aac valve when i changed the injectors, i've fixed many skylines with this issue. what do people expect after about 15 years of wear and tear!

let me know how you go with the new dump pipe, and be sure to post up that new dyno sheet, good luck, nice work :woot:

:)

lol! good to hear it's fixed. well i guess they have fixed this issue with the new series, i'm also very happy that its water cooled now. i inspected the hole turbo and looked at the wastegate carefully, seems it's a decent size hole.

during road testing the boost seemed very steady, 12-14psi without any ebc just straight line of the turbo into the wastegate. (using electronic gauge for near accurate reading)

we will be doing the tune using the stock wastegate, see how it goes fingers crossed it will be fine :)

quick update;

im taking the car to sureflow exhaust in ingleburn friday morning to make up a new intake pipe for the turbo.

spoke with grant at otomoto and his willing to replace the dump pipe and clamp because i think the dump pipe might be warped from the welding.

the project is near complete, just waiting for a z32 afm. then it’s time to book her in for a tune :)

:(

    • That's kind of what I was getting at saying you'd be here soon regarding length etc being able to add additional restriction.  My assumption (possible donkeys of you and mption) is that the length of hose to an oil cooler, and back, isn't going to be that huge of a loss. Typically you're talking about 1.5m of total length. And so far everyone in our world hasn't had issues with oil not being able to get to a cooler and back, it's more been, how the heck do we get the oil out of the head and back down to the bottom? I'd nearly hazard a guess the biggest issue people have with oil cooling and oil supply, is being able to get the heat out at the cooler itself (not enough air flow, too small of a cooler etc) Also, when people mount them wrong and make really awesome air traps so they've dramatically diminished the cooling capacity.
    • I will rebutt this and the preceding point from Dose....but without doing any calcs to demonstrate anything and without knowing that I am right or wrong. But... The flow capacity of a fluid transfer system is not limited by the smallest orifice or section of conduit in that system, unless it is drastically smaller than the rest of the system. OK, I use the word drastically perhaps with too much emphasis, but let's drill down on what I really mean. The flow capacity of the system is the result of the sum of the restrictions of the entire system. So, to make an extreme example, if you have a network with 3" pipe everywhere (and let's say a total length of only a few metres) and that 12mm ID restriction of the oil filter connection being the obvious restriction, then for any given amount of pressure available, the vast majority of all the pressure drop in the system is going to occur in the 12mm restriction. But.... increase the length of the 3" pipeline to, say 1000m, and suddenly the pipe pressure loss will likely add up to either be in the same order of magnitude, possibly even exceeding that of the 12mm restriction. Now the 12mm restriction starts to matter less. Translate this to the actual engine, actual oil cooler hose sizing, etc etc, and perhaps: The pressure loss caused by flowing through the narrow section (being the 12mm oil filter port, and perhaps any internal engine oil flow pathways associated with it) is a certain number. The pressure loss through, say, -12 hoses out to the cooler and back is negligible, but The pressure loss through -10 hoses out to the cooler, at the exact same length as the above, starts to become a decent fraction of the loss through the 12mm stuff at the filter port. Maybe even it starts to exceed it. I could actually do these calcs if I knew 1) how much oil was actually flowing in the line, 2) gave enough of a f**k to do things that I hate doing for work, voluntarily for a hypothetical discussion. Anyway - I reiterate. It's not the narrowest port that necessarily determines how much it can all flow. It is the sum. A long enough length of seemingly fat enough pipe can still cause more loss than a semmingly dominant small bore restriction.
    • To pick up what Dose is putting down. Not a lot of point running a huge hose if the motor is still restricted to the smaller size... It's only capable of flowing so much at that point...   *Waits for GTSBoy to come in and bring in the technicalities of length of pipe, and additional restriction from wall friction etc etc*
    • Hooley Dooley these things have some history! If i sell them they will need a certificate of providence to prove they have been in the hands of verified RB20 royalty! They have been stored in a plastic tub, away from sunlight and moisture. They are in mint condition. And they will stay that way, as i have sprung the money for a set of shockworks coilovers. I'm just working on getting them in at the moment, after rebushing the rear of the car, and while the subframe was out i welded in the GKtech reinforcement bracing as well.  They will get a workout at Ararat King of The Hill in November. I ran 48s on the short course there a few months ago, and i am hoping with new bushes and shocks in the rear i can launch a bit harder. There was a fair bit of axle tramp when i tried too hard off the line. a few of the corners had dips mid way which also made the car feel a bit unsettled, hopefully this will help there too.
